Afforestation can mitigate the export of water, sediment, and dissolved or adsorbed contaminants to river systems, but identifying effective intervention sites requires accounting for multiple flow-related criteria and their spatial interactions. This paper presents a multi-criteria heuristic approach that extends CAMF (Cellular Automata-based Heuristic for Minimizing Flow), originally designed to select cells from a rasterized landscape for interventions that minimize sediment yield at target sites. We integrated the Distance-to-Ideal-Point (DIST2IP) algorithm in CAMF, enabling the selection of cells where intervention can minimize two or more flows simultaneously. The multi-criteria CAMF was applied ex post to the radioactively contaminated Niida river catchment, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, to identify 1000 cells within decontaminated zones where the then immediate afforestation would have maximally reduced both sediment and residual 137Cs export. The 1000 best cells selected by DIST2IP, representing 4% of the decontaminated cells, would have reduced sediment export by 22% and 137Cs export by 6%. Selected cells are within the union of cells identified by the two single-criteria optimizations and are predominantly close to water bodies, confirming that blocking flow paths before they connect to the river system is most effective. This study examines urban green infrastructure (UGI) branding as a governance practice shaped by institutional homogenization and strategic responses within China’s multi-level policy framework. Against the backdrop of global sustainability agendas, UGI branding is conceptualized as a policy-oriented, symbolically embedded instrument for communicating cities’ commitments to green development and climate resilience. Using an institutional “identity–label–image” framework, integrated with policy diffusion theory and multi-center regional development models, we systematically analyze historical brand-label data from 27 core cities in the Yangtze River Delta. Our findings reveal three key patterns: (1) brand diffusion follows dual pathways of mandatory and imitative homogenization, with evolutionary rhythms tied to five-year planning cycles, generating discernible “policy waves”; (2) within polycentric regional structures, core cities act as institutional “interpreters” and benchmarks, while peripheral cities pursue imitation-driven differentiation, reflecting complex dynamics of collaboration and competition; and (3) urban identities expressed through brand labels progressively align with substantive sustainability transitions, aiming to enhance regional competitiveness and upward recognition. We conclude that UGI branding constitutes a deep-seated mechanism of sustainable urban governance, offering a novel theoretical lens on China’s institutional logic of city branding and providing actionable insights for optimizing collaborative brand governance and integrated green infrastructure planning in urban agglomerations. The Andes serve as natural laboratories where biomes shape faunal communities into mosaics of habitats prone to fragmentation, making protected areas such as the Chimborazo Reserve (RC) critical refuges in the face of climate change. Based on this premise, patterns of biotic specialization and inter-biome faunal connectivity were evaluated through the ordering and co-scaling of family-level taxa in factorial space. A geospatial design was employed, stratifying the area into 400 ha cells, which were distributed across the high-Andean tundra (T), paramo grassland (G), and Andean forest (F) biomes and selected via simple proportional random sampling. A validated database of 2511 occurrences was compiled for the classes reptilia, aves, mammalia, amphibia, and insecta, comprising a total of 48 families, integrating records from global platforms and field surveys. The resulting matrix of 102 sampling cells (across three biomes) with 48 taxonomic families was analyzed using principal component analysis (HJ-biplot), k-means clustering, and bidirectional biclustering. It was found that Cluster 3 reflected a marked ecotone effect and faunal connectivity between F and G, dominated by generalist families with high evolutionary success such as Thraupidae, Tyrannidae, and waterbirds. In contrast, Clusters 1 and 2 revealed structural discontinuities and high biogeographic specialization in response to abiotic stress in the tundra, isolating taxa adapted to extreme conditions (Tropiduridae, Cricetidae, and Thinocoridae). Biclustering confirmed that the heterogeneity of the terrain mitigates climatic severity at the forest edge, acting as a microclimatic refuge for specialized nectar-eaters (Trochilidae) associated with Chuquiraga