The research aimed to assess the effects of auditory environmental enrichment on sows in mixed housing (caged until 35 days after insemination and then collective pens) or collective housing (caged until 72 h after insemination and then collective pens). Reproductive performance, body surface and eye temperature (ET) were evaluated as sows’ welfare indicators. A sample of 56 sows between 2nd and 6th parity was submitted to the treatments from artificial insemination to weaning. The sows were assigned in a randomized block design with a 2 × 2 factorial scheme of treatments: mixed housing—control (MH-C), collective housing—control (CH-C), mixed housing—music (MH-M) and collective housing—music (CH-M). Auditory enrichment consisted of exposing sows daily throughout gestation and lactation to 6 h of classical music divided into 2 h periods. The ET of pregnant sows in collective housing was lower than that of sows in mixed housing (33.77 °C vs. 34.91 °C). Pregnant and lactating sows exposed to auditory environmental enrichment exhibited lower ET compared to those that had no access to the stimulus (pregnant 33.36 °C vs. 34.32 °C and lactating 34.21 °C vs. 34.83 °C). No housing type effect was found on the reproductive performance parameter; however, piglets from sows submitted to auditory environmental enrichment, regardless of the type of housing during gestation, were heavier at weaning (6.32 kg vs. 5.57 kg). Collective or mixed housing does not affect sows’ reproductive performance; perhaps, auditory environmental enrichment reduced stress in the gestation and lactation phases and provided greater piglet weight gain at weaning.

In this study, a series of Bi2MoO6/g-C3N4 composites were prepared through a wet-impregnation method, and their photocatalytic properties were investigated for the degradation of sulfadiazine (SDZ) under visible light irradiation. Physical and chemical characterizations were carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis), and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS). Compared to pure g-C3N4, the introduction of Bi2MoO6 significantly enhanced the visible light responsive photocatalytic activity, with the 1:32 Bi2MoO6/g-C3N4 composite exhibiting the highest photodegradation efficiency towards SDZ under visible light irradiation with a photocatalytic efficiency of 93.88% after 120 min of visible light irradiation. The improved photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the formation of a heterojunction between Bi2MoO6 and g-C3N4, which promotes the transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thereby elevating its photocatalytic activity. The results suggest that Bi2MoO6/g-C3N4 composites have potential application for the degradation of sulfonamides in aquatic environments.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disease mainly characterized by the hepatic accumulation of lipid inducing a deregulation of β-oxidation. Its advanced form is non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which, in addition to lipid accumulation, induces hepatocellular damage, oxidative stress and fibrosis that can progress to cirrhosis and to its final stage: hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). To date, no specific therapeutic treatment exists. The implications of organ crosstalk have been highlighted in many metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, metabolic-associated liver diseases and obesity. Skeletal muscle, in addition to its role as a reservoir and consumer of energy and carbohydrate metabolism, is involved in this inter-organs’ communication through different secreted products: myokines, exosomes and enzymes, for example. Interestingly, resistance exercise has been shown to have a beneficial impact on different metabolic pathways, such as lipid oxidation in different organs through their secreted products. In this review, we will mainly focus on myokines and their effects on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and their complication: non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and HCC.

Waves of breakthrough infections by SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariants currently pose a global challenge to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. We previously reported a pVAX1-based DNA vaccine candidate, pAD1002, that encodes a receptor-binding domain (RBD) chimera of SARS-CoV-1 and Omicron BA.1. In mouse and rabbit models, pAD1002 plasmid induced cross-neutralizing Abs against heterologous sarbecoviruses, including SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 wildtype, Delta and Omicron variants. However, these antisera failed to block the recent emerging Omicron subvariants BF.7 and BQ.1. To solve this problem, we replaced the BA.1 RBD-encoding DNA sequence in pAD1002 with that of BA.4/5. The resulting construct, namely pAD1016, elicited SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 RBD-specific IFN-γ+ cellular responses in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. More importantly, pAD1016 vaccination in mice, rabbits and pigs generated serum Abs capable of neutralizing pseudoviruses representing multiple SARS-CoV-2 Omicron subvariants including BA.2, BA.4/5, BF.7, BQ.1 and XBB. As a booster vaccine for inactivated SARS-CoV-2 virus preimmunization in mice, pAD1016 broadened the serum Ab neutralization spectrum to cover the Omicron BA.4/5, BF7 and BQ.1 subvariants. These preliminary data highlight the potential benefit of pAD1016 in eliciting neutralizing Abs against broad-spectrum Omicron subvariants in individuals previously vaccinated with inactivated prototype SARS-CoV-2 virus and suggests that pAD1016 is worthy of further translational study as a COVID-19 vaccine candidate.

