Cover Story: Vision-based human activity recognition is crucial in video analytics. Recent strides in deep learning improved action detection, yet at times sacrifice robustness for computational efficiency. This challenge of balancing efficiency and robustness hampers complex action recognition in real time on edge devices. This paper introduces a dual-focused, efficient, and robust approach that is suitable for edge devices. The proposed approach leverages saliency-sensitive spatial-temporal features for action identification. The proposed DA-R3DCNN efficiently extracts vital human-centric features via unified attention and dual layers, bolstered by 3D convolutions. The results indicate that the proposed method achieves up to 74× frames per second (FPS) improvement over contemporary methods, confirming its real-time applicability for activity recognition.
