Distinguished Colleagues in the Global Engineering and AI Communities.
As the wave of artificial intelligence (AI) sweeps across the global technological landscape, the field of engineering is undergoing a profound paradigm shift—moving from traditional experience-driven approaches to a dual-driven model by data and intelligence, and advancing from “approximate solutions” for complex problems to “precision optimization.” Amid this transformation, we rejoice in the innovative vitality that AI algorithms have injected into engineering design: from reshaping product forms through generative design to reducing industrial losses via predictive maintenance. Yet, we also confront practical challenges in technology implementation: How can AI theories adapt to the dynamic complexity of engineering scenarios? How can the uniqueness of engineering problems fuel the iterative advancement of AI methods? And how should we balance innovation efficiency with ethical responsibility, as well as short-term benefits with sustainable development amid technological breakthroughs? It is with a commitment to exploring these core questions that AI for Engineering formally launches today.
As an international open-access journal, we have always anchored our core positioning in “connecting theory and practice to empower engineering innovation across all domains.” Our scope covers all engineering branches, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering. We welcome original research that uncovers methodological breakthroughs in the application of AI to engineering design, intelligent manufacturing, and system control; we also embrace review articles that synthesize domain progress and short communications that share cutting-edge developments. We focus not only on the engineering implementation of hard technologies such as topology optimization and reinforcement learning but also value reflective content on long-term development issues like ethical considerations and Explainable AI (XAI). We uphold academic inclusivity with “no page limit”—because in-depth theoretical deductions and detailed experimental validations require sufficient space to elaborate. Furthermore, we adhere strictly to the academic principle of “reproducible research”: each paper must provide complete methodological details, and we support the deposit of software, data, and other electronic files as supplementary materials. We firmly believe that open knowledge sharing and rigorous academic standards are the twin engines driving progress at the intersection of AI and engineering.
Our original aspiration in founding this journal extends far beyond “publishing papers”: We envision it as a “two-way bridge”—enabling AI researchers to engage with the real needs of engineering practice, preventing technology from being “detached from theory” and equipping engineers with intelligent tools to address pain points, breaking free from the constraints of “experience dependence.” We hope it will serve as a “cross-disciplinary platform”—where practical cases of supply chain efficiency optimization, algorithmic innovations reshaping design logic, and discussions on the social impacts of AI-driven engineering can all spark intellectual exchanges. More importantly, we aim for it to stand as a “banner of responsibility”—uniting the strength of colleagues worldwide to collectively tackle the “tough challenges” in engineering, ensuring that AI becomes not merely a tool for improving efficiency, but an “engineering enabler” that serves human well-being and builds a sustainable industrial future.
On behalf of the Editorial Board of AI for Engineering, I now extend a sincere invitation to colleagues in the global engineering and AI communities: We look forward to authors entrusting us with their most innovative research outcomes and most insightful practical reflections, making this journal a key milestone in your academic journey. We also encourage readers to actively participate in discussions and offer suggestions, joining us in safeguarding academic quality and expanding the boundaries of research.
The story of AI for Engineering has only just begun. Every step of its future growth will rely on your support and collaboration. Let us take this journal as our starting point, embark on a new journey of AI-empowered engineering, and work together to write a new chapter where intelligence and craftsmanship converge.
