Software development processes present a number of challenges due to the impact of uncertainty. In this context, the problem of deciding which requirements will be implemented in the next k releases is known as the Software Release Planning Problem. This article presents a novel fuzzy model for Software Release Planning that accounts for the penetration and exploitation of uncertainty related to the effort required to implement each requirement. The solution is a Consonant Family of Plans, which allows for the determination of confidence measures regarding the release in which each requirement will be implemented. The model is tested on an example instance, and a “what-if” analysis is conducted, demonstrating how the solution responds to updates in parameters and the arrival of new data on work completed. This information constitutes a flexible prescriptive analysis that supports decision-making, and the paper shows how the solution responds as the context changes. Also, an initial computational study is carried out. The results show that the solution’s usefulness is maintained over time as new information becomes available, which poses new challenges and encourages further research. Full article

Background: Although the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has the potential to prevent most HPV-related cancers, its uptake in Texas remains lower than the national uptake and the Healthy People 2030’s goal of 80% completion among adolescents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises healthcare professionals (HCPs) to assess immunization status at every clinical encounter and to routinely integrate these standards into their practice. Socioeconomic characteristics of individuals influence HPV vaccination; however, the role of HCPs’ individual characteristics and the ZIP-code-level income of their practice location in the routine assessment of HPV vaccination is unknown. Methods: Using data from a survey of HCPs conducted by MD Anderson in Texas in the year 2021, we examined the association between HCPs’ individual characteristics and the ZIP-code-level income of their practice location in HCPs’ routine assessment of HPV vaccination. Results: This study included 1283 HCPs working in Texas. Overall, 37.6% of HCPs reported routinely assessing HPV vaccination status. Compared with HCPs whose practice was based in lower-income communities (median household income below $56,500), those who practiced in higher-income communities had 32% lower odds of routinely assessing HPV vaccination status (aOR: 0.68; 95% CI: 0.48–0.96). Compared to HCPs without prior formal training on HPV vaccination, the odds of HCPs assessing HPV vaccination status routinely were 393% higher (aOR: 4.93; 95% CI: 3.21–7.58) among HCPs who had formally trained less than two years ago, 123% higher (aOR: 2.23; 95% CI: 1.52–3.28) among HCPs formally trained between two and five years ago, and 92% (aOR: 1.92; 95% CI: 1.28–2.87) higher among HCPs formally trained more than five years ago. Conclusions: Our findings underscore the need for targeted interventions and education to promote routine HPV vaccination communication and status assessment among HCPs in higher-income communities in Texas. These efforts should include approaches to address vaccine hesitancy and introduce reminders and system-level prompts. Future research should investigate the contextual and organizational factors that contribute to these income-related differences to better inform implementation strategies. Full article

The development of novel high-performance materials is a key driver of technological progress in biomedicine. To date, polymeric materials have represented one of the most significant advances in addressing a broad range of challenges. Owing to their versatility and tunable properties, polymers have found countless applications, including in highly demanding biomedical fields, particularly when the availability of donor tissue is limited and transplantation is not always a viable option. To overcome these limitations, increasing research efforts have been devoted to the development of tailor-made biocompatible materials capable of restoring physiological functions. Within this context, the present research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of innovative aromatic polyesters containing polar comonomeric units to enhance their hydrophilicity. The reference homopolymer, poly(pentamethylene naphthalate), was chemically modified by incorporating different molar amounts of dimethyl 5-sulfoisophthalate subunits, with the aim of improving surface wettability and biological integration. In addition to high thermal stability and processability, the resulting materials exhibited good optical transparency, with low color saturation and a faint bluish hue, making them potentially suitable for biomedical applications, including the treatment of ocular tissues. Finally, biocompatibility was preliminarily assessed through in vitro cytotoxicity tests. Overall, these findings may lay the foundation for developing a new generation of materials capable of providing advanced solutions for biomedical applications. Full article

The production of cultured meat will require large quantities of cell culture medium, presenting challenges related to high costs and limited sustainability of both protein-based components and other ingredients of the basal medium. To date, most research has focused on substituting and optimizing protein-based medium components, leading to significant progress in reducing costs associated with growth factors and serum albumin. However, the basal medium—containing amino acids, vitamins, carbon sources, and microelements—is equally essential. While some efforts have been made to optimize its composition, the environmental impact of using chemically fully defined mixtures remains considerable, and cost reductions are challenging. In this study, we introduce a novel approach to basal medium production by utilizing a mixture of partially hydrolyzed plant and yeast biomass. Our results demonstrate that hydrolysate-based basal medium (HBBM) performs comparably to chemically fully defined basal medium during proliferation and differentiation of bovine satellite cells. Furthermore, a comparative life cycle assessment was performed to explore the environmental impacts of replacing chemically fully defined medium with HBBM. The analysis showed potential reduction in environmental impacts, highlighting the relevance of basal medium formulation as a key element to influence ecological sustainability. Full article

