Cover Story: Hybridization extends beyond the aggregate system level and can target individual components to enhance engine performance. This work focuses on reducing engine-out emissions in a medium- to heavy-duty diesel engine using an electrified airpath. A 3.2 L two-cylinder opposed piston two-stroke (OP2S) engine with an electrically assisted turbocharger and EGR pump was tested under transient conditions in a hardware-in-the-loop setup. Various actuator strategies, including fuel rate shaping, were evaluated for soot and NOx reduction, demonstrating enhanced airpath control performance during rich tip-in phases. An optimized case achieved up to 92% soot and 77% NOx reduction for a transient load step from 3 to 13 bar BMEP at 1250 rpm. View this paper
