Uptake and Translocation of Foliar-Applied L-proline in Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium L.)

Foliar application of nitrogen (N) may supplement soil-applied N in sweet cherry orchards. The proteinogenic amino acid L-proline is a potential source of organic N. However, little is understood about its uptake and effects on fruit quality. In this study, 15N-labelled L-proline was spray-applied to branches of the cultivar ‘Lapins’ either pre- or post-harvest. Leaves, fruit, and whole branches were sampled to investigate the uptake and allocation of foliar-applied N. Both treatments resulted in elevated 15N levels in leaves, with N derived from proline (%NDP) comprising 0.22% and 0.45% after pre- and post-harvest applications, respectively. The fruit was a sink for pre-harvest L-proline, with the highest %NDP in the pedicel (0.21%), followed by the skin (0.17%) and flesh (0.12%). Quality outcomes of smaller, darker fruit with lower stem retention indicate advanced maturity following L-proline application. Both pre- and post-harvest treatments resulted in the recovery of 15N in branches at late dormancy, with %NDP in bark (0.12%), buds (0.15%), and wood (0.02%) of the post-harvest treatment twice as high compared with those from the pre-harvest treatment. This study demonstrates proof of concept of the uptake of L-proline into the leaves of sweet cherry plants and translocation into the fruit and storage organs of the branch. Full article

Although voxel models have been applied to address diverse problems in computer-aided design processes, their role in multi-domain data integration in digital architecture and planning has not been extensively studied. The primary objective of this study is to map the current state of the art and to identify open questions concerning data structuring, integration, and modeling and design of multi-scale objects and systems in architecture. Focus is placed on types of voxel models that are linked with computer-aided design models. This study utilizes a semi-systematic literature review methodology that combines scoping and narrative methodology to examine different types and uses of voxel models. This is done across a range of disciplines, including architecture, spatial planning, computer vision, geomatics, geosciences, manufacturing, and mechanical and civil engineering. Voxel-model applications can be found in studies addressing generative design, geomatics, material science and computational morphogenesis. A targeted convergence of these approaches can lead to integrative, holistic, data-driven design approaches. We present (1) a summary and systematization of the research results reported in the literature in a novel manner, (2) the identification of research gaps concerning voxel-based data structures for multi-domain and trans-scalar data integration in architectural design and urban planning, and (3) any further research questions. Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is associated with a high risk of sarcopenia. Both intra-articular injections (IAIs) and physical therapy (PT) exert benefits in KOA. This network meta-analysis (NMA) study aimed to identify comparative efficacy among the combined treatments (IAI+PT) in patients with KOA. Seven electronic databases were systematically searched from inception until January 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reporting the effects of IAI+PT vs. IAI or PT alone in patients with KOA. All RCTs which had treatment arms of IAI agents (autologous conditioned serum, botulinum neurotoxin type A, corticosteroids, dextrose prolotherapy (DxTP), hyaluronic acid, mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), ozone, platelet-rich plasma, plasma rich in growth factor, and stromal vascular fraction of adipose tissue) in combination with PT (exercise therapy, physical agent modalities (electrotherapy, shockwave therapy, thermal therapy), and physical activity training) were included in this NMA. A control arm receiving placebo IAI or usual care, without any other IAI or PT, was used as the reference group. The selected RCTs were analyzed through a frequentist method of NMA. The main outcomes included pain, global function (GF), and walking capability (WC). Meta-regression analyses were performed to explore potential moderators of the treatment efficacy. We included 80 RCTs (6934 patients) for analyses. Among the ten identified IAI+PT regimens, DxTP plus PT was the most optimal treatment for pain reduction (standard mean difference (SMD) = −2.54) and global function restoration (SMD = 2.28), whereas MSC plus PT was the most effective for enhancing WC recovery (SMD = 2.54). More severe KOA was associated with greater changes in pain (β = −2.52) and WC (β = 2.16) scores. Combined IAI+PT treatments afford more benefits than do their corresponding monotherapies in patients with KOA; however, treatment efficacy is moderated by disease severity. Full article