Macrobenthic seaweeds are key species in temperate and boreal nearshore rocky ecosystems, and their interspecific interactions profoundly affect the species composition, spatial distribution and dynamic succession of the community. This paper systematically reviews the mechanisms of interspecific competition and facilitative effects among macrobenthic seaweeds. We also examine their environmental regulation and impacts on community phase transitions. Competition mainly centers on three major resources: light, space and nutrients. It manifests as an asymmetric hierarchical structure, in which canopy-forming species exert a disproportionate repressive effect on lower algal layers through light competition. Facilitative effects are realized through several mechanisms. These include canopy shading to mitigate heat stress and water loss, physical structure building to create complex habitats, and nutrient retention with chemical microenvironment regulation. Moreover, the relative strengths of facilitation and competition shift systematically across environmental stress gradients. Multi-trophic level regulation further shapes community diversity maintenance mechanisms through the suppression of dominant species by vegetative predators and the cascading effect of top predators on vegetative predators. In the context of global change, physiological asymmetries driven by oceanic heat waves are tilting the competitive balance in favor of opportunistic turf algae. These algae form a lock-in state through the triple positive feedbacks: physical barriers, biogeochemical deterioration, and chemosensory exclusion. This significantly decreases the resilience of algal field recovery. Tropical coral-macroalgae phase transition is highly consistent with the degradation of temperate algal fields in terms of driving logic. They follow the law of coupling resource competition imbalance, downward regulatory relaxation, and positive feedback lock-up. This paper suggests several priorities for future research. Studies should focus on the nonlinear response of multifactor interaction, the quantitative correlation between key functional traits and community resilience, and the establishment of a cross-ecosystem comparison framework. These efforts will provide theoretical support for predicting and adaptively managing offshore ecosystems under global change. Full article

Seismic pier-top pounding in high-speed railway bridges transfers short-duration girder-restraint contact forces into bridge piers, coupling local contact damage with global vibration and possible base yielding. This critical review evaluates how evidence and modelling strategies can be transferred from local contact mechanics to pier response and, ultimately, to whole-bridge seismic demand. The literature is synthesized across experimental and refined numerical characterization, reduced-order contact–structure modelling, response-equivalent-pulse construction, and nonlinear whole-bridge analysis. A qualitative evidence-confidence grading is introduced to distinguish the strength and transferability of the available evidence based on study independence, evidence type, and configuration similarity. The primary scope is high-speed railway bridges, while the underlying contact–structure modelling principles are transferable to conventional railway and highway bridges with comparable pier-top restraints, subject to bridge-specific calibration. Conventional spring-dashpot models are computationally efficient but sensitive to contact stiffness, damping, restitution, and damage assumptions, whereas refined finite-element models resolve local response at substantially greater computational cost. Static, impulse-equivalent, and prescribed pulse representations can reduce analysis effort, but agreement in force or impulse alone does not ensure equivalence in pier displacement, base moment, plastic rotation, or residual demand. Demand-oriented pulses can reproduce selected component-level responses within a calibrated applicability domain, while response-triggered loading remains a conditional system-level reduction requiring reliable event logic, state updating, and independent benchmark validation. Future research should prioritize realistic restraint tests, identifiable parameter ranges, multi-demand validation, uncertainty quantification and damage-updatable repeated-impact models. These advances can provide a mechanics-based basis for performance-oriented restraint assessment, while practical design application requires consistency with code-based seismic restraint provisions and post-earthquake track-system serviceability criteria. Wildlife tourism can harm both the species in question and the local communities if not properly implemented. Nevertheless, a comprehensive and effective approach to evaluate the potential of community-based ecotourism (CBET), especially wildlife ecotourism, is lacking. We aimed to assess the potential of utilizing the endemic Philippine colugo (Cynocephalus volans) as a focal species for CBET in Bilar and Anda, Bohol and Ormoc City, Leyte, by understanding the perspectives of tourists, residents, and the local government units (LGU). To gather their perspectives, we conducted mixed-method interviews and online surveys from January to May 2026. Despite low familiarity with the