MDPI Launches the Michele Parrinello Award for Pioneering Contributions in Computational Physical Science

MDPI is delighted to announce the establishment of the Michele Parrinello Award. Named in honor of Professor Michele Parrinello, the award celebrates his exceptional contributions and his profound impact on the field of computational physical science research.

The award will be presented biennially to distinguished scientists who have made outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of computational physical science—spanning physics, chemistry, and materials science.

About Professor Michele Parrinello

"Do not be afraid of new things. I see it many times when we discuss a new thing that young people are scared to go against the mainstream a little bit, thinking what is going to happen to me and so on. Be confident that what you do is meaningful, and do not be afraid, do not listen too much to what other people have to say.”

——Professor Michele Parrinello

Born in Messina in 1945, he received his degree from the University of Bologna and is currently affiliated with the Italian Institute of Technology. Professor Parrinello is known for his many technical innovations in the field of atomistic simulations and for a wealth of interdisciplinary applications ranging from materials science to chemistry and biology. Together with Roberto Car, he introduced ab initio molecular dynamics, also known as the Car–Parrinello method, marking the beginning of a new era both in the area of electronic structure calculations and in molecular dynamics simulations. He is also known for the Parrinello–Rahman method, which allows crystalline phase transitions to be studied by molecular dynamics. More recently, he has introduced metadynamics for the study of rare events and the calculation of free energies.

For his work, he has been awarded many prizes and honorary degrees. He is a member of numerous academies and learned societies, including the German Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, the British Royal Society, and the Italian Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, which is the major academy in his home country of Italy.

Award Committee

The award committee will be chaired by Professor Xin-Gao Gong, a computational condensed matter physicist, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and professor at the Department of Physics, Fudan University. Professor Xin-Gao Gong will lead a panel of several senior experts in the field to oversee the evaluation and selection process.

The Institute for Computational Physical Sciences at Fudan University (Shanghai, China), led by Professor Xin-Gao Gong, will serve as the supporting institute for the award.

"We hope the Michele Parrinello Award will recognize scientists who have made significant contributions to the field of computational condensed matter physics and at the same time set a benchmark for the younger generation, providing clear direction for their pursuit—this is precisely the original intention behind establishing the award."

——Professor Xin-Gao Gong

The first edition of the award was officially launched on 1 November 2025. Nominations will be accepted before the end of March 2026. For further details, please visit mparrinelloaward.org.

19 November 2025
World AMR Awareness Week—“Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future”, 18–24 November 2025

World AMR Awareness Day 2025 draws attention to the urgent global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)—one of the greatest threats to public health, food security, and sustainable development. This year’s theme, “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future”, calls on the international community to take immediate, coordinated, and sustained action to preserve the effectiveness of life-saving antimicrobials. AMR affects every region of the world and every aspect of modern medicine, from surgery and cancer therapy to animal health and agriculture. Without effective antibiotics, common infections and minor injuries could once again become deadly.

To address this growing crisis, selected MDPI journals provide leading platforms for advancing research on antimicrobial resistance, surveillance, stewardship, and innovative therapeutic strategies. These include studies on new antibiotics, resistance mechanisms, diagnostic tools, infection control, and global policy frameworks. Through curated articles, Special Issues, and reprints, these journals foster cross-disciplinary collaboration among researchers, clinicians, and policymakers to combat AMR through innovation, education, and evidence-based practice.

World AMR Awareness Day serves as a powerful reminder that tackling antimicrobial resistance requires shared responsibility, sustained investment in research and innovation, and collective global action to secure a healthier, more resilient future for all.

World Children’s Day, 20 November 2025

World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide and improve children’s welfare. 20 November 1959 is an important date as it is when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. Additionally, on the same date in 1989, the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

From the moment the sun rises, children wake up to a world shaped by choices they did not make. However, every child, everywhere, also wakes up with rights, including the right to be protected, to learn, and to have their voice heard. It is time to listen to children to understand what their lives are like and how their rights are present, missing, or pursued every day.

To commemorate this day, we invite you to explore a curation of insightful articles, journals, and Special Issues across various fields, including pediatric public health, childhood education, child psychology, and child development. By sharing these findings, we hope to advocate, promote, and celebrate children’s rights, and translate these findings into dialogues and actions that will build a better world for children.

“World Children’s Day serves as a crucial reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard and prioritize the health, rights, and well-being of children. As a researcher, it underscores the need to address the unique health challenges children face through evidence-based research. On a broader scale, it emphasizes the importance of creating a world where all children can thrive, free from poverty, violence, and neglect”.

Name: Dr. Diego Gomez-Baya
Affiliation:
University of Huelva, Spain
“Programs to foster positive youth development should be active and participatory, allowing adolescents to take ownership of their own development. Likewise, measures that encourage greater civic and environmental engagement are equally necessary, hand in hand with the promotion of personal character strengths”.
Please read the full interview here.
Name: Dr. Graham Connelly
Affiliation:
University of Strathclyde, UK
“We need to protect children from being harmed by conflict and provide the best care for children affected by strife, dislocation, famine and poverty. We need to fund international children’s agencies better, and yes, of course hold them to account for the funds they receive. There are very good examples, worldwide, of ways of consulting with children that are not tokenistic. I’d like to see these being expanded”.