To develop novel 2-cyanoacrylate derivatives with potential bioactivity, a number of 2-cyanoacrylate compounds, including substituted pyrazole or 1,2,3-triazole ring, were designed, prepared, and structurally detected by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and elemental analysis. The biological assessment displayed that some designed compounds had significant herbicidal activities against Brassica juncea, Chenopodium serotinum, Rumex acetosa, Alopecurus aequalis, Polypogon fugax, and Poa annua at a dosage of 1500 g/ha. Furthermore, some derivatives still expressed satisfactory herbicidal activities against Brassica juncea, Chenopodium serotinum, and Rumex acetosa when the dosage was lowered to 150 g/ha, especially the inhibitory effects of compounds 9a, 9d, 9f, 9i, 10a, 10b, 10e, and 10n against Brassica juncea were all over 80%, compounds 9d, 9f, 9g, 9h, 9i, 10h, 10i, 10m, 10n, and 10o possessed more than 70% inhibition rates against Chenopodium serotinum, and compound 9d indicated 70% herbicidal activity against Rumex acetosa. These results provided an important basis for further design and discovery of biologically active 2-cyanoacrylate compounds.

The detection of gene fusions by RNA-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) is an emerging method in clinical genetic laboratories for oncology biomarker testing to direct targeted therapy selections. A recent Canadian study (CANTRK study) comparing the detection of NTRK gene fusions on different NGS assays to determine subjects’ eligibility for tyrosine kinase TRK inhibitor therapy identified the need for recommendations for best practices for laboratory testing to optimize RNA-based NGS gene fusion detection. To develop consensus recommendations, representatives from 17 Canadian genetic laboratories participated in working group discussions and the completion of survey questions about RNA-based NGS. Consensus recommendations are presented for pre-analytic, analytic and reporting aspects of gene fusion detection by RNA-based NGS.

Based on high-stress characteristics of prestressed anchor cables, this paper develops an axial-distributed testing method to test corrosion damage of prestressed anchor cables. The positioning accuracy and corrosion range of an axial-distributed optical fiber sensor is studied, and its mathematical model between corrosion mass loss and axial fiber strain is established. The experimental results show that the fiber strain from an axial-distributed sensor enables one to reflect the corrosion rate along a prestressed anchor. Moreover, it has a greater sensitivity when an anchored cable has a higher stress. The mathematical model between corrosion mass loss and axial fiber strain is determined to be . The corrosion location along the anchor cable is characterized by axial fiber strain. Therefore, this work provides an insight for cable corrosion.

Nano-titanium dioxides (nano-TiO2) surface modified with isopropyl tri(dioctylpyrophosphate) titanate (NDZ-201), a titanate coupling agent, and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (KH-560), a silane coupling agent, were separately mixed with bisphenol A epoxy resin (DEGBA) prepolymer and then cured using a UV-normal temperature synergistic curing process. Then, the isothermal curing process of the system was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The relationship between the organization structures, mechanical properties, and heat resistance properties of the cured composites and material formulation was studied, and the DSC results showed that the addition of nano-TiO2 reduced the curing reaction rate constant k1 and increased the k2 of the prepolymer, while the activation energy of the curing reaction after UV irradiation Ea1 decreased, and the activation energy in the middle and later periods Ea2 increased. The characterization results of the composite material showed that nano-TiO2 as a scattering agent reduced the photoinitiation efficiency of UV light, and due to its obvious agglomeration tendency in the epoxy resin, the mechanical properties of the composite material were poor. The dispersibility of the coupling-agent-modified nano-TiO2 in the epoxy resin was greatly enhanced, and the mechanical and heat resistance properties of the composite material improved remarkably. The comparison results of the two coupling agents showed that NDZ-201 had better performance in increasing the impact strength by 6.8% (minimum value, the same below) and the maximum thermal decomposition rate temperature by 4.88 °C of the composite, while KH-560 improved the tensile strength by 7.3% and the glass transition temperature (Tg) by 3.34 °C of the composite.