species, potential tourists showed high interest in seeing colugos in their natural habitats, with most of them confirming to participate in the CBET in the next five years. Residents showed high interest in the CBET for economic and conservation purposes, while LGUs varied in their views on the use of the species for tourism, assessment of local community capacity, and the support they can provide. Anda had the highest CBET potential based on local community capacity, LGU support, and tourist preference. We determined the CBET operational model, features of the offer, and optimal pricing points. The proposed CBET initiative has the potential to enhance public awareness, stimulate research efforts, and promote monitoring of the species, which may positively contribute to the conservation of the Philippine colugo. Intuitive response and multi-objective control are well-known features of Finite Control Set Predictive Torque Control (FCSPTC). However, its implementation difficulty is a result of limitations such as high computations, strong model parameter dependency in control, and time-consuming tuning efforts for weighting factors in a cost function. Particularly, when FCSPTC is applied to a Multi-Level Inverter (MLI)-supplied motor drive, computation complexity is predominant. The proposed research work in this paper offers a new FCSPTC to dual two-level VSIs supplied for an Open Winding Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (OWPMSM) drive. The contributions of the proposed FCSPTC for the OWPMSM drive are the following. (i) Simplicity: There are fewer operational steps in control and limited evaluations with five prediction voltage vectors (VVs) out of 19, and a flux weighting-factor-less design is used by adopting a voltage cost function. (ii) Robustness: There is less parameter dependency in control through the involvement of stator resistance only. (iii) Switching frequency reduction: The application of an optimal switching state from the redundant switching states of optimal VVs is used to generate fewer switching state transitions, where the process is independent from the switching frequency weighting factor. According to theoretical and experimental findings, it is evident that the proposed FCSPTC technique operates effectively without the weighting factor and provides the above-stated features, resulting in an optimal response in flux, torque and current, switching frequency reduction, and low-complexity operation. The proficiency of the proposed FCSPTC technique is experimentally verified by comparing it with existing control schemes. Full article

Riparian ecosystems are among the most impacted by human activities despite their great importance as refuges for biodiversity and providers of environmental services. The Nazas River is one of the most important wetlands in north-central Mexico. This river boosted the development of La Comarca Lagunera, a region of great economic importance to the country. However, regional development has led to the deterioration of this vital socio-ecosystem and its services. Despite these efforts, no studies have integrated multiple indicators to comprehensively assess the overall health of the basin. Instead, previous research has largely relied on isolated indicators. For this reason, this study prioritized an initial health assessment of the Nazas River, considering three main indicators: a biological indicator based on the fish community, a physicochemical indicator of water quality, and a physical indicator of the condition of the territory surrounding the river. The study found a marked gradient in overall health, ranging from the least degraded in the upper reaches (0.76 Ramos River and 0.68 Sextín River) of the river to the most degraded in the lower reaches (0.63 Lower Nazas), and highlighted the Peñón Blanco River in the middle section as a priority area for conservation and a possible biodiversity refuge due the Comprehensive Health Assessment 0.80. Social Participation for Health and Health Care Workers’ Self-Management: Lessons from Socialist Yugoslavia for Contemporary Health Systems—A Systematic Review

Background/Objectives: Contemporary health systems continue to face persistent challenges in financing, equity, and governance, particularly under conditions of limited resources, workforce shortages, and demographic pressures. While the World Health Organization calls for strengthening social participation to achieve universal health coverage, evidence suggests that such participation often remains largely symbolic. Existing global examples of social participation in health are limited either by their short duration of implementation or by their limited scope. In contrast, the experience of former Yugoslavia (1945–1991) represents a distinctive case. In the early post-war period, health reforms were directed towards the development of a decentralised, self-managed health system that emphasised universal coverage, participatory governance, social solidarity, and local autonomy. The trajectory of these reforms was further shaped by global economic and political pressures, including neoliberal trends, international debt, and the oil crises, which constrained resources and exposed systemic vulnerabilities. The so-called Yugoslav Experiment may offer an alternative to existing market-oriented and, at times, inefficient health systems. This review aims to synthesise evidence on the governance, financing, organisation, and outcomes of Yugoslavia’s self-managed health system and to evaluate its relevance to contemporary debates on health system resilience, decentralisation, participatory governance, equity, and sustainability. It examines power relations, stakeholder interests, and resource allocation, and assesses the lessons that the Yugoslav experience offers for contemporary debates on participatory governance and the sustainability of healthcare systems, while identifying areas of convergence, debate, and