At present, there is a growing focus on the landscape and environment of ocean cities, with an increasing demand for improved ecological sustainability and aesthetic appeal. With the emergence of computer vision design technologies such as 3D and VR, people have overcome the limitations of traditional paper-based design materials. Through the use of computer software, various forms of expression, such as drawings and animations, can be produced, thereby meeting the diverse demands for showcasing plant landscapes. The purpose of this paper is to study the design of marine urban (MU) botanical landscapes based on computer vision technology (CVT) and multimodal interaction design (MID) theory, so that the design of MU botanical landscape can meet people’s psychological behavior and visual needs, and at the same time enable people to participate in and experience the landscape, so as to better meet people’s needs for viewing, leisure, and entertainment. At the same time, it is hoped that the research of this paper will play a role in promoting the innovation and development of the concept of MU landscape design (LD) in the future, specifically from two levels of theoretical and practical significance. First, at the level of theoretical research: Based on the theory of MID, this paper explores the application of communication and interaction among humans and between humans and the landscape in the design of MU planting, and tries to explore and summarize the content and methods of interactive LD in marine cities with a theoretical basis and research value. The goal is to both enhance the theoretical level of interactive LD, and also provide new reference for future marine city (MC) LD. Second, at the level of practical application: In the field of LD, the new concept of computer vision is introduced to fully understand the visual needs of people and increase the practicality and pleasantness of the MU landscape, hoping to attract more people to come to play and rest. Through the attraction of MU landscapes to tourists, the design and construction of the landscape no longer focus on its appearance, but rather on the participation and experience of people. Autonomous unmanned systems have become an attractive vehicle for a myriad of military and civilian applications. This can be partly attributed to their ability to bring payloads for utility, sensing, and other uses for various applications autonomously. However, a key challenge in realizing autonomous unmanned systems is the ability to perform complex group missions, which require coordination and collaboration among multiple platforms. This paper presents a cooperative navigating task approach that enables multiple unmanned surface vehicles (multi-USV) to autonomously capture a maneuvering target while avoiding both static and dynamic obstacles. The approach adopts a hybrid multi-agent deep reinforcement learning framework that leverages heuristic mechanisms to guide the group mission learning of the vehicles. Specifically, the proposed framework consists of two stages. In the first stage, navigation subgoal sets are generated based on expert knowledge, and a goal selection heuristic model based on the immune network model is used to select navigation targets during training. Next, the selected goals’ executions are learned using actor-critic proximal policy optimization. The simulation results with multi-USV target capture show that the proposed approach is capable of abstracting and guiding the unmanned vehicle group coordination learning and achieving a generally optimized mission execution. This study, focused on collaborative learning approaches, aims to contribute to our understanding of whether and how teachers propose these kinds of activities in their daily practice. Particularly, this study aims to explore teachers’ behaviour when designing such activities for their learners with respect to different learning settings (i.e., face-to-face and/or blended settings vs. fully online settings). With reference to fully online settings, the Emergency Remote Teaching that took place during the COVID-19 outbreak is used as a reference case. The results of a self-reported survey of Italian teachers (N = 268) are presented. Our conclusions indicate that Italian teachers do propose collaborative learning activities to some extent in face-to-face and/or blended settings as well as in fully online settings, with statistically significant differences both in reference to the approaches adopted and to the (technological) tools used. Nonetheless, the data also indicate that teachers’ design decisions are not always in line with recommendations widely proposed by the collaborative learning research community. Full article