Low-temperature plasma is a new agricultural green technology, which can improve the yield and quality of rice. How to identify the harvest rice grown by plasma seed treatment plays an important role in the popularization and application of low-temperature plasma in agriculture. This study collected hyperspectral data of harvest rice, including plasma seed treated rice, and constructed a recognition model based on the hyperspectral image (HSI) by 3D ResNet (HSI-3DResNet), which extracts spatial spectral features of HSI data cubes through 3D convolution. In addition, a spectral channels 3D attention module (C3DAM) is proposed, which can extract key features of spectra. Experiments showed that the proposed C3DAM can improve the recognition accuracy of the model to 4.2%, while the size and parameters of the model only increase by 4.1% and 3.8%, respectively. The HSI-3DResNet proposed in this study is superior to other methods with the overall accuracy of 97.47%. At the same time, the algorithm proposed in this paper was also verified on a public dataset.

Background: Communicable diseases remain a significant global health issue. The increase in refugees and asylum seekers associated with conflicts may alter the burden of communicable diseases in host countries. We conducted a systematic review of the prevalence of TB, HBC, HCV, and HIV among refugees and asylum seekers by regions of asylum and origin. Methods: Four electronic databases were searched from initiation to the 25 December 2022. Prevalence estimates were pooled into a random-effect model and were stratified by the region of origin and asylum. Meta-analysis was conducted to explore the heterogeneity of the included studies. Results: The most-reported asylum region was The Americas, represented by the United States of America. Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean was the region of the most-reported origin. The highest reported prevalence of active TB and HIV was among African refugees and asylum seekers. The highest reported prevalence of latent TB, HBV and HCV was among Asian and Eastern Mediterranean refugees and asylum seekers. High heterogeneity was found regardless of the communicable disease type or stratification. Conclusion: This review provided insights about refugees’ and asylum seekers’ status around the world and attempted to connect refugees’ and asylum seekers’ distribution and the burden of communicable diseases.

The microbiome consists mostly of bacteria, but new evidence and developments in sequencing methods have shown that fungi play an important role in human health and in the stability of the microbiota. Scientific knowledge about the role of commensal fungi in intestinal, oral, vaginal and cutaneous communities has been increasing; however, more studies are still needed to better understand their action in these niches. To date, fungal research focuses primarily on opportunistic diseases caused by fungal species, leaving unclear the possible role of fungi as an integral part of the microbiota. Although they are much less abundant than bacteria, fungi such as species belonging to the genus Candida, Malassezia, Rhodotorula and Cryptococcus are some of the yeasts that have been in the focus of the scientific community because they inhabit various niches. In this review, we have summarized the current information about the yeasts that inhabit the human body, including some of the diseases that they can cause when the microbiota becomes unstable.

Optimizing traffic control systems at traffic intersections can reduce the network-wide fuel consumption, as well as emissions of conventional fuel-powered vehicles. While traffic signals have been controlled based on predetermined schedules, various adaptive signal control systems have recently been developed using advanced sensors such as cameras, radars, and LiDARs. Among these sensors, cameras can provide a cost-effective way to determine the number, location, type, and speed of the vehicles for better-informed decision-making at traffic intersections. In this research, a new approach for accurately determining vehicle locations near traffic intersections using a single camera is presented. For that purpose, a well-known object detection algorithm called YOLO is used to determine vehicle locations in video images captured by a traffic camera. YOLO draws a bounding box around each detected vehicle, and the vehicle location in the image coordinates is converted to the world coordinates using camera calibration data. During this process, a significant error between the center of a vehicle’s bounding box and the real center of the vehicle in the world coordinates is generated due to the angled view of the vehicles by a camera installed on a traffic light pole. As a means of mitigating this vehicle localization error, two different types of regression models are trained and applied to the centers of the bounding boxes of the camera-detected vehicles. The accuracy of the proposed approach is validated using both static camera images and live-streamed traffic video. Based on the improved vehicle localization, it is expected that more accurate traffic signal control can be made to improve the overall network-wide energy efficiency and traffic flow at traffic intersections.