gaps in the existing scholarship. Methods: We conducted a systematic narrative review of peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, conference papers, and commentaries published in English or Bosnian–Croatian–Montenegrin–Serbian that covered the period 1945–1991. Scopus, PubMed, and EBSCOhost (including CINAHL Plus with full text, Medline and PsychInfo) were searched on 19 January 2026. Studies were included if they addressed health system reform, self-management, governance, financing, or institutional continuity. Contextual studies of selected services—primary care, mental health, reproductive health, and vaccination—were included only if they illuminated reform trajectories. Data synthesis focused on reform phases, institutional transformations, financing arrangements, governance mechanisms, and power relations, with particular attention to continuity, path dependence, and critical junctures. Given the heterogeneous and predominantly historical, analytical, and policy-oriented nature of the literature, we did not apply conventional study-design-specific risk-of-bias tools. Instead, we used an overarching framework to classify and contextualise the included evidence according to five dimensions: source type, nature of contribution, evidentiary role, temporal context, and health-system domain. The protocol was not registered. The study was financed by the Provincial Secretariat for Higher Education and Scientific Research, Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Republic of Serbia. Results: The database searches yielded 265 records, of which 193 were selected for title and abstract screening after removing 72 duplicates. At this stage, 133 publications were excluded because they did not meet the eligibility criteria and 60 publications were selected for full-text review. Application of the predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria resulted in 22 eligible publications. An additional 18 studies were identified through citation chaining and targeted Google Scholar searches. Twenty-two publications were coded as primary studies, directly examining health system reform, governance, or self-management, while 18 were classified as contextual studies addressing specialty areas. The analysis identified key reforms that followed the social participation, i.e., ‘self-management’, approach, which expanded primary care, preventive services, and local participation. It revealed institutional changes, as well as the role of power and health financing in health reforms aimed at strengthening social participation. Nonetheless, challenges—including bureaucratic and managerial elitism, unequal professional authority, resource scarcity, and tensions between market-oriented policies and social solidarity—were amplified by global economic forces and neoliberal trends, ultimately contributing to the system’s collapse by the late 1980s. This review was limited by its search strategy, the exclusion of grey literature, the potential omission or inaccessibility of relevant studies, and its focus on selected aspects of health reform, namely post-war recovery and self-management. Conclusions: The Yugoslav experience illustrates both the promise and the fragility of socially oriented, participatory health systems, demonstrating how international political alignments and global economic pressures can profoundly shape domestic health reform trajectories. Lessons from this case remain relevant to contemporary efforts to strengthen social participation for universal health coverage through designing sustainable, resilient, equitable, and socially accountable health systems under complex global conditions. The forced displacement of Hmong communities following the Secret War in Laos in 1975 transformed the conditions under which Hmong language and cultural knowledge were transmitted from one generation to the next. Subsequent migration and resettlement dispersed Hmong communities across the globe, particularly in the United States. Although research has documented language shift, revitalization efforts, intergenerational learning, and educational responses, less attention has been given to the individuals who sustain Hmong language continuity and the conditions that make this continuity possible. Drawing on a portraiture study of six Hmong cultural practitioners in California and Minnesota, this article asks: Who sustains Hmong language continuity after displacement, and what makes continuity possible? Across portrait narratives, practitioners sustained Hmong language and cultural knowledge through everyday cultural labor, relationships, mentorship, ceremonial practice, documentation, interpretation, and adaptation. Their pathways into cultural practice differed, yet their work also created conditions through which others could access, learn, participate in, and carry cultural knowledge forward. This work is conceptualized as condition-making, the ongoing and deliberate cultural labor through which practitioners keep Hmong language and cultural knowledge available and meaningful beyond isolated opportunities for cultural participation. By shifting attention from opportunities to conditions, this article broadens understandings of intergenerational language continuity in diasporic communities, expands recognition of who can be considered a Hmong language and cultural practitioner, and demonstrates how culturally grounded reconstruction can create pathways for future practitioners. Background: Smartphones and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) are increasingly integrated into everyday life, influencing information access, digital interaction, and cognitive tasks. While problematic smartphone use and cognitive offloading are well studied, GenAI introduces newer forms of cognitive delegation that warrant comparison. Objective: This narrative review examines convergences and divergences between smartphone- and GenAI-mediated cognitive