Journal History

2011	The inaugural issue was released. Coatings was published as a quarterly journal.
2016	Coatings was indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE)—Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics), starting with Volume 1 (Issue 1).
2017	Coatings received its first Impact Factor (2.175). Coatings adopted a monthly publication schedule.
2018	Coatings received its 2017 Impact Factor (2.350). The 5-year Impact Factor is 2.969. Coatings has been evaluated for inclusion in Scopus by the Content Selection & Advisory Board (CSAB), and will be added in Scopus from Vol. 8 (2018).
2019	Coatings received its 2018 Impact Factor (2.330). The 5-year Impact Factor is 2.684. Coatings was indexed in Scopus, starting with Volume 1 (Issue 1). Coatings received its first CiteScore (2018) of 2.420. The 1st Coatings and Interfaces Web Conference was held. The Korean Tribology Society (KTS) became affiliated to Coatings. Coatings published its 1,000th paper.
2020	The Impact Factor increased to 2.436 in 2019, ranked 59/120 (Q2 in SJR) in "Materials Science: Surfaces, Coatings and Films". The 5-year Impact Factor is 2.718. Coatings was divided into 13 sections: -Bioactive Coatings and Biointerfaces; -Corrosion, Wear and Erosion; -Coatings for Food Technology and System; -Plasma Coatings, Surfaces & Interfaces; -Surface Characterization, Deposition and Modification; -Surface Coatings for Biomedicine and Bioengineering; -Thin Films; -Tribology; -Liquid–Fluid Coatings, Surfaces and Interfaces; -Selected Papers from International Conferences and Workshops; -Surface Engineering for Energy Harvesting, Conversion, and Storage; -Functional Polymer Coatings and Films; -Ceramic Coatings and Engineering Technology. The 2nd Coatings and Interfaces Web Conference was held.
2021	The Impact Factor increased to 2.881 (+18.3% compared with 2019), ranked Q2 (10 of 21) in "MATERIALS SCIENCE, COATINGS & FILMS" and Q2 (70 of 160) in "PHYSICS, APPLIED". The 5-year Impact Factor is 3.038. Coatings established the following section: -Environmental Aspects in Colloid and Interface Science. Coatings announced the 2021 Young Investigator Award.
2022	The Impact Factor increased to 3.236 (+12.3% compared with 2020), ranked Q2 (9 of 19) in "MATERIALS SCIENCE, COATINGS & FILMS" and Q2 (66 of 161) in the "PHYSICS, APPLIED".
2023	The Impact Factor increased to 3.4 (+5.1% compared with 2021). The ranking of coatings in the 3 sub-categories all raised from +2% to +7.7%. The CiteScore increased to 4.7.
2024	The CiteScore increased to 5.0. The first Coatings Physical Conference (MCST 2024) was held (Lanzhou, 24–26 May).
2025	The CiteScore increased to 5.4. Coatings was indexed in Ei Compendex (Elsevier), starting with Volume 15 (Issue 4). The 2nd Coatings Physical Conference (MCST 2025) was held (Wuhan, 21-23 November).
2026	Coatings established the following sections: Metal Surface Process; Diamond and Related Coatings; Architectural and Infrastructure Coatings; Cultural Heritage and Protective Coatings; Composite Coatings. Plasma Coatings, Surfaces & Interfaces was merged with Laser Coatings to create a new section High-Energy Beam Surface Engineering and Coatings.