Electoral thresholds in the context of parliamentary elections are an instrument for preventing the fragmentation of parliaments and facilitate the formation of a coalition government. However, the clauses also introduce distortions and modify the equality of electoral votes in an election. In order to decide to what extent these negative effects can be accepted, it is necessary to measure the difficulties in forming a coalition government and to quantify the effects of electoral thresholds on these difficulties. For this issue, we introduce a concept based on cooperative game theory which takes into account the distribution of seats in parliament and coalition statements of parties.

The aim of this paper is to obtain the image information based on a given image of mold flux and to obtain the features that can describe the dynamical difference. The melting and crystallization dynamics of the slag were analyzed using the autoregressive moving average (ARIMA) time series model and data fitting method. Firstly, the binary image of the digital region of the original image was obtained by image information processing and segmentation methods, the original image number was determined by comparing the similarity of the information matrices of the given and standard images. The standard number with the highest similarity was considered as the number of the original image, and MATLAB was used to solve the problem, the digital information in all the images was successfully extracted. Secondly, ten eigenvalues were extracted from the given image after removing the background, and three principal components were obtained by principal component analysis. Then, a scoring model was constructed based on the percentage of variance, and the comprehensive scores of the three principal components to analyze the melting and crystallization process of the mold flux. Finally, based on the above work, the dynamic relationship between temperature, time and the melting and crystallization process of the mold flux was investigated. Since the temperature is approximately linearly correlated with time, the problem was transformed into finding the relationship between the melting and crystallization process of the mold flux and time. The least squares method, polynomial fitting and other methods were used to derive the relationship function, the relationship between the melting and crystallization process of mold flux and temperature and time was quantitatively analyzed.

Several Mediterranean traditional cheeses may present a beneficial effect on postprandial metabolic and inflammatory modulation due to the presence of bioactive components. The objective of the present preliminary nutritional intervention was the investigation of the postprandial metabolic responses after the intake of traditional Authentic Mytilinis cheese in olive oil with herbs, compared to the corresponding responses after consumption of Italian Parmesan cheese, in healthy participants. A pilot crossover, randomized, single-blinded, intervention clinical trial was conducted in 10 healthy men and women subjects, aged 18–30 years, after random allocation into the control and the intervention groups. The participants received a high-fat carbohydrate meal containing either Authentic Mytilinis cheese (the authentic nonrefrigerated recipe) or Italian Parmesan PDO cheese. After a washout week, the participants consumed the same meals conversely. Differences in the postprandial responses of glucose, triglycerides, uric acid and serum total, HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, as well as of the plasma total antioxidant capacity according to the FRAP method, were determined between groups for fasting, 30 min, 1.5 h, and 3 h after meal intake. The results suggested that meals did not significantly affect postprandial metabolic and inflammatory responses. However, Authentic L Mytilinis cheese resulted in a lower increase of LDL cholesterol (p > 0.05) and induced a significant decrease of serum triglycerides (p < 0.05) in the last 1.5 h after a meal, compared to Italian Parmesan cheese. Further investigation with large prospective studies is necessary to validate the current findings.