processes, focusing on cognitive offloading, attention, reliance, self-regulation, and human agency. Review approach: Interdisciplinary literature from psychology, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and education was narratively reviewed and compared. The aim was to integrate relevant evidence rather than provide a systematic or exhaustive synthesis. Synthesis: Smartphones primarily support connectivity, information access, and digitally mediated attention, whereas GenAI extends technological assistance toward reasoning, synthesis, and content generation. Despite important differences, both may redistribute cognitive effort between individuals and digital systems, with potential implications for self-regulation and human agency. Conclusions: Smartphones and GenAI are distinct technologies with partly overlapping but also technology-specific effects. Further empirical research is needed to determine which forms of cognitive offloading and reliance are shared across technologies and their implications for human agency. Full article

Shade coffee agroecosystems are recognized as biodiversity-friendly systems that make an important contribution to biodiversity conservation in tropical landscapes. This study synthesized the scientific evidence on biodiversity associated with Mexican coffee agroecosystems through a systematic review of literature published between 1990 and 2026. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searches in ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Web of Science, Scopus, and SciELO yielded 1424 records, of which 126 met the inclusion criteria. The selected studies were further classified according to research axes, methodological approaches, production-system comparisons, and ecosystem functions. Research efforts were strongly concentrated in Veracruz and Chiapas, while several coffee-producing regions remained poorly represented. Arthropods were the most studied group, followed by plants and trees, while mammals and birds were equally represented; fungi and herpetofauna received comparatively less attention. Scientific output increased compared with the early years of the study period but showed considerable temporal variation, particularly during the most recent decade. Despite these advances, relevant geographic and taxonomic gaps persist, particularly for fungi, soil microorganisms, and herpetofauna. The evidence indicates that shade coffee agroecosystems serve as valuable reservoirs of biodiversity and support ecosystem services, ecological connectivity, and landscape conservation. Future studies should focus on underrepresented regions and taxa and incorporate functional diversity, ecological interactions, and landscape-scale approaches to strengthen biodiversity conservation and sustainable management in Mexican coffee-growing landscapes. The growing prevalence of obesity worldwide has been attributed not only to behavioral and genetic factors but also to chronic exposure to environmental chemicals known as obesogens. This review synthesizes current evidence on three underexamined classes of emerging environmental obesogens: per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs), and tire-derived organic pollutants (TDOPs), with particular focus on their metabolic impacts and potential synergistic effects. These contaminants are widely detected in drinking water, food products and food-contact materials, and epidemiological evidence increasingly links them to dysregulation of lipid metabolism, impairment of glucose homeostasis, and obesity-related outcomes. These contaminants may disproportionately affect marginalized communities due to synergistic toxicity, systemic exposure disparities, and greater economic vulnerabilities. The review discusses shared exposure pathways, plausible molecular mechanisms, and heightened human vulnerability. Critical knowledge gaps are identified, including limited data on emerging PFAS, nanoplastics and their additives, chronic co-exposures, and analytical challenges in tracking human exposure. By integrating evidence across these contaminant classes, the review highlights the need for coordinated research efforts to better characterize the cumulative obesogenic burden of emerging environmental pollutants. Hosting capacity (HC) has become a key concept in planning and operating modern distribution networks to sustainably integrate distributed energy resources (DERs), including photovoltaic systems, wind generation, battery energy storage, and electric vehicles. However, the literature shows variation in HC definitions, assessment assumptions, limiting criteria, and reporting practices, complicating cross-study comparison and utility implementation. This paper examines HC from four interconnected perspectives: limiting factors and performance indices, assessment methods, enhancement strategies, and standardization efforts. The review examines the influence of voltage constraints, thermal loading, power quality, protection coordination, network topology, system inertia, regulatory requirements, and load diversity on HC. It compares major assessment approaches, including deterministic, stochastic, time-series, optimization-based, iterative, hybrid, data-driven, and artificial intelligence-based methods, highlighting their strengths, limitations, and suitable applications. The paper also reviews HC enhancement techniques for sustainable network capacity utilization, including network reinforcement, smart inverter control, demand-side flexibility, energy storage, and coordinated multi-layer control. Particular attention is given to emerging HC standardization and the gaps between formal standards and the research frontier, especially in probabilistic, dynamic, and real-time assessment. Overall, HC depends on binding network constraints, operating conditions, assumptions, and controls, while methodological and reporting gaps limit comparability and sustainable DER integration.
