Primary and Hospital Care aims to support the community of primary and hospital health care providers by offering a platform for exchange across clinical practice, education, and health service perspectives. Prior to its inclusion in MDPI’s portfolio, the journal featured a range of article types, with a strong representation of opinion pieces and commentaries relative to peer-reviewed research articles.
Originally published by Editores Medicorum Helveticorum (EMH), Primary and Hospital Care is now positioned within MDPI’s medical portfolio as a scholarly forum for contributions in primary and hospital health care. In line with this mission, the journal seeks to publish rigorously conducted research, reviews, guidelines, and case reports that address relevant questions and support informed decision making. A similar transition from EMH to MDPI was also undertaken for Cardiovascular Medicine, which released its first issue under MDPI in December 2025 [1] and has since established a regular publication stream in 2026.
The positioning of Primary and Hospital Care is aligned with the widely accepted definition of primary health care. The World Health Organization defines Primary Health Care [2] as “a whole-of-society approach to health that aims at ensuring the highest possible level of health and well-being and their equitable distribution by focusing on people’s needs and as early as possible along the continuum from health promotion and disease prevention to treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care, and as close as feasible to people’s everyday environment”. Within this framework, primary care sits at the intersection of clinical practice, population health, and health systems. Primary and Hospital Care remains dedicated to bridging these domains by providing a forum where scientific rigor and practical relevance meet.
Moving forward, Primary and Hospital Care will continue to foster exchange within the community while strengthening the visibility and proportion of its peer-reviewed scholarly content. In doing so, the journal reaffirms its commitment to the community with robust, relevant, and actionable knowledge.