The rising incidence of youth unemployment, especially in emerging economies, calls for prompt attention of development experts and policy makers given its effect on sustainable growth. This challenge has worsened in recent times in Nigeria, hence, making it crucial to understand the factors driving youth employment. We analyzed the differential impact of sectoral growth on youth employment across rural and urban areas through a gender lens and identified the specific conditions needed for investment in sectors with potentials for job creation in the Nigerian economy. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, revealed comparative advantage (RCA), employment elasticity, and Logit regression model. It was observed that Nigeria has demonstrated a comparative advantage in the export of 17 products. Our findings also revealed that all the economic sectors in Nigeria have potential for creating employment at different levels with financial services contributing the highest (0.734) and manufacturing the lowest (0.056). The increase in education influenced employment and a higher likelihood of male youths’ employment in the services, construction, and industry sectors as compared to more female youths in the trade sector. Some common conditions that could aid firms’ production scale-up and increase job creation across all sectors include: increased access to finance, improved infrastructure (road, water, air, power, and rail), and favorable interest rates and exchange rates. We recommend that concerted effort be targeted at mainstreaming gender in all sectoral policies and key sectors be strengthened through targeted welfare reforms aimed at enhancing the capacities of the youths for sectoral relevance.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by progressive weakness, respiratory insufficiency, and dysphagia. Due to symptom burden and disease progress, its care management and impact on daily life can severely burden the families of affected children. The objectives of this study are (1) to explore the health care experiences and (2) to investigate the psychosocial needs of the parents of children with SMA. In total, 29 parents of patients with SMA participated in our study. All children received supportive therapy (e.g., physiotherapy) and most were dependent on medical equipment. Parents perceived the health care positively regarding team quality, communication and access to medical care. An assessment of the impact of the child’s health on the family (e.g., stressors, burden, consequences) is not routinely integrated into care. On average, parents reported low to medium levels of psychosocial needs. Due to the complex health care needs of SMA patients, the health care experiences of parents can provide relevant information on care delivery. To enhance the inclusion of psychosocial and emotional issues, as well as family impact, into routine health care, health care providers should be sensitive towards parental needs for consistency in the health care team and emotional aspects and, if applicable, address them proactively.

Re-education of the tumor microenvironment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) has provided the most significant advancement in cancer management, with impressive efficacy and durable response reported. However, low response rates and a high frequency of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) remain associated with ICI therapies. The latter can be linked to their high affinity and avidity for their target that fosters on-target/off-tumor binding and subsequent breaking of immune self-tolerance in normal tissues. Many multispecific protein formats have been proposed to increase the tumor cell’s selectivity of ICI therapies. In this study, we explored the engineering of a bispecific Nanofitin by the fusion of an anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and anti-programmed cell death ligand 1 (PDL1) Nanofitin modules. While lowering the affinity of the Nanofitin modules for their respective target, the fusion enables the simultaneous engagement of EGFR and PDL1, which translates into a selective binding to tumor cells co-expressing EGFR and PDL1 only. We demonstrated that affinity-attenuated bispecific Nanofitin could elicit PDL1 blockade exclusively in an EGFR-directed manner. Overall, the data collected highlight the potential of this approach to enhance the selectivity and safety of PDL1 checkpoint inhibition.

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by bone marrow failure and aplastic anemia. So far, 23 genes are involved in this pathology, and their mutations lead to a defect in DNA repair. In recent years, it has been observed that FA cells also display mitochondrial metabolism defects, causing an accumulation of intracellular lipids and oxidative damage. However, the molecular mechanisms involved in the metabolic alterations have not yet been elucidated. In this work, by using lymphoblasts and fibroblasts mutated for the FANC-A gene, oxidative phosphorylation (OxPhos) and mitochondria dynamics markers expression was analyzed. Results show that the metabolic defect does not depend on an altered expression of the proteins involved in OxPhos. However, FA cells are characterized by increased uncoupling protein UCP2 expression. FANC-A mutation is also associated with DRP1 overexpression that causes an imbalance in the mitochondrial dynamic toward fission and lower expression of Parkin and Beclin1. Treatment with P110, a specific inhibitor of DRP1, shows a partial mitochondrial function recovery and the decrement of DRP1 and UCP2 expression, suggesting a pivotal role of the mitochondrial dynamics in the etiopathology of Fanconi anemia.