Drying has been widely studied as a necessary process in biomass utilization. The steam diffusion law plays an important role in drying kinetics. The drying kinetics of a single biomass particle using Fick’s second law of diffusion was studied in this paper. A parabolic relationship appeared between the critical moisture content and temperature. The critical moisture content decreased with the increase in drying temperature and the initial moisture content. The drying temperature had a significant effect on the effective diffusivity and coefficient of mass transfer during the dramatically falling period of the biomass drying process. However, it was affected by the effective diffusivity and coefficient of mass transfer during the slowly falling period. The initial moisture caused the opposite effect during the different periods. The normalized biomass moisture content generally increased with the increase in drying temperature, and decreased with the increase in initial moisture content. The initial moisture content had an effect on the normalized biomass moisture during the slowly rising period. Meanwhile, the drying temperature had an effect on the normalized biomass moisture during the whole period. The critical moisture content and the normalized biomass moisture content had negative relevant relationship. This study provides some valuable conclusions regarding the biomass drying process. Measurements of the cathodoluminescence (CL) and the degree of polarization (DOP) of (CL) from the facet of a GaAs substrate and in the vicinity of a SiN stripe are reported and analyzed. The deformation induced by the SiN stripe is estimated by fitting the measured DOP to 3D finite element method (FEM) simulations. The deformation is found to be more complex than an initial condition of biaxial stress in the SiN. A ratio of fit coefficients suggests that the dependence of DOP on strain is described by equations presented in Appl. Opt. 59, 5506–5520 (2020). These equations give a DOP that is either proportional to a weighted difference of the principal components of strain in the measurement plane, or proportional to the shear strain in the measurement plane, depending on the chosen orientation of the measurement axes. Objectives: Tissue breakdown was assessed by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) using autofluorescence around implants with ligatures, on a dog hemimandible. Influence of section thickness on the accuracy of histometrical observations was also evaluated, in comparison with thin sections in light microscopy. Material and Methods: Three months after tooth extraction, implants were placed. Two months after abutment placement, ligatures were placed with no plaque control. 11 months post-implantation, the animal was sacrificed. Undecalcified thin (30 µm) sections were cut, stained and evaluated by light microscopy to be used as a reference. Additional sections were performed, so that another pair of unstained thick sections resulted (250–300 µm). Tissue loss was assessed using histomorphometric parameters under CLSM and was compared to the light microscopy reference ones. Results: Morphometry confirmed tissue loss more pronounced on the “thick” and quick sections, when compared to the time-consuming and technique-sensitive “thin” ones. Conclusions: Within the limits of the present study, the adequacy of histometrical observations under CLSM reveal commensurable information about soft-tissue-bone-implant details, when compared to traditional light microscopy histological protocols. The CLSM investigation may seem demanding, yet the richness of data acquired may justify this approach, provided seatbacks caused by improper manipulation of “thick” sections are avoided. Microbial degradation of lignin, a natural complex biopolymer, a renewable raw material with a wide range of applications, has been mainly directed at fungal systems, nevertheless, recent studies have proposed the bacterial role in lignin degradation and modification since bacteria possess remarkable environmental adaptability, and various production of enzymes and biochemistry. An occurrence of a high proportion of lignin-degrading genes has been confirmed in actinobacteria and proteobacteria classes by bioinformatics analysis, which points to the probability of undiscovered pathways and enzymes. Because of that, bacterial lignin decomposition might be substantially different from fungal lignin decomposition. Bacteria capable of lignin modification and degradation belong to actinomycetes, some Firmicutes, α-proteobacteria, and γ-proteobacteria. The enzymes responsible for lignin degradation are lignin peroxidase, manganese-dependent peroxidase, versatile peroxidase, dye-decolourizing peroxidase, and laccases. One of the main lignin producers is the pulp and paper manufacturing industry. Lignolytic microorganisms have been identified from diverse habitats, such as in plants, soil, wood, and the gut. Bacterial strains Bacillus, Rhodococcus, Sterptomyces, and Pseudomonas have been reported to have lignin decomposition ability. This review aims to describe the role of bacteria in lignin degradation, bacterial species, and bacterial enzymes included in lignin degradation. Several reports about bacterial species involved in lignin degradation are also highlighted, and the current state of the knowledge on the degradation of lignin from the pulp and paper manufacturing industry are reported. Background: Methotrexate (MTX) is an effective anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory agent. However, it induces a serious pneumonitis that leads to irreversible fibrotic lung damage. This study addresses the protective role of the natural flavonoid dihydromyricetin (DHM) against MTX-induced pneumonitis via modulation of Nrf2/NF-κB signaling crosstalk. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control, which received the vehicle; MTX, which received a single MTX (40 mg/kg, i.p) at day 9 of the experiment; (MTX + DHM), which received oral DHM (300 mg/kg) for 14 days and methotrexate (40 mg/kg, i.p) on the 9th day; and DHM, which received DHM (300 mg/kg, p.o) for 14 days. Results: Lung histopathological examination and scoring showed a decline in MTX-induced alveolar epithelial damage and decreased inflammatory cell infiltration by DHM treatment. Further, DHM significantly alleviated the oxidative stress by decreasing MDA while increasing GSH and SOD antioxidant levels. Additionally, DHM suppressed the pulmonary inflammation and fibrosis through decreasing levels of NF-κB, IL-1β, and TGF-β1 while promoting the expression of Nrf2, a positive regulator of antioxidant genes, and its downstream modulator, HO-1. Conclusion: This study identified DHM as a promising therapeutic target against MTX-induced pneumonitis via activation of Nrf2 antioxidant signaling while suppressing the NF-κB mediated inflammatory pathways. We have performed a detailed analysis of the soundscape inside an urban park (located in the city of Milan) based on simultaneous sound recordings at 16 locations within the park. The sound sensors were deployed over a regular grid covering an area of about 22 hectares, surrounded by a variety of anthropophonic sources. The recordings span 3.5 h each over a period of four consecutive days. We aimed at determining a soundscape ranking index (SRI) evaluated at each site in the grid by introducing 4 unknown parameters. To this end, a careful aural survey from a single day was performed in order to identify the presence of 19 predefined sound categories within a minute, every 3 minutes of recording. It is found that all SRI values fluctuate considerably within the 70 time intervals considered. The corresponding histograms were used to define a dissimilarity function for each pair of sites. Dissimilarity was found to increase significantly with the inter-site distance in space. Optimal values of the 4 parameters were obtained by minimizing the standard deviation of the data, consistent with a fifth parameter describing the variation of dissimilarity with distance. As a result, we classify the sites into three main categories: “poor”, “medium” and “good” environmental sound quality. This study can be useful to assess the quality of a soundscape in general situations. Full article

This paper introduces and fleshes out a systemic method designed to develop a holistic understanding of states’ behavior in transboundary water conflict and cooperation. Such an approach leverages causality analysis to capture the deep structural characteristics that shape the hydropolitics dynamics and may lead to the evolution of destructive behaviors with severe consequences. The paper does so by using the concepts of the system archetype. The system archetype analysis offers insight into the underlying structures from which the dynamics of hydropolitics emerge over time—cycles of conflict and cooperation. The approach provides riparian states with a diagnostic tool to recognize patterns of destructive behaviors in the management of shared water resources and warning signs that are usually too long overlooked. Using four case studies from different continents, this paper shows how a systems archetype approach is useful for developing a big-picture understanding of the hydropolitical problem, its dynamics, and potential resolution pathways. The systemic lessons learned from these case studies can be used in other contexts, helping policymakers anticipate the destructive and constructive dynamics leading to conflict and cooperation. Waste tires are known as “black pollution”, which is difficult to degrade. The safe handling and recycling of waste tires have always been the focus of and difficulty for the global rubber industry. Pyrolysis can not only solve the problem of environmental pollution but also completely treat the waste tires and recover valuable pyrolysis products. This paper summarizes research progress on the pyrolysis of waste tires, including the pyrolysis mechanism; the important factors affecting the pyrolysis of waste tires (pyrolysis temperature and catalysts); and the composition, properties, and applications of the three kinds of pyrolysis products. The composition and yield of pyrolysis products can be regulated by pyrolysis temperature and catalysts, and pyrolysis products can be well used in many industrial occasions after different forms of post-treatment. Many lncRNAs, either host or virus-encoded, have been implicated in critical cellular defense processes, such as cytokine and antiviral gene expression, the