Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Sheet metal forming is a fundamental manufacturing process that enables the production of lightweight, high-strength components for automotive, aerospace, energy and many other applications. Increasing demands for sustainability, material efficiency, and advanced performance have accelerated research into innovative forming technologies. Recent developments focus on improving formability, enhancing forming quality, reducing energy consumption, and enabling the processing of advanced alloys such as high-strength steels, aluminum, magnesium, titanium and nickel, which are essential for next-generation engineering solutions.
This Special Issue aims to present state-of-the-art research and technological innovations that advance both the scientific understanding and industrial application of sheet metal forming processes.
In addition to conventional and advanced forming techniques, this Special Issue encourages contributions addressing emerging trends such as smart and intelligent manufacturing. Sustainability-oriented approaches, including energy-efficient forming, material utilisation strategies and circular manufacturing concepts, are also of interest.
We invite original research articles and comprehensive reviews on topics including, but not limited to:
- Cold and hot sheet forming of lightweight alloys
- Formability improvement strategies
- Microstructure enhancement
- Tooling design, lubrication and tribology
- Numerical modelling, simulation and process control
- Smart and intelligent manufacturing
- Sustainable forming practices and life-cycle analysis
- Industrial applications in automotive, aerospace, energy and other sectors
We look forward to receiving your contributions to this Special Issue, which aims to provide a platform for disseminating cutting-edge knowledge and fostering innovation in sheet metal forming.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