Complex mechanisms exist between public risk perception, emotions, and coping behaviors during health emergencies. To unravel the relationship between these three phenomena, a meta-analytic approach was employed in this study. Using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis 3.0, 81 papers were analyzed after selection. The results of the meta-analysis showed that (1) risk perception (perceived severity, perceived susceptibility) and negative emotions (especially fear) are both correlated with coping behaviors; (2) risk perception is strongly correlated with fear and moderately correlated with anxiety; and (3) anxiety predicts the adoption of coping behaviors. The existing research provided an empirical basis for implementing effective coping behavior interventions and implied that management decisionmakers need to consider reasonable interventions through multiple channels to maintain the public’s risk perception and emotions within appropriate levels. Finally, future research directions are suggested.

Performance evaluation of green supply chains (GSC) is an important tool to improve their comprehensive management. Identifying critical indicators is crucial to evaluation. This study examines the critical indicators in performance evaluations of GPC and provides relevant suggestions for managers to improve GSCs’ performances. Firstly, we summarized 24 evaluation indicators from five dimensions—financial value, customer service-level, business processes, innovation and development, and the so-called green level. Secondly, the Delphi method was used to determine the formal research framework. The fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory based analytic network process (fuzzy DEMATEL-based ANP) model was applied. The weighted prominence of each indicator was calculated to identify those that were critical, and a causality diagram was constructed for them. Finally, corresponding countermeasures and implications regarding those were put forward. The research results show that the critical indicators include the return rate of net assets, the growth rate of profit, the rate of service satisfaction, market share, production flexibility, and the green consensus. Among them, the green consensus, the growth rate of profit and the rate of service satisfaction form a virtuous circle, leading to the improvement of the overall performance of GSC.

Determining the operation scenarios of renewable energies is important for power system dispatching. This paper proposes a renewable scenario generation method based on the hybrid genetic algorithm with variable chromosome length (HGAVCL). The discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is used to divide the original data into linear and fluctuant parts according to the length of time scales. The HGAVCL is designed to optimally divide the linear part into different time sections. Additionally, each time section is described by the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. With the consideration of temporal correlation, the Copula joint probability density function is established to model the fluctuant part. Based on the attained ARIMA model and joint probability density function, a number of data are generated by the Monte Carlo method, and the time autocorrelation, average offset rate, and climbing similarity indexes are established to assess the data quality of generated scenarios. A case study is conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The calculated time autocorrelation, average offset rate, and climbing similarity are 0.0515, 0.0396, and 0.9035, respectively, which shows the superior performance of the proposed approach.

Responsible sustainable consumer behavior might serve as a complex pattern of social and environmental issues, consistent with the perspective of sustainability as a construct with both social and environmental pillars. Anchored on signaling theory and attribution theory, this study seeks to unearth a hitherto unexplored mechanism that might translate sustainability marketing into elevated responsible sustainable consumer behavior through the mediating role of brand image. Besides, this study aims to examine the impact of corporate social responsibility, as an intervening variable, to underpin the association between sustainability marketing and brand image. This study analyzes data from five-star and four-star hotel customers using SmartPLS SEM (v 4.0). The findings support our hypotheses that a hotel’s brand image mediates the relationship between sustainability marketing and responsible sustainable consumer behavior. In addition, hotels’ engagement in corporate social responsibility activities moderates the link between sustainability marketing and brand image, such that the association is stronger (weaker) at higher (lower) levels of corporate social responsibility. This study explores the boundary conditions of the sustainability marketing–responsible sustainable consumer behavior link. Hotels can foster responsible sustainable consumer behavior by executing sustainability marketing and engaging in corporate social responsibility activities.