jussieui. The zoological structure of the RC reflects a distinct and predictable faunal partition that is strongly influenced by the interaction between the altitudinal gradient and microtopography. The coexistence of zones of diffuse transitions that promote biotic connectivity alongside nuclei of maximum specialization and ecological isolation was confirmed, which is essential for planning conservation measures. This article examines how drama in English portrays men who anchor their self-worth to sexual potency and masculine performance, particularly when that confidence faces direct challenge or the quiet pressure of ageing. Through sustained close reading of Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, the analysis traces how characters negotiate pride, vulnerability, and the defence of manhood through dialogue, pacing, and silence. Existing criticism has often approached these moments through historical or ideological lenses; this reading instead attends to the psychological negotiation visible in the text itself. Drawing on established work on gender performance and narrative identity, the article treats masculine pride not as a fixed cultural pattern but as a dramatic act that characters repeat, defend, and sometimes surrender. The theoretical tools serve the text rather than dictate it, allowing the plays to reveal how men construct, protect, and adjust their sense of virility when it is called into question. The findings emerge from careful attention to scene structure, verbal exchange, and the unspoken tensions that shape dramatic portrayal. Full article

Through-going structures are widely distributed in rock masses of underground engineering, and their dip angles act as the core factor affecting the stress field and mechanical response of surrounding rock. To reveal the mechanical mechanism of rock masses containing through-going structures with different dip angles, this study adopts a combined method of theoretical derivation, indoor model testing and numerical simulation. Firstly, a plane strain mechanical model is established to classify Tectonically-induced Stress, Residual Gravitational Stress and engineering-induced stress, and the theoretical formulas for stress components, stress residual coefficient and stress deflection angle are derived. Secondly, rock-like specimens with through-going structures of various dip angles are prepared and biaxial compression tests are carried out to monitor mechanical parameters such as surrounding rock strain and peak strength. Finally, a large-scale numerical model is built by FLAC2D (version 7.0) software to simulate the whole process of stress equilibrium and excavation unloading of rock mass under a normal stress of 20 MPa. Then the data of principal stress, stress components, stress residual coefficient and deflection angle under different dip angles are extracted. The results show that the dip angle of through-going structure exerts a prominent regulatory effect on the rock mass stress field. With the increase of the dip angle, the Tectonically-induced Stress decreases continuously while the Residual Gravitational Stress rises gradually. The variation trend of stress deflection angle is highly consistent with structural dip angle, and the influence of Residual Gravitational Stress on deflection angle is limited. Due to the differences in loading modes and model sizes between indoor tests and numerical simulations, the evolution laws of stress residual coefficient show opposite trends, but both results verify the dominant effect of structural dip angle. Combined with theoretical, experimental and numerical results, the proposed theoretical system can effectively describe the stress evolution law of rock masses with through-going structures, which provides theoretical reference and technical support for the stability analysis of surrounding rock in similar underground engineering. This study presents the development of an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based legal assistant using the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) architecture to provide legal assistance to citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The proposed solution is designed to generate accurate, evidence-based responses to user queries using the regulatory legal acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan as the primary source of information. A legal corpus comprising 101,000 legislative documents and court decisions, with approximately 77 million tokens in Kazakh and Russian, was constructed to support the retrieval component of the system. To identify the most effective semantic retrieval method, three multilingual embedding models—Multilingual-E5-Large, BGE-M3, and KazEmbed-V5—were