Cover Story: Pyrolysis is a sustainable and efficient process for converting biomass into fuels, chemicals, fertilizers, catalysts, and sorption materials. This review highlights ongoing research in biomass pyrolysis over the past decade, examining the operating conditions of slow, intermediate, fast, and flash pyrolysis, each defined by distinct heating rates. Four groups of biomass pyrolysis reactors—pneumatic bed, gravity, stationary bed, and mechanical—are discussed. This review also covers recent advances in pyrolysis technologies that improve efficiency, yield, and product quality, supporting sustainable energy production and waste management. In addition, the composition and yields of the pyrolysis products are reviewed, along with a techno-economic analysis of biomass pyrolysis and co-pyrolysis with other materials.
