Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major and growing global health threat associated with an increased risk of issues in many aspects of medical practice. In 2021, an estimated 4.71 million deaths were associated with, and 1.14 million deaths were attributable to, AMR pathogens. Trends in mortality associated with AMR have changed over the last 30 years, with an increment in people > 70 years.

By 2050, it is estimated that 8.22 million deaths associated with AMR could occur globally, and approximately 1.9 million people will die from AMR-attributable causes. Comprehension of the AMR crisis is a complex issue because many molecular mechanisms are involved. The AMR phenomenon should be addressed by means of a One Health approach, encompassing human, and environmental aspects. Additionally, for humans, the global challenge to combat AMR requires coordinated efforts at the international level in several critical areas, such as systematic implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) strategies and antimicrobial and diagnostic stewardship programs, guaranteed access to diagnostics and treatment for the entire population, effective surveillance systems to identify new and emerging AMR trends, and investment in research to develop new therapies and innovative diagnostics. In addition, novel alternative strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance have been proposed, including phage therapy and those targeting specific virulence features and metabolic pathways involved in the pathogenesis of microorganisms, among others. Indeed, bacterial genomics by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) has undergone a paradigm shift in the study of microbial pathogens, leading to a deeper comprehension of the mechanisms and spread of AMR. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML)-driven tools in genomics for AMR shows promising potential to rapidly identify resistance genes, predict resistance phenotypes, and optimize treatment strategies based on genomic data.

In this Special Issue, we plan to collect original research articles, short communications, and review articles on all aspects of AMR and efforts to combat the AMR crisis.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
