Cover Story: Berry crops are recognized for their high nutritional value and economic relevance, but their quality and sustainability are strongly influenced by pre- and postharvest factors. This review critically analyzes the main agronomic, physiological, and technological determinants affecting berry quality, shelf life, and safety from field production to postharvest handling. Special emphasis is placed on innovative approaches, including precision agriculture, non-destructive technologies, and emerging postharvest treatments. In addition, the valorization of berry by-products is discussed as a key strategy to enhance sustainability and circularity in berry production systems. By integrating current knowledge and identifying research gaps, this review provides a comprehensive framework to support innovation and sustainable development in berry crop production.
