  • The continuous increase in the penetration rate of renewable energy has posed severe challenges to the flexibility of power systems, especially in coastal and island areas where local power supply is insufficient while electricity demand keeps growing. Focusing on the regional water–energy nexus system (WENS), this paper fully taps into the flexibility potential of seawater desalination plants (SWDPs) as adjustable loads, and proposes a bi-level optimal dispatch model. First, the operational characteristics of reverse osmosis (RO) seawater desalination loads are analyzed, and an operational model encompassing water intake equipment, high-pressure pumps, clear water tanks and product water tanks is established. Second, a dispatch framework for the regional WENS incorporating SWDP is designed, on the basis of which a bi-level optimal dispatch model is constructed: the upper-level model takes maximizing wind power accommodation and minimizing wind power output fluctuation as the objectives, so as to determine the wind power output and the charging/discharging strategy of supercapacitors; constrained by the decisions made by the upper-level model, the lower-level model comprehensively takes into account the operation cost of thermal power units (TPUs), the wind curtailment penalty cost of the system, the operation cost of energy storage systems and the operation cost of SWDP, and thus establishes an optimization model with the goal of minimizing the comprehensive operation cost of the system. Finally, a comparative analysis is carried out under different scenarios. The results show that compared with the optimal scheduling scheme in which the seawater desalination load does not participate in regulation, the proposed method can reduce the wind curtailment rate by 43.71%, the energy consumption cost of the seawater desalination load by 50.98%, and the total system operation cost by 22.51%, thus providing a feasible approach for the collaborative optimization of water–energy systems in coastal areas.

  • To evaluate the respective contributions of the crumb rubber (CR) particle effect (PE) and the CR–asphalt interaction effect (IE) to the high-temperature rheological performance of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA), a CR filtration approach was designed to physically separate CR particles from CRMA. Fluorescence microscopy (FM), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) tests, and gray relational analysis (GRA) were conducted on CRMA binders with different CR particle sizes and contents before and after filtration. The results indicate that the retained CR ratio (Rcr) increased with the increasing CR particle size and content, and coarser CR and higher CR contents generally increased G* and decreased δ, indicating enhanced high-temperature deformation resistance and recoverable deformation capacity of CRMA. After filtration, G* decreased markedly, whereas δ increased, and the quantified PE and IE results further indicate that the enhanced high-temperature rheological performance is dominated by PE, with IE providing an additional contribution, particularly at higher CR contents. Moreover, Rcr correlated positively with G* and negatively with δ, and GRA suggested that CR content acts as the primary factor affecting high-temperature performance, while CR particle size serves as a secondary factor. Overall, this study provides practical guidance for optimizing CRMA design and supports improved asphalt service performance.

  • Metasurfaces provide a compact and powerful means of tailoring electromagnetic wavefronts through spatially varying phase manipulation. This review presents a unified, mechanism-centered perspective on phase control in metasurfaces, tracing their evolution from static designs to actively reconfigurable and space–time-modulated platforms. Beginning with the theoretical basis of generalized Snell’s law, phase-control strategies are categorized into resonance-based, PB phase, and propagation-phase mechanisms, with emphasis on their underlying physics, bandwidth, efficiency, and polarization characteristics. These static approaches are then extended to active metasurfaces that enable post-fabrication reconfiguration through liquid-crystal tuning, electro-optic, phase-change materials, and mechanical deformation. Beyond quasi-static tuning, space–time modulation is introduced as a distinct paradigm that exploits temporal phase gradients to achieve frequency conversion, nonreciprocity, and waveform synthesis. By organizing diverse implementations around their physical phase-control mechanisms and experimentally reported performance trends, this review provides practical guidance for selecting metasurface architectures across frequency regimes and application requirements.

