Energies 2022 Travel Award (800 CHF)
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that Energies will be awarding two Travel Awards to junior scientists. The applications will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee consisting of senior scholars from the Energies Editorial Board.
This award provides financial support to the winners to attend an international conference in the field of energy and related research to be held in 2022, in order to hold a presentation, present a poster, or both.
Candidates’ Requirements:
– Postdoctoral fellows or PhD students.
– Plans to attend an international conference in 2022 (oral presentation or poster).
Required Application Documents:
– Information of the conference that the applicant is planning to attend and the abstract that will be submitted.
– Curriculum Vitae and list of publications.
– Justification letter describing the focus of the research (max. 800 words).
– Letter of recommendation from the supervisor, research director, or department head, which also confirms the applicant’s status as a postdoctoral fellow/PhD student.
The winners (two awardees: one postdoctoral fellow and one Ph.D. student) will each be awarded 800 CHF and a certificate.
Please submit your applications for the Energies 2022 Travel Award online by 15 December 2021. Prizes will be awarded at the end of March 2022 and announced on the Energies website.

Energies 2021 Outstanding Reviewer Award (500 CHF)
Dear colleagues,
On behalf of the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Enrico Sciubba, we wish to acknowledge our reviewers who so generously give their time to review the papers submitted to Energies by presenting an award to the reviewers who have demonstrated their dedication, professionalism, and timeliness in reviewing manuscripts for Energies.
What are the pre-requisites to be eligible for this award?
- All of the reviewers for Energies in 2021 will be automatically included.
Select Criteria:
- Number of review reports (only first review reports are considered);
- Review quality based on the rating given in SuSy;
- Review speed.
What will the winners receive?
There will be five winners this year, and each will receive the following:
- 500 Swiss francs;
- An opportunity to publish a paper free of charge in 2022;
- A certificate.

- The winners will be announced at the end of March in 2022 on the journal website.

Energies 2021 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award (500 CHF)
Dear Colleagues,
The journal Energies (MDPI, Switzerland, ISSN 1996-1073, mdpi.com/journal/energies) is inviting applications for the Energies 2021 Best Ph.D. Thesis Award. This prize will be awarded to a Ph.D. student who is about to graduate or participate in the graduation thesis. The applications will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee consisting of senior scholars from the Energies Editorial Board.
Eligibility Requirements:
- The candidate must be a Ph.D. student who is going to graduate or participate in graduation thesis defenses;
- The Ph.D. thesis must be original work;
- The Ph.D. thesis must be defended between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021;
- The Ph.D. thesis must be the final version, and approved and signed by the Thesis Committee;
- Applicants are required to submit the following documents:
a. An executive summary of the Ph.D. thesis in English, of around 3000 words;
b. A letter from Ph.D. supervisor recommending the candidate for consideration for this award;
c. The candidate’s CV, including a list of publications connected with the thesis;
d. An electronic copy of the Ph.D. thesis;
e. A scanned copy of the Ph.D. diploma (or certificate of studying at a school or research institute as a Ph.D. student going to graduate or participate in graduation thesis defenses).
Selection Criteria:
- Quality of resume and publications;
- Relevance of the candidate and research description;
- Novelty of the candidate’s Ph.D. thesis;
- Strength of the recommendation letter;
- Anticipated academic potential;
- Originality and impact of the research.
Prizes:
– Bonus (500 CHF);
– Certificate;
– Offer to publish a featured paper in Energies with the article processing charge (APC) waived before the end of 2022.

Energies 2021 Young Investigator Award in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles (2,000 CHF)
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that Energies is now inviting nominations for the Energies 2021 Young Investigator Award in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles. This prize will be given to one young investigator in recognition of her/his excellence in the field of electric and hybrid vehicles. All nominations will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee led by the Section Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Rui Xiong.
The Prize:
− 2000 CHF (Swiss Francs);
− Option to publish one paper free of charge in Energies after peer review before 31 December 2022;
− An engraved plaque.
Eligibility and Requirements:
− Should have received their PhD no more than 10 years prior to 31 December 2020; or candidates of males should be born after 1 January 1985 and females should be born after 1 January 1983;
− Should have produced ground-breaking research and a significant contribution to the advancement of electric and hybrid vehicles;
− Candidates should be nominated by senior scientists.