evaluated for vector search. The experimental results showed retrieval accuracies of 87.6%, 76.8%, and 83.3%, respectively. The GPT-5.4 and Llama-4-Scout-17B-16E-Instruct large language models were used to generate legal reasoning and responses based on documents retrieved through semantic search. The quality of the generated responses was evaluated using two complementary approaches. First, legal experts assessed the factual correctness and legal validity of the answers. Second, automatic evaluation was performed using word-level F1, BLEU, ROUGE, and BERTScore-F1 metrics. Among all evaluated configurations, GPT-5.4 combined with Multilingual-E5-Large achieved the highest overall accuracy (88.5%), whereas Llama-4-Scout-17B-16E-Instruct combined with KazEmbed-V5 achieved an accuracy of 83.6%. Based on the proposed architecture and the selected semantic retrieval and language models, an AI legal assistant was developed and integrated into the “Adal Azamat” legal services platform providing users in Kazakhstan with practical access to AI-assisted legal consultation. Background and Clinical Significance: People with HIV (PWH) experience an elevated risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), driven by chronic immune activation, metabolic toxicities of antiretroviral therapy (ART), and traditional risk factors. Achieving target low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels is frequently impeded by adherence barriers, pharmacokinetic drug interactions, or muscle-related symptoms. Inclisiran is a hepatocyte-targeted small interfering RNA that halts proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 synthesis, providing a long-acting therapeutic alternative. Case Presentation: We present two PWH with severe hypercholesterolemia and elevated cardiovascular risk on stable ART. Case 1 describes a 54-year-old male with a history of myocardial infarction presenting with persistent, refractory hypercholesterolemia on rosuvastatin and ezetimibe (baseline LDL-C 142 mg/dL). Case 2 describes a 58-year-old male with verified statin intolerance and inadequate response to ezetimibe (baseline LDL-C 194 mg/dL). Following subcutaneous inclisiran administration at Day 1 and Day 90, Case 1 achieved an 80.2% LDL-C reduction to 28 mg/dL at Month 6, and Case 2 achieved a 54.6% reduction to 88 mg/dL at Month 6 as monotherapy. Both patients tolerated therapy well, with stable CD4+ counts and sustained virological suppression. Conclusions: These cases illustrate that inclisiran can effectively lower LDL-C levels across primary and secondary prevention settings in PWH facing oral therapy limitations or statin intolerance. Provider-administered dosing every 6 months overcomes adherence challenges, supporting the inclusion of PWH in broader clinical pathways pending ongoing cardiovascular outcome trials. Full article

Acne vulgaris (AV) significantly affects quality of life and is often treated with topical therapies. Gambir, a phytopharmaceutical with catechin as its primary compound, offers an alternative solution for mild-to-moderate AV, acting as an anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent. This study investigates the efficacy of 1% gambir extract gel in treating AV, contributing to the exploration of novel dermatological interventions. The pilot study at the General Hospital of Mohammad Hoesin, Palembang, assessed the impact of a 1% gambir extract gel on individuals with AV. A total of 22 subjects, including those with sensitive skin, were enrolled in the study. Data analysis involved comparing the severity of AV before and after treatment with the gel, as well as skin analysis and dermatological quality of life index before and after treatment. Results indicated significant clinical improvement (p < 0.001) in 77.2% of subjects by week 8. Notably, 83.3% of moderate AV cases improved to mild, and 70% of mild AV cases showed improvement. Erythema and sebum levels decreased, and life quality, assessed by the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), improved in 72.7% of subjects (p < 0.001) by week 8. These findings suggest promising outcomes with 1% gambir extract gel and encourage further research for validation and refinement, emphasizing its potential in managing mild–moderate AV. Full article