The objective was to evaluate the impact of a 3-month comprehensive rehabilitation program on functional outcomes and caregiver burden in a 73-year-old male with end-stage Parkinson’s disease (PD) following pallidotomy. Baseline evaluation included cardiorespiratory, digestive, and neuromusculoskeletal assessments, complemented by a multidomain geriatric assessment: activities of daily living (Barthel Index), cognition (MoCA), nutrition (MNA), mental health (GDS, UCLA Loneliness Scale), sarcopenia (AWGS criteria), frailty (Clinical Frailty Scale), fatigue (FSS), mobility (De Morton Mobility Index), fall risk (Morse Fall Scale), and caregiver burden (Zarit Burden Interview). The patient then underwent a structured 3-month rehabilitation program consisting of strengthening and flexibility training, cardiopulmonary endurance exercise, functional task practice, and psychological and nutritional counseling, with monthly evaluations. At baseline, the patient presented with generalized rigidity, fatigue, low cardiorespiratory endurance, total ADL dependence, malnutrition, sarcopenia, frailty, loneliness, and high caregiver burden, but intact cognition and mood. After rehabilitation, he achieved short distance walking, improved appetite and weight gain, and reduced scores in Zarit Burden, Fatigue Severity Scale, and MNA. Functional independence (Barthel Index) and respiratory capacity (single-breath count) improved, while frailty and sarcopenia remained stable without progression. In advanced PD, comprehensive rehabilitation can yield meaningful gains in mobility, nutrition, and functional independence while alleviating caregiver burden. Frailty and sarcopenia remain strongly associated with disease progression and highlight the need for sustained multidisciplinary care for both patients and caregivers.

  • Background/Objectives: This study examined associations between maternal misperception and information-seeking opportunities, behaviors, and sources among Japanese mothers of preschool children. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among mothers registered with a nationwide research panel. Mothers of children aged 3–5 years were included because, in Japan, this period follows the last early-childhood health checkup at age 3, after which caregivers are required to monitor child growth independently. In total, 1358 mothers were analyzed. Child anthropometric data were reported by mothers with reference to the Maternal and Child Health Handbook or childcare records. These measurements were originally obtained during routine health checkups conducted by healthcare professionals or childcare staff. Body mass index z-scores were categorized as high, middle, or low, and maternal perception as accurate, overestimated, or underestimated. Information-seeking behaviors were assessed using study-specific items informed by prior literature and reviewed by experts to ensure content and face validity. Health literacy was measured using the validated 12-item Japanese Health Literacy Scale, which has demonstrated reliability and validity in previous studies. Multinomial logistic regression was used. Results: Among children with high body size, 150/188 (80.8%) of mothers underestimated body size; among those with low body size, 20/35 (57.1%) overestimated it. In multivariable analyses, use of healthcare providers as an information source was statistically associated with maternal overestimation of child body size. Conclusions: Maternal misperception was common across body size categories. Further research is needed to determine whether support in interpreting objective growth indicators is associated with improved perception accuracy.

  • Background: Fibrotic remodelling of the lamina cribrosa (LC) is a defining pathological feature of glaucomatous optic neuropathy and contributes to progressive optic nerve head deformation and axonal vulnerability. LC cells from glaucomatous donors exhibit a myofibroblast-like phenotype characterised by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) production, a process associated with chronic cellular stress. cAMP responsive element-binding protein 3-like 1 (CREB3L1) is an endoplasmic reticulum–resident transcription factor implicated in stress-responsive regulation of collagen synthesis and matrix homeostasis. The role of CREB3L1 in glaucomatous LC cells, however, remains poorly defined. Methods: Primary human LC cells derived from donors with confirmed glaucoma (GLC; n = 3) and age-matched non-glaucomatous controls (NLC; n = 3) were examined. CREB3L1 expression was assessed at the mRNA and protein levels using quantitative RT-PCR and Western immunoblotting. The functional effects of CREB3L1 suppression were evaluated using siRNA-mediated knockdown in GLC cells, followed by analysis of ECM gene transcription (α-smooth muscle actin, collagen type I alpha 1, fibronectin) and cellular metabolic activity using an MTS assay. Results: CREB3L1 mRNA and protein expression were significantly elevated in GLC cells compared with NLC cells. siRNA-mediated knockdown of CREB3L1 effectively reduced its expression in GLC cells and was associated with significant suppression of profibrotic ECM gene transcription. In addition, CREB3L1 knockdown resulted in a marked reduction in cellular metabolic activity in glaucomatous LC cells. Conclusions: These findings identify CREB3L1 as a regulator of ECM-associated gene expression and cellular behaviour in glaucomatous lamina cribrosa cells. While preliminary, the data suggest that CREB3L1 may contribute to pathological fibrotic remodelling at the optic nerve head. Further mechanistic and in vivo studies will be required to determine whether modulation of CREB3L1-mediated pathways represents a viable therapeutic strategy in glaucoma.