Energies 2020 Best Paper Awards
Energies 2020 Best Paper Awards Announcement
Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the “Energies 2020 Best Paper Awards” for research and review articles published in Energies from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020. Six reviews and nine research articles will receive an award each. The papers will be selected after thorough evaluation by the journal Award Committee led by the EiC, Prof. Dr. Enrico Sciubba, and the winners will be announced on 20 March 2022.
Eligibility for the Awards:
– Papers published in Energies from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020;
– Open to all career levels;
– Both regular and Special Issue submissions will be considered.
Selection Criteria:
The papers will be selected by the journal Award Committee according to the following criteria (data source: Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics)):
– Scientific merit and broad impact;
– Relevance to the journal’s field;
– Originality of the research objectives and/or the ideas presented;
– Creativity of the study design or uniqueness of the approaches and concepts;
– Clarity of presentation;
– Citation and download rates in 2021.
Prizes:
Each winner (corresponding author) will receive a certificate, and a chance to publish a paper free of charge in Energies in 2022. Additionally, each winner will receive a prize based on the award class:
- First place (one review paper and one research paper): 1000 CHF each;
- Second place (two review papers and three research papers): 600 CHF each;
- Third place (three review papers and five research papers): 400 CHF
The winners will be announced on the journal website on 20 March 2022.

Energies 2019–2020 Best Cover Paper Award
Dear Colleagues,
Authors are increasingly interested in having their papers published as a cover story in Energies. In total, 48 cover stories were published in 2019 and 2020. These cover stories reported important research results, or innovative methods, and presented impressive images. To reward the authors who published important research results in Energies, we are announcing the Energies 2019–2020 Best Cover Paper Award.
The criteria that will be considered for selection are as follows:
– Importance or innovation of the research;
– Open to all career levels;
– Quality of the cover image.

The voting line is open to all of Energies’ followers, subscribers, and other scholars in the field of scientific research, technology development, engineering, and the studies in policy and management. The vote is open from 9 July 2021 to 15 September 2021.
There will be four winners (two selected from 2019 cover stories, two selected from 2020 cover stories), and each will receive 500 CHF. We will randomly select the votes of 10 participants and, to show our appreciation of your involvement in the voting process, the 10 selected participants will each receive a 50 CHF voucher. The winners will be announced on the journal website by the end of November 2021.

Energies 2020 Travel Awards

We are pleased to announce the winners of the Energies Travel Awards for 2020.
Travel awards were granted to Mr. Felix Utama Kosasih, a Ph.D. student in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge; and to Dr. Alberto Sánchez González, Assistant Professor at the Department of Thermal and Fluid Engineering, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
Mr. Kosasih’s research focuses on using analytical electron microscopy and machine-learning-based data analysis techniques to study the properties, stability, and upscaling of perovskite solar cells and modules. Dr. González’s research focuses on concentrating solar power systems. Each awardee will receive 800 Swiss Francs to attend an international conference in 2020.
Mr. Felix Utama Kosasih will present his work entitled “Sodium Diffusion at P1 Scribe Lines in Perovskite Solar Modules” at the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS) Fall Meeting 2020, which will be held on 14 September, 2020 in Warsaw, Poland.
Dr. Alberto Sánchez González will present his work entitled “FluxSPT: Tool for Heliostat Field Aiming and Flux Mapping in Solar Power Tower Plants” at the 26th SolarPACES Conference, which will be held on 29 September, 2020 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.

