Cover Story: This study reveals that Nitinol corrosion is governed not simply by temperature, but by its evolving martensitic–austenitic phase state. By coupling DSC-defined transformation regimes with electrochemical testing, impedance spectroscopy, 3D profilometry, SEM-EDS, and XPS, we directly connect phase coexistence to passive-film destabilization and localized attack. Fully martensitic NiTi showed the strongest passivity and negligible pitting, whereas the mixed-phase region produced internal galvanic interactions, accelerated dissolution, and the most severe pit damage, peaking near 40 °C. Austenite partially restored corrosion resistance at higher temperatures. These findings provide a mechanistic framework for designing NiTi components exposed to thermal cycling and chloride-rich environments. View this paper