  • The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is a promising strategy for reducing emissions and promoting sustainable mobility. The increasing adoption of EVs has created a demand for efficient and sustainable charging infrastructure. The integration of rooftop solar-powered EV charging stations into distribution networks is a promising solution for reducing carbon emissions and improving grid efficiency. This integration also introduces challenges, such as power quality issues, grid instability, and the impact of environmental factors on solar generation. This study proposes a novel system that integrates a smart control algorithm for a central battery management system (CBMS) with advanced bidirectional DC-DC converters for optimised power distribution. Unlike existing systems that focus on individual components, this study combines real-time environmental monitoring with adaptive power management algorithms to handle variations in generation owing to solar irradiance, temperature, and shading, and ensure maximum power harvesting. This study also presents the role of the DC-to-DC converter integrated with a smart charging control and CBMS in smart grid-enabled EV charging station. The proposed system was validated using MATLAB 2025b Simulink simulations. This study demonstrates an improvement in overall grid stability and highlights the potential of DC-DC converter technologies for smart grid applications and decarbonisation efforts.

  • Linear alkylbenzene (LAB) is the main raw material used to make biodegradable detergents, and its production process is based on aromatic alkylation. HY zeolites that have undergone controlled dealumination and desilication have led industrial standards amongst solid acid catalysts because of their controllable acidity and hierarchical pore structure. Coke formation in such systems can assume a dual role, which is dependent on its condition. Though the over-deposition is known to cause deactivation by blocking the micropores, Bronsted acid-site masking, and diffusion collapse, the low-level deposition could also be done to increase the monoalkylate selectivity by the pore mouth catalysis, steric modulation, and selective suppression of secondary alkylation pathways. The critical review is done on the structural-kinetic interaction that determines the coke evolution in HY-based catalysts. In order to moderate the acid-site density and enhance hydrothermal stability, dealumination (Si/Al optimization of about 2.5 to 30–100) occurs, but to reduce deep-pore coke formation, desilication (interconnected mesopores) is created. The bimodal porosity and regulated acidity are found to be synergistic, as hierarchical HY zeolites produced through successive cycles of steam and alkaline treatments not only show LAB selectivity in excess of 90% but also exhibit much longer catalyst lifetimes. Quantitative research on the beneficial coke regime revealed that it was composed of about 36 wt% hydrogen-rich species, which were localized at the pore mouths, hence enhancing monoalkylation selectivity by 15–40%. Beyond a critical transition window (e.g., 8–12 wt.%), coke formation to condensed polyaromatic and graphitic products leads to fast deactivated coke formation, which is due to percolation limits and transport-controlled kinetics. More advanced techniques of characterization of the coke, e.g., temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO), 27Al MAAS NMR, and UV-Raman spectroscopy, indicate how the coke is changed to highly structured graphitic deposits of high oxidation activation energy. Activity recovery of 85–98% is obtained in regeneration processes, including controlled oxidative calcination, microwave-based and plasma-based processes, and thermal management protocols, and it would be determined by the chemistry of the coke, its spatial distribution, and the regeneration protocols. This paper has developed a mechanistic coke control system by cross-tuning the acidity and development of an effective pore network, which led to a sustainable aromatic alkylation reaction with minimal activity loss, high selectivity, and long life.