World Children’s Day | Interview with Dr. Anna Di Sessa—Section Board Member of the Journal of Clinical Medicine

World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international co-operation, awareness among children worldwide, and improvements in their welfare. This year, under the theme “Listen to the Future, Stand up for Children’s Rights”, we were honored to interview Dr. Anna Di Sessa, a Section Board Member of the Journal of Clinical Medicine (JCM, ISSN: 2077-0383).

Name: Dr. Anna Di Sessa
Affiliation: Department of Woman, Child, and General and Specialized Surgery, University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Italy
Interests: pediatric nephrology; pediatric urology; pediatric endocrinology and metabolism; general pediatrics; pediatric fatty liver disease

The following is a short interview with Dr. Anna Di Sessa:

1. Could you introduce yourself and share a brief overview of your research field?
I am a pediatrician with a specialized focus on endocrinology and nephrology, currently practicing at the Pediatric Clinic of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. In January 2020, I earned a PhD in translational medicine from the same institution. Since 2011, my research has primarily concentrated on childhood obesity and its cardiometabolic consequences, particularly focusing on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and kidney damage.

2. What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your research career?
One of the key challenges I have faced was bridging the gap between research findings and their practical application in clinical settings. In pediatrics, while new treatments or interventions may demonstrate promising results in clinical trials, translating these findings into routine practice often encounters significant barriers. These include limitations in healthcare infrastructure, cost considerations, and resistance to adopting new practices among clinicians.
Additionally, conducting research with vulnerable populations, such as children, introduces ethical complexities. Ensuring that studies adhere to high ethical standards while protecting participants’ well-being and privacy requires meticulous planning and ongoing ethical reflection.

3. What does World Children’s Day mean to you, both as a researcher and as a member of the global community?
World Children’s Day serves as a crucial reminder of our collective responsibility to safeguard and prioritize the health, rights, and well-being of children. As a researcher, it underscores the need to address the unique health challenges children face through evidence-based research. On a broader scale, it emphasizes the importance of creating a world where all children can thrive, free from poverty, violence, and neglect. It is both a call to advance research focused on child health and to advocate for policies that protect and empower children globally.

4. Looking ahead, what changes or advancements would you most like to see in the next 10 years to ensure a safer, healthier, and more equitable future for all children?
In the next decade, I hope to see substantial progress in pediatric care, particularly through the integration of personalized medicine. By tailoring treatments to a child’s unique genetic profile, environmental factors, and lifestyle, personalized medicine has the potential to substantially enhance the precision and efficacy of interventions, particularly for complex conditions such as rare diseases, cancers, and chronic illnesses. The broader adoption of telemedicine and AI-driven diagnostic tools could also improve access to care, especially in underserved regions. Furthermore, there should be a heightened focus on pediatric mental health, alongside the development of global policies that ensure universal access to quality education, clean water, nutrition, and protection from harm. These advancements hold the promise of fostering a safer, healthier, and more equitable future for children worldwide.

5. As a Section Board Member of JCM, could you share your experience with MDPI?
As a Section Board Member of JCM, my experience with MDPI has been highly productive and rewarding. MDPI offers a robust platform for open access publishing, ensuring a transparent and efficient peer-review process. Working with MDPI has allowed me to contribute to the strategic direction of the journal, particularly in advancing clinical medicine while maintaining rigorous research standards. The editorial support and global reach provided by MDPI have facilitated the rapid dissemination of research, especially in specialized fields such as pediatrics. Their commitment to innovation and quality has significantly enhanced the visibility and impact of JCM.

Journal of Clinical Medicine | 2025 Academic Editorial Board Meeting at the EASD 2025 Held on 16 September 2025

The Journal of Clinical Medicine (JCM, ISSN: 2077-0383) held its Academic Editorial Board meeting at the EASD 2025 on 16 September 2025 in Vienna, Austria. Six Editorial Board Members attended. As a premier event for staying abreast of the latest advancements in diabetes research and practice, EASD 2025 provided an ideal platform for this engagement. During the conference, we met our Section Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Didac Mauricio, and other scholars with whom we have cooperated for many years. We look forward to reconnecting with you at future international conferences to explore opportunities for deeper collaboration. We invite you to revisit the wonderful highlights of this event.

At our booth, we received positive feedback from scholars, who expressed satisfaction with their collaboration with us and a willingness to continue working with us. We are pleased to share some photos taken with scholars at our booth.

At the Academic Editorial Board meeting, we provided a brief overview of JCM’s basic information and played a journal-produced promotional video. This video highlighted JCM’s scope, academic achievements, and role in the academic publishing landscape. The following key highlights were discussed in the meeting: (1) To increase the Impact Factor of the journal, Members suggested revising the scope of the journal and its Sections and conducting an analysis of the Impact Factor “per Section”. (2) New proposals and suggestions for peer review models were discussed. (3) Members felt we should share the metrics of the journal’s rejection rate and the evolution of objective metrics that are proof of quality (indexing in major databases, IFs, CiteScore values, and the outreach of publications). (4) It was suggested that we should advertise the awards we are granting to researchers. (5) Numerous suggestions were proposed regarding external collaborations, such as partnering with major institutions, exploring conference sponsorships and collaborations with academic societies, and deepening cooperation with young scholars. (6) Views were exchanged on the use of AI tools in research, and we shared some information about MDPI's initiatives in this area. (7) Members expressed interest in our proposal to “assist them in organizing their events,” and we will explore possibilities for expanding our collaboration model in the future.