regulation of cell signaling pathways, and the activation of transcription factors. In addition, cellular and viral lncRNAs regulate virus gene expression. Viral infections and associated immune responses alter the expression of host lncRNAs regulating immune responses, host metabolism, and viral replication. The influence of lncRNAs on the pathogenesis and outcomes of viral infections is being widely explored because virus-induced lncRNAs can serve as diagnostic and therapeutic targets. Future studies should focus on thoroughly characterizing lncRNA expressions in virus-infected primary cells, investigating their role in disease prognosis, and developing biologically relevant animal or organoid models to determine their suitability for specific therapeutic targeting. Many cellular and viral lncRNAs localize in the nucleus and epigenetically modulate viral transcription, latency, and host responses to infection. In this review, we provide an overview of the role of nuclear lncRNAs in the pathogenesis and outcomes of viral infections, such as the Influenza A virus, Sendai Virus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Hepatitis C virus, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, and Herpes Simplex Virus. We also address significant advances and barriers in characterizing lncRNA function and explore the potential of lncRNAs as therapeutic targets. Full article

CFD Investigation for Sonar Dome with Bulbous Bow Effect

The objective of this study is to design a hull-mounted sonar dome of a ship using OpenFOAM with a bulbous bow effect at cruise speed in calm water. Verification and validation for the original sonar dome simulation are conducted. Next, the 1.44 million grid size is selected to study different dome lengths. By protruding the dome forward 7.5% of the ship’s length, the optimal 17% resistance reduction is achieved and is mainly caused by the pressure resistance decrease. The optimal sonar dome not only functions in the same way as a bulbous bow, but the viscous flow behaviors are also improved. The protrusion corresponding to 90 deg phase lag reduces the bow wave amplitude. The flow acceleration outside the boundary layer and ship wake velocity are higher coinciding with the much lower total resistance. A smaller flow separation and thinner boundary layer are also observed behind the sonar dome because its back slope is less steep. The high pressure covers a smaller area around the bow, and the smaller bow wave crest does not hit the ship’s flare to form high pressure. Consequently, the lower high pressure on the dome front and higher low pressure on the dome back result in the decreases in pressure resistance. The vortical structures are also improved. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a severe mental illness with grave social, political, economic, and humanitarian implications. To apply the principles of personalized omics-based medicine to this psychiatric problem, we implemented our previously introduced drug efficiency index (DEI) to the PTSD gene expression datasets. Generally, omics-based personalized medicine evaluates individual drug action using two classes of data: (1) gene expression, mutation, and Big Data profiles, and (2) molecular pathway graphs that reflect the protein–protein interaction. In the particular case of the DEI metric, we evaluate the drug action according to the drug’s ability to restore healthy (control) activation levels of molecular pathways. We have curated five PTSD and one TRD (treatment-resistant depression) cohorts of next-generation sequencing (NGS) and microarray hybridization (MH) gene expression profiles, which, in total, comprise 791 samples, including 379 cases and 413 controls. To check the applicability of our DEI metrics, we have performed three differential studies with gene expression and pathway activation data: (1) case samples vs. control samples, (2) case samples after treatment or/and observation vs. before treatment, and (3) samples from patients positively responding to the treatment vs. those responding negatively or non-responding patients. We found that the DEI values that use the signaling pathway impact activation (SPIA) metric were better than those that used the Oncobox pathway activation level (Oncobox PAL) approach. However, SPIA, Oncobox PAL, and DEI evaluations were reliable only if there were differential genes between case and control, or treated and untreated, samples. Full article