Follicular atresia constitutes a major constraint on sow reproductive performance. Aberrant miRNA expression is well documented to promote follicular atresia. However, precise identification of the functional miRNAs responsible for this process remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we integrated multiple transcriptome datasets and identified miR-149, a miRNA located within the quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with litter size in sow. Notably, miR-149 was highly expressed in atretic follicles and ovaries of sow with low litter size. Subsequent in vitro culture of ovarian granulosa cells (GCs) combined with miR-149 overexpression assays revealed that miR-149 significantly promotes the expression of cleaved caspase 3 (c-caspase 3), a marker of apoptosis in ovarian GCs. Mechanistic studies revealed that miR-149 functions as small activating RNA (saRNA) to activate the transcription of Caspase 8. This triggers the death receptor-mediated apoptotic, upregulates the expression of Caspase 3, and ultimately accelerates apoptosis in ovarian GCs. Collectively, these results indicate that miR-149 acts as negative regulator of sow reproduction. This study elucidates the miR-149/Caspase 8/Caspase 3 signaling axis as a novel pathway governing sow fertility, which provides molecular targets for improving reproductive performance in sow. In this study, the hydrogen embrittlement (HE) susceptibility and hydrogen-induced cracking behavior of X70 pipeline steel were investigated in CH4–H2 mixed-gas environments containing 5–20% H2 at a total pressure of 7 MPa. Slow strain rate tensile tests, thermal desorption spectroscopy, fractography, and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) were employed to correlate hydrogen uptake, mechanical degradation, fracture morphology, and crack evolution. The results showed that increasing the hydrogen fraction progressively deteriorated the mechanical performance of X70 pipeline steel, as evidenced by reductions in tensile strength and elongation. This degradation was accompanied by a fracture-mode transition from micro-void coalescence to quasi-cleavage fracture. More importantly, EBSD analysis revealed a hydrogen-content-dependent change in the role of the heterogeneous microstructure. At relatively low hydrogen fractions, fine-grained regions and microstructural heterogeneity acted as effective barriers to hydrogen-induced crack propagation. However, at higher hydrogen fractions, this intrinsic crack-arresting capability was substantially weakened. Newly formed cracks were observed to initiate ahead of pre-existing cracks and propagate preferentially along grain boundaries, with limited local plastic deformation. These findings demonstrate that the increased HE susceptibility of X70 pipeline steel under high-H2 mixed-gas conditions is associated with the progressive loss of the crack-arresting resistance provided by its heterogeneous microstructure. In frequency comparison networks, the optical frequency combs (OFCs) act as accurate frequency sensors designed to translate terahertz optical signals down to radio frequency signals for accurate frequency counting. The number of OFC’s comb modes that beat with clock and transfer lasers during remote frequency comparison is indispensable for the calculation of their frequency difference. In this work, with the assistance of a 1542 nm cavity-stabilized laser at Changping campus, the number of comb modes is locally determined with sufficient uncertainty by stepping the comb’s repetition rate. This approach bypasses the technical challenges of simultaneous operation of optical clocks, OFC and fiber-link noise cancelation during long-distance comparison, providing a reliable prerequisite for remote optical clock comparisons. Root hairs are tubular protrusions of root epidermal cells that expand the root surface area to facilitate water and nutrient uptake. The target of rapamycin (TOR) kinase has been identified as a positive regulator of root hair elongation, and the RHD6-RSL4 bHLH transcriptional cascade is well established as a core module that governs root hair morphogenesis. However, whether TOR signaling acts upstream of the RHD6-RSL4 pathway and how glucose signals are integrated into this transcriptional regulatory network during root hair development remain incompletely understood. In this study, transcriptome profiling combined with pharmacological and genetic functional assays was performed to elucidate the TOR-mediated transcriptional regulatory pathway of root hair elongation in Arabidopsis. Chemical inhibition of TOR triggered genome-wide transcriptional reprogramming in seedling roots, including disruption of auxin and ethylene signal transduction and pronounced downregulation of hundreds of genes related to root hair development. Glucose-activated TOR signaling modulates the expression of root hair-specific (RHS) genes mainly through the core RHD6-RSL4 transcriptional cascade. The transcription of RSL1RSL5 was strongly dependent on functional TOR activity, whereas RHD6 transcript abundance was specifically induced by glucose–TOR signaling under carbon-starvation recovery conditions. Genetic overexpression