Machines 2023 Outstanding Reviewer Award
Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Antonio J. Marques Cardoso, we wish to acknowledge our reviewers who so generously offer their time to review the papers submitted to Machines by presenting an award to the reviewers who have demonstrated their dedication, professionalism, and timeliness in reviewing manuscripts for Machines.
What are the pre-requisites to be eligible for this award?
All of the reviewers for Machines in 2023 will be automatically included.
Selection Criteria:
– Number of review reports;
– The quality and timeliness of review reports.
What will the winners receive?
There will be two winners this year, and each will receive the following:
