“Parametric Design and Mechanical Characterization of a Selective Laser Sintering Additively Manufactured Biomimetic Ribbed Dome Inspired by the Chorion of Lepidopteran Eggs” Cover Story: This paper presents the parametric design and mechanical characterization of a biomimetic ribbed dome inspired by the chorion of Lepidopteran eggs. By mimicking the natural microstructure, a parametric algorithm was developed to generate a ribbed dome design, fabricated using selective laser sintering (SLS). The biomimetic structure exhibits superior mechanical properties, including reduced snap-through behavior under compressive loads, achieved by optimizing geometric features such as ring curvature. These findings demonstrate the potential for biomimetic principles in enhancing structural integrity and performance in engineering and design. |

“How the Structure and Wettability Properties of Morpho peleides Butterfly Wings Can Be a Source of Inspiration” Cover Story: Natural surfaces have intricate topographies, giving them unique wettability behaviors. However, correlating topography and wettability remains challenging. In Morpho peleides, micro- and nanostructures are crucial for survival. This paper analyzes the wetting properties of Morpho peleides wings, examining the role of topography and surface chemistry. Structures responsible for wettability are studied via scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. Wettability is characterized through static contact and sliding angle measurements. To clarify roughness contributions, the models of Extrand and Rahmawan et al. are applied. Understanding these mechanisms offers insights into bioinspired surfaces with self-cleaning, anti-icing, and anti-corrosive properties. |

“Decoding Brain Signals in a Neuromorphic Framework for a Personalized Adaptive Control of Human Prosthetics” Cover Story: A novel neuromorphic framework of a BMI system for prosthetics control via decoding Electro Cortico-Graphic (ECoG) brain signals was proposed. It includes a three-dimensional spike-timing neural network (3D-SNN) module for spatio-temporal feature extraction from brain signals and an online trainable recurrent reservoir module (echo state network (ESN)) for desired Motor Control Decoding (MCD). The decoder is able to adapt continuously in real time in supervised or unsupervised mode. The proposed approach was tested on several experimental data sets acquired from a tetraplegic person. Future implementation on a neuromorphic hardware platform that is smaller in size and significantly less power consuming is also discussed. |

“The Right Tool for the Job: A Review of Insect Mouthparts as a Tool Kit for Biomimetic Studies” Cover Story: Few lineages have had a greater impact on the field of biomimicry than insects. Insects feed on a diverse array of nutritive solid and liquid foods, supported by specialized mouthpart adaptations that facilitate efficient feeding. Here, we review the literature on how insect mouthparts have contributed to the field of biomimicry. We frame our review in the context of the different feeding strategies employed by insects, including the biting–chewing strategy that involves mandibulate mouthparts and the piercing-sucking and non-piercing–sucking strategies employed by insects with haustellate mouthparts. Insect mouthparts offer an extensive “tool kit” from which to draw inspiration for improved or novel human-engineered analogs. |

“µ-Raman Spectroscopic Temperature Dependence Cover Story: Phospholipids in water are the primary elements of cell membranes and, through their chemical and physical structures, enable cells to interact with other biological molecules (i.e., proteins and vitamins) and perform their biological functions. Due to their amphiphilic structure, phospholipids form biomimetic membranes, which are useful for studying cellular interactions and drug delivery. In this study, the biomimetic system DPhPC in deuterium solutions is investigated using µ-Raman spectroscopy across a broad temperature range—from −181.15 °C to 22.15 °C. Raman data reveal phase transitions as a function of temperature. These findings enhance our understanding of the role of artificial biomimetic lipids within complex phospholipid membranes and offer valuable insights for optimizing their use in biosensing applications. |

“A Lightweight Bioinspired SMA-Based Grasping Mechanism for Flapping Wing MAVs” Cover Story: Birds use perching as a means to land and take off from different surfaces. This study presents a bioinspired perching mechanism to improve landing and takeoff behavior for a flapping-wing micro aerial vehicle. Mimicking the human hand, the lightweight gripper uses compliant claws actuated by shapememory alloy (SMA) springs that simulate muscle movement. The SMA-based system enables fast, bidirectional actuation using short electrical pulses. Optimized for cylindrical grasping, the 50 g gripper integrates SMA springs within its phalanges to reduce size and mass. Tests show a 16 N grasping force, enabling perching, grasping, and carrying tasks. The compact, adaptable design offers a simpler, more efficient alternative to traditional actuators for small-scale MAVs. |

The conference will take “Bioinorganic Chemistry from the Perspective of Life and Health” as its theme. Distinguished experts and scholars from home and abroad will be invited to participate. MDPI will be attending the 52nd International Conference on Micro and Nano Engineering (MNE 2026) as an exhibitor. The conference will be held from 21 to 24 September 2026. We welcome researchers from different backgrounds to visit and share their latest ideas with us.
MNE is a major annual international conference, devoted to micro and nano engineering, held in a European country every September. The conference brings together engineers and scientists from across the world to discuss recent progress and future trends in the fabrication, manufacturing, operation and application of micro and nano-structures and devices. Applications in electronics, magnetics, photonics, electromechanics, environment and life sciences are also discussed. MNE 2026 will be the 52nd conference in a series that was started in Cambridge in 1975 and which was held most recently in Turin (2021), Leuven (2022), Berlin (2023), Montpellier (2024) and Southampton (2025). In September 2026, MNE will take place in Interlaken, Switzerland – an idyllic lakeside town nestled between the lakes of Thun and Brienz and framed by the majestic snow-capped peaks of the infamous Bernese Alps. It is estimated that the conference will attract 600-700 participants.

Biomimetics Receives an Increased CiteScore of 6.2
We are pleased to share that Biomimetics (ISSN 2313-7673) has received an increased CiteScore of 6.2 in June 2026. The CiteScore ranks the journal 122 out of 342 titles (Q2) in the “Biomedical Engineering” category, an impressive achievement for a journal running in Volume 11.

The current CiteScore measure the average number of citations within a journal over a four-year window (2022–2025). The Scopus database provides a comprehensive suite of metrics that support informed publishing strategies, research evaluation, and enable benchmarking of journal performance.

Biomimetics Receives an Updated Impact Factor of 4.2
We are pleased to share that Biomimetics (ISSN 2313-7673) was awarded an increased Impact Factor of 4.2 in the 2025 Journal Citation Reports™ released by Clarivate™ in June 2026. Biomimetics ranks in Q1 (36 among 178 titles) in the “Engineering, Multidisciplinary” category.
The 2025 Journal Impact Factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations received in 2025 of all publications in the journal from 2023 and 2024 by the total number of citable publications from those same years.