of either RHD6 or RSL4 partially rescued root hair elongation defects caused by TOR suppression, confirming that the RHD6-RSL4 cascade functions as a critical downstream transcriptional module of glucose–TOR signaling. Collectively, this work establishes a transcriptional framework in which glucose–TOR signals modulate root hair elongation via transcriptional activation of the master bHLH regulators RHD6 and RSL4. Invasive gastropods pose significant risks to ecosystem stability and public health by acting as intermediate hosts for parasites like Fasciola spp. During malacological surveys across Nigeria (2024–2025), populations of a previously unknown lymnaeid snail were discovered in two distinct habitats. Using an integrative taxonomic approach combining morphological examination and COI DNA barcoding, the species was identified as the Neotropical liver fluke snail Galba cubensis. Phylogeographical analysis revealed that Nigerian specimens share a common haplotype widespread in the Americas, Europe, and Asia, indicating a major transcontinental range expansion. While xenomonitoring of four specimens showed no current trematode infections, G. cubensis is a primary intermediate host for Fasciola hepatica. The establishment of this highly adaptable species in West Africa raises urgent ONE HEALTH concerns, including potential parasitic overspill and competition with native snails like Radix natalensis. Freshwater gastropod invasions in Nigeria, cryptic invasions in Africa, and future developments are discussed. The findings of this study emphasize the necessity of dedicated malacological surveys and risk management to address the spread of globally invasive freshwater snails. Full article

We propose a gold-graphene-vanadium dioxide (VO2) hybrid metasurface capable of reversibly switching among three operational modes in the terahertz regime. The device achieves flexible polarization control by combining the insulator-to-metal phase transition of VO2 with the electrical tunability of graphene. Simulation results reveal three distinct behaviors depending on the biasing conditions of the materials. With graphene held at a chemical potential of 0 eV and VO2 in the insulating state, the metasurface acts as a linear-to-linear polarization converter. The polarization conversion ratio (PCR) exceeds 0.9 over the frequency range from 5.5 to 8.6 THz. When the graphene chemical potential is raised to 0.9 eV while VO2 remains insulating, the metasurface switches to linear-to-circular conversion. Notably, the handedness of the outgoing wave depends on the polarization of the incoming signal. Over the 6.45–8.36 THz band, the axial ratio (AR) remains below 3 dB. A third functional state emerges when VO2 switches to its metallic phase. In this state, the device simply operates as a broadband co-polarized reflector, covering the terahertz communication band from 0.1 to 10 THz. This switchable, multifunctional behavior should prove useful for terahertz communications, polarization imaging, and sensing applications. Full article

Background/Objectives: Standard protocols for euglycemic clamp studies involving long-acting insulin formulations typically recommend a dosage range of 0.4~0.6 U/kg for a single dose. This investigation aimed to evaluate the bioequivalence of an insulin degludec (IDeg) biosimilar versus its reference product, while simultaneously analyzing intra-subject variability in pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) metrics at doses of 0.4 U/kg and 0.5 U/kg in healthy Chinese adults. Methods: This randomized, single-dose, crossover euglycemic clamp study involved 52 participants who received either 0.4 U/kg (Group A, n = 26) or 0.5 U/kg (Group B, n = 26) of both formulations. Key outcomes measured included AUCIDeg,0–24h, Cmax,IDeg, and AUCGIR,0–24h. Secondary endpoints encompassed AUC of IDeg or GIR at specified intervals and time-related metrics. Intra-subject variability (intra-CV) was assessed for PK/PD parameters. Results: All subjects completed the study without dropping out. Baseline demographics showed no significant disparities between groups. Bioequivalence criteria were satisfied for all PK/PD endpoints, with 90% confidence intervals (CIs) falling within the 0.80~1.25 range, with the exception of AUCGIR,0–12h at the 0.4 U/kg dose (90% CI: 0.944~1.333). Notably, the 0.4 U/kg dose exhibited significantly higher intra-CV for AUCGIR,0–24h (24.9% vs. 20.2%, p = 0.049) and AUCGIR,0–12h (37.6% vs. 27.6%, p = 0.005) compared to the 0.5 U/kg dose. Conclusions: Applying a 0.5 U/kg dose reduced intra-subject PD variability and improved equivalence likelihood for secondary endpoints, indicating that a higher single dose might be optimal in bioequivalence study design.