Energies 2019 Young Investigator Award
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the winner of the 2019 Energies Young Investigator Award is Dr. Xiaosong Hu.
Dr. Hu is currently a professor at Department of Automotive Engineering, Chongqing University, China. He has provided salient contributions to sustainable energy and mobility solutions, particularly in domains of modelling and control of power/propulsion systems of clean energy electrified vehicles in sustainable transportation. Major contributions distinguishing him include: (1) he innovatively proposed the concept of Li-ion battery model usefulness and related state estimation, health prediction, and optimal charging algorithms, substantially increasing the precision and robustness of battery management in a complicated vehicular environment; (2) he has systematically studied control and optimization approaches for (plug-in) hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs/HEVs), innovatively addressing the deep-rooted challenge of jointly rapid optimization of vehicular configuration, component sizing, and energy management. Dr. Hu is productive and influential in the filed of sustainable energy. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Hu on receiving this award and for his outstanding achievements.
As the awardee, Dr. Hu will receive an honorarium of 2000 CHF and an engraved plaque.

Travel Awards were granted to Ms. Patricia Royo Gutierrez, a PhD student in Engineering and Architecture School—University of Zaragoza; and to Dr. Federico Bella, post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Applied Science and Technology, Polytechnic University of Turin.
Ms. Gutierrez’s research focuses on the design and sustainable integration of innovative systems for industrial and energy processes, thermal storage systems and waste heat recovery in energy-intensive industry, and phase change materials. Dr. Bella’s research focuses on materials chemistry for energy conversion and storage devices. Each Awardee will receive 800 Swiss Francs to attend an international conference in 2019.
Ms. Patricia Royo Gutierrez will present her work entitled “Thermal Performance Investigation on Latent Heat Thermal Storage for Waste Heat Recovery from a High Temperature Gas Flow in Energy-Intensive Industries” at the “The International Conference on Innovative Applied Energy”, which will be held on 14 March 2019 in Oxford, UK.
Dr. Federico Bella will present his work entitled “Aqueous Solar Cells: Challenges in Electrodes and Electrolytes Design” at the “70th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry” which will be held on 4 August 2019 in Durban, South Africa.

Travel Awards were granted to Ms. Lihui Gao, PhD student in the Chemical Engineering department of the China University of Mining and Technology and visiting scholar at the Energy Engineering Department of Pennsylvania State University; and to Dr. Joonho Jeon, post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Minnesota. Ms. Gao focuses on the research of sustainable fuels and materials for environmental applications. Dr Jeon’s research focuses on the characterization of nanoparticle distributions in direct injection gasoline engines. Each Awardee will receive 800 Swiss Francs to attend an international conference in 2018:
Ms. Lihui Gao will present her work entitled “In Situ Upgrading of Pyrolysis Biofuels and Heterogeneous Biochars by Mineral Incorporation into Biomass: Chemical vs. Mechanical Catalyst Mechanisms” at the “Fall 2018 National American Chemical Society Meeting”, which will be held on 19 August 2018 in Boston, MA, USA.
Dr. Joonho Jeon will present his work entitled “Characterization of Nanoparticle Distributions with in-Cylinder Flame Behaviors in a Gasoline Direct Injection Engine” at the “37th International Symposium on Combustion” which will be held on 29 July 2018 in Dublin, Ireland.

Energies 2017 Young Investigator Award
Dear readers of Energies,
We are pleased to announce that the winner of 2017 Energies Young Investigator Award is Dr. Praveen Linga. Dr. Praveen Linga is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the National University of Singapore. Dr. Linga’s works on both fundamental and applied aspects of research on clathrate hydrates. In a short span of 6+ years of independent research, he has built and developed state-of-the-art research facilities for macro, micro and molecular level investigations pertaining to his research programme on gas (clathrate) hydrates. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Praveen Linga for a well-deserved prize.
As the awardee, Dr. Linga will receive an honorarium of 2000 CHF, an offer to publish a paper free of charge without a fixed deadline in Energies, and an engraved plaque.