Carrot is one of the most frequently grown vegetables in Poland and in the world. Seed-borne pathogenic fungi negatively influence their quality as well as the quantity and quality of carrot root yield. Melatonin is a PGR, which includes protective effects against biotic and abiotic stress factors and antioxidant effects. The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of osmopriming with melatonin on germination, vigor and carrot seeds health. Carrot seeds were osmoprimed in a solution of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with an osmotic potential of −1.5 MPa at 20 °C for 7 days; melatonin was added to the PEG solution at doses of 25, 50, 100 or 200 µM. Generally, osmopriming with the addition of melatonin significantly improved germination capacity at first and final counts (sample I about 7–14% and sample II 35–43%), reduced the incidence of Alternaria alternata, A. radicina and Fusarium spp. and increased the percentage of non-sporulating hyphae. Treating accelerated the germination of seeds at a significant rate in comparison with untreated seeds and treated with fungicide, especially at low dosage, i.e., 25–50 µM. MGT of primed seeds with the addition of melatonin at dose 25 µM shortened about 0.5 day (sample I) and 1 day (sample II) The effect of melatonin on seed quality parameters was comparable or better than treating with fungicide. The results suggest that melatonin could replace fungicides in the future, which are harmful to the environment. Full article

Background: Exercise capacity and patient-reported outcomes are increasingly considered crucial following aortic valve (AV) surgery in non-elderly adults. We aimed to prospectively evaluate the effect of native valve preservation compared with prosthetic valve replacement. Methods: From October 2017 to August 2020, 100 consecutive non-elderly patients undergoing surgery for severe AV disease were included. Exercise capacity and patient-reported outcomes were evaluated upon admission, and 3 months and 1 year postoperatively. Results: In total, 72 patients underwent native valve-preserving procedures (AV repair or Ross procedure, NV group), and 28 patients, prosthetic valve replacement (PV group). Native valve preservation was associated with an increased risk of reoperation (weighted hazard ratio: 10.57 (95% CI: 1.24–90.01), p = 0.031). The estimated average treatment effect on six-minute walking distance in NV patients at 1 year was positive, but not significant (35.64 m; 95% CI: −17.03–88.30, adj. p = 0.554). The postoperative physical and mental quality of life was comparable in both groups. Peak oxygen consumption and work rate were better at all assessment time points in NV patients. Marked longitudinal improvements in walking distance (NV, +47 m (adj. p < 0.001); PV, +25 m (adj. p = 0.004)) and physical (NV, +7 points (adj. p = 0.023); PV, +10 points (adj. p = 0.005)) and mental quality of life (NV, +7 points (adj. p < 0.001); PV, +5 points (adj. p = 0.058)) from the preoperative period to the 1-year follow-up were observed. At 1 year, there was a tendency of more NV patients reaching reference values of walking distance. Conclusions: Despite the increased risk of reoperation, physical and mental performance markedly improved after native valve-preserving surgery and was comparable to that after prosthetic aortic valve replacement. Collagen membranes are routinely used in oral surgery for bone regeneration. Despite their numerous advantages, such as stimulating bone growth, bacterial contamination still remains one of the disadvantages of membrane use. Thus, we assessed the biocompatibility and osteogenic and antibacterial properties of a collagen membrane (OsteoBiol) modified with chitosan (CHI) and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles (HApNPs). Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) were performed for membrane characterization. Biocompatibility was assessed on dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) by an MTT assay, while the osteogenic effect was assessed by an ALP activity assay and qPCR analysis of osteogenic markers (BMP4, ALP, RUNX2, and OCN). Antimicrobial properties were investigated by counting colony-forming units (CFUs) of Streptococcus mitis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Fusobaterium nucleatum on membranes and in the surrounding medium. Membranes showed no cytotoxicity. ALP activity was higher and ALP, BMP4, and OCN genes were up-regulated in DPSCs on modified membranes compared to unmodified membranes. The CFUs were reduced on modified membranes and in the medium. Modified membranes showed great biocompatibility and a high osteoinductive effect. Additionally, they showed antimicrobial and antibiofilm effects against periopathogens. It can be concluded that the incorporation of CHI and hydroxyapatite nanoparticles in collagen membranes may be advantageous to promote osteogenesis and reduce bacterial adhesion. Full article

