Cover Story: Tribological testing of selected PEEK-based polymers revealed a strong load-dependent response to CrN coatings. At a normal load of 2 N, uncoated PEEK exhibited lower friction coefficients and smoother wear tracks than coated samples. However, at 4 N, CrN-coated PEEK demonstrated reduced friction, enhanced sliding stability, and superior wear resistance. These improvements are attributed to load-induced tribo-oxidation and the formation of a protective chromium oxide-rich tribolayer that stabilized the contact interface and suppressed adhesive wear. The findings highlight the potential of CrN coatings to significantly improve the load-bearing capacity and tribological performance of lightweight PEEK components for demanding engineering applications.
