Additive Manufacturing
A section of Metals (ISSN 2075-4701).
Section Information
The Additive Manufacturing Section covers fundamental and applied research on the layer-by-layer fabrication, processing, characterization, and performance of metallic materials and components. The Section welcomes contributions addressing the relationships among feedstock characteristics, process parameters, thermal history, solidification, microstructure, defects, and residual stresses and the resulting mechanical, physical, functional, and surface properties. Particular attention is paid to advances in powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, binder jetting, material extrusion, sheet lamination, hybrid manufacturing, and emerging additive manufacturing technologies for metals and alloys.
The Section also encourages studies on alloy design for additive manufacturing, process monitoring and control, computational modelling, digital manufacturing, post-processing and heat treatment, qualification and standardization, repair and remanufacturing, sustainability, and industrial implementation. Experimental, numerical, and data-driven investigations are welcome, including research on topology optimization, lattice and architected structures, multi-material systems, process–structure–property relationships, defect mitigation, reliability, and performance under service conditions. Through its focus on metallic feedstocks, metallurgical transformations, manufacturing science, and component performance, the Section complements the broader scope of Metals by providing a dedicated platform for highlighting developments across the complete additive manufacturing value chain.