Maintaining good health for as long as possible presents a great challenge for the elderly. As the elderly population is growing, there is an ongoing need to identify health risk factors affecting older individuals. The study aimed to explore relationships between sociodemographic characteristics, diet, physical activity, and prevalence of metabolic diseases and impaired mobility in the Polish elderly. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 417 elderlies in May–July 2021. Cluster analysis was applied to separate four homogeneous clusters based on the prevalence of metabolic disease and impaired mobility. Logistic regression analysis was used to verify associations between variables. Being overweight or having obesity, as well as following a diet, increased the probability of being affected by metabolic disease. Being well educated, having a better financial situation, positive perception of own health, and having at least moderate physical activity decreased the probability of suffering from mobility impairments. Eating behaviors were not found to be predictors of the disease. However, they differentiated the selected clusters. The results confirmed the heterogeneity of factors that may impact healthy aging. Thus, they should be taken into account by public health authorities to develop health promotion actions adjusted to the needs of specific subgroups. Full article

The inspection and maintenance of track ballast are fundamental tasks for the preservation of the condition of railway networks. This work presents an application based on a low-cost solid-state LiDAR system, which allows the user to accurately measure the ballast geometry from a mobile inspection trolley or draisine. The solid-state LiDAR system, the LiVOX Avia, was validated on a test track through comparison with a traditional static LiDAR system, the Faro Focus 3D. The results show a standard deviation of around 6 mm for the solid-state LiDAR system. The LiVOX system also provides the capability to measure the ballast digital elevation model and profiles. The LiVOX results are in agreement with those obtained from the Faro Focus. The results demonstrate that the LiVOX system can sufficiently measure even the displacement of a single layer of ballast stones typically between 2.5 cm and 5 cm. The data provided can be easily digitalized using image processing tools and integrated into geographic information systems for infrastructure management. Full article

This review delineates the main pulmonary issues related to preterm birth, perinatal tobacco/nicotine exposure, and its effects on offspring, focusing on respiratory health and its possible transmission to subsequent generations. We review the extent of the problem of preterm birth, prematurity-related pulmonary effects, and the associated increased risk of asthma later in life. We then review the impact of developmental tobacco/nicotine exposure on offspring asthma and the significance of transgenerational pulmonary effects following perinatal tobacco/nicotine exposure, possibly via its effects on germline epigenetics. (1) Background: Uric acid is a well-known cardiovascular (CV) risk factor in the general population but its role in the setting of rheumatic diseases other than gout is unclear. (2) Methods: This is a retrospective study investigating a cohort of 105 pSS patients recording clinical, serological, and CV-related variables including adherence to the Mediterranean diet. (3) Results: We observed a strong relationship between disease activity, interstitial lung disease (ILD), and CV events. The association between ILD and CV events was dependent on higher SUA levels but independent of other traditional CV risk factors. All three cases of previous non-fatal stroke were reported by females aged <65 years, with higher SUA levels, and two of them also had pSS-ILD. Forty (38%) patients had a 10-year risk of fatal and non-fatal CV disease events beyond the cut-off recommended for their age, and using the correction factor of 1.5 currently applied only to rheumatoid arthritis, we could better identify patient subsets characterized by different CV risk profiles including different SUA levels. (4) Conclusions: This study is the first to investigate in depth the role of SUA in the CV scenario of pSS. Our findings underpin the importance of assessing SUA levels in pSS in addition to the other traditional CV risk factors and to consider applying the correction factor for CV risk assessment tools to achieve a better stratification of CV risk. This study is concerned with recent analyses of seven marble statues from the imperial cycle of the Augusteum of Rusellae, in the south of Tuscany, Italy. The sculptures represent the deified couple Augustus and Livia, Livilla, Claudius, an anonymous young girl and a headless cuirassed emperor (maybe Domitian). In addition, a fragment of a leg, from another cuirassed statue, was also considered. All of them are preserved in the city of Grosseto, in the Maremma Archaeology and Art Museum. Still preserved traces of polychromy and gilding were investigated both in situ, using non-invasive portable techniques, and in laboratory, taking two micro-samples. The non-invasive approach was based on multi-band imaging techniques (Vis, UVL and VIL) integrated with analyses (XRF, reflectance spectroscopy). A portable optical microscopy was also used for documenting the analysed areas. Two micro-samples from the gilding decoration of the headless cuirassed statue were also analysed using EDS-SEM. Comparing the results from the analytical survey, important information about the use of ochres and Egyptian blue on the cuirassed headless Emperor statue has been highlighted with the presence of gilding in the cuirasses and in the mantle, enriching the knowledge of this important imperial cycle, in addition to contributing to the archaeological point of view. Improvement of Autonomy, Efficiency, and Stress of Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicle System Using Robust Controller