A superhydrophobic (SH) surface is typically constructed by combining a low-surface-energy substance and a high-roughness microstructure. Although these surfaces have attracted considerable attention for their potential applications in oil/water separation, self-cleaning, and anti-icing devices, fabricating an environmentally friendly superhydrophobic surface that is durable, highly transparent, and mechanically robust is still challenging. Herein, we report a facile painting method to fabricate a new micro/nanostructure containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid/poly(dimethylsiloxane)/fluorinated SiO2 (EDTA/PDMS/F-SiO2) coatings on the surface of a textile with two different sizes of SiO2 particles, which have high transmittance (>90%) and mechanical robustness. The different-sized SiO2 particles were employed to construct the rough micro/nanostructure, fluorinated alkyl silanes were employed as low-surface-energy materials, PDMS was used for its heat-durability and wear resistance, and ETDA was used to strengthen the adhesion between the coating and textile. The obtained surfaces showed excellent water repellency, with a water contact angle (WCA) greater than 175° and a sliding angle (SA) of 4°. Furthermore, the coating retained excellent durability and remarkable superhydrophobicity for oil/water separation, abrasion resistance, ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation stability, chemical stability, self-cleaning, and antifouling under various harsh environments.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is a multidimensional health problem. Up to now, little evidence has been found concerning its impact on quality of life and foot health. Evaluation tools and prevention and treatment strategies must be reported. This study aimed to map the literature on the impact of this side effect on the wellbeing and foot health of people with breast cancer and to describe their main assessment strategies and complementary therapies. Methods: A scoping review was carried out while following the PRISMA-ScR and Arksey and O’Malley guidelines. Different databases (Cochrane Plus, Scopus, Web of Science, and Pubmed) were used. A total of 221 results were identified. Sixteen articles were included. Results: The thematic analysis obtained the following categories: the impact of peripheral neuropathy on quality of life and foot health, complementary therapies as a path for new strategies, and the need for clinicians and researchers to get involved in researching this side effect. Conclusions: Peripheral neuropathy has a negative impact on people’s quality of life. Implications for foot health and maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle have not been previously reported. Complementary therapies are recommended by scientific evidence, highlighting exercise. However, there is a need to develop more research that will help to incorporate them into evidence-based practice.

Ultraviolet-induced photodissociation and photo-isomerization of the three most stable conformers (SSC, GAC, and AAT) of glycolic acid are investigated in a low-temperature solid argon matrix using FTIR spectroscopy and employing laser radiation with wavelengths of 212 nm, 226 nm, and 230 nm. The present work broadens the wavelength range of photochemical studies of glycolic acid, thus extending the understanding of the overall photochemistry of the compound. The proposed kinetic model for the photodissociation of glycolic acid proceeds from the lowest energy conformer (SSC). The model suggests that ultraviolet light induces isomerization only between the SSC and GAC conformers and between the SSC and AAT conformers. The relative reaction rate coefficients are reported for all proposed reactions. These results suggest that the direct photodissociation of GAC and AAT conformer does not occur in an argon matrix. The main photodissociation channel via the SSC conformer produces formaldehyde–water complexes. The proposed photodissociation mechanism emphasizes that the conformers’ relative abundancies can significantly affect the photodissociation rate of the molecule. For example, in the case of high relative GAC and AAT concentrations, the ultraviolet photodissociation of glycolic acid requires the proceeding photo-isomerization of GAC and AAT to SSC.

The long-term variability of lacustrine dynamics is influenced by hydro-climatological factors that affect the depth and spatial extent of water bodies. The primary objective of this study is to delineate lake area extent, utilizing a machine learning approach, and to examine the impact of these hydro-climatological factors on lake dynamics. In situ and remote sensing observations were employed to identify the predominant explanatory pathways for assessing the fluctuations in lake area. The Great Salt Lake (GSL) and Lake Chad (LC) were chosen as study sites due to their semi-arid regional settings, enabling the testing of the proposed approach. The random forest (RF) supervised classification algorithm was applied to estimate the lake area extent using Landsat imagery that was acquired between 1999 and 2021. The long-term lake dynamics were evaluated using remotely sensed evapotranspiration data that were derived from MODIS, precipitation data that were sourced from CHIRPS, and in situ water level measurements. The findings revealed a marked decline in the GSL area extent, exceeding 50% between 1999 and 2021, whereas LC exhibited greater fluctuations with a comparatively lower decrease in its area extent, which was approximately 30% during the same period. The framework that is presented in this study demonstrates the reliability of remote sensing data and machine learning methodologies for monitoring lacustrine dynamics. Furthermore, it provides valuable insights for decision makers and water resource managers in assessing the temporal variability of lake dynamics.