Among issues facing the transportation sector today is the limited autonomy of electric vehicles, which are highly reliant upon energy storage systems. Considering this issue as the current research gap, researchers seek to prolong vehicle dependability through renewable-free and sustainable energy that tackles negative environmental impacts. This research exploits the electric vehicle’s kinetic energy to improve its performance and reliability. It uses fuel-cell resources and supercapacitors hybridized with lithium-ion batteries, in addition to DC generators connected to front wheels that convert their rotations into energy contributing to the vehicle’s overall power balance. A state machine-based energy management strategy computes fuel-cell setpoint power, while a dual-loop structure uses a super-twisting controller for DC bus voltage regulation and recovery, in addition to tracking banks’ setpoint currents. A speed controller-based artificial intelligence is proposed to reduce power losses and enable accurate tracking of running trajectory to improve vehicle mechanisms. The simulation results using Matlab Simulink software proved the proposed vehicle’s feasibility by adopting the free kinetic energy of additional DC generators that provided 28% of its total power requirements, resulting in superior supply efficiency reaching 98%. Thus, the stress on FC and battery was minimized by 21% and 10%, respectively, in addition to reducing fuel consumption by 39%, so the vehicle autonomy was extended, and its reliability was enhanced and supported, as targeted. This paper evaluates the effects of JPEG compression on image classification using the Vision Transformer (ViT). In recent years, many studies have been carried out to classify images in the encrypted domain for privacy preservation. Previously, the authors proposed an image classification method that encrypts both a trained ViT model and test images. Here, an encryption-then-compression system was employed to encrypt the test images, and the ViT model was preliminarily trained by plain images. The classification accuracy in the previous method was exactly equal to that without any encryption for the trained ViT model and test images. However, even though the encrypted test images can be compressible, the practical effects of JPEG, which is a typical lossy compression method, have not been investigated so far. In this paper, we extend our previous method by compressing the encrypted test images with JPEG and verify the classification accuracy for the compressed encrypted-images. Through our experiments, we confirm that the amount of data in the encrypted images can be significantly reduced by JPEG compression, while the classification accuracy of the compressed encrypted-images is highly preserved. For example, when the quality factor is set to 85, this paper shows that the classification accuracy can be maintained at over 98% with a more than 90% reduction in the amount of image data. Additionally, the effectiveness of JPEG compression is demonstrated through comparison with linear quantization. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to classify JPEG-compressed encrypted images without sacrificing high accuracy. Through our study, we have come to the conclusion that we can classify compressed encrypted-images without degradation to accuracy. Full article

Landslide susceptibility analysis has become a necessary means of pre-disaster portal positioning and scientific early warning. How can an effective zoning model of landslide susceptibility be established to examine the important factors affecting landslide development in coal mine areas? Focusing on the need for a reliability analysis of landslide susceptibility in coal mine areas, landslide cataloging and environmental factor data were used as objects, combined with the knowledge of landslide mechanisms, disaster environmental factors and the spatial correlation of landslide disasters, the frequent landslide area of Jiumine in the main part of Xishan Coalfield was selected as the research area, and more than 50 influencing factors were collected and calculated. Eighteen factors with correlation coefficients of less than 0.3 were selected, and a landslide susceptibility analysis method combining the spatial characteristics of landslide factors and the heuristic fuzzy logic model was proposed. The influence of the fuzzy logic model on the accuracy of landslide susceptibility analysis results under different constraint modes was tested. The model is a mixture of knowledge-driven and data-driven models, and is compared with information model and SVM. Experimental results show that the proposed method is feasible and reliable, and improves the accuracy of model results. Full article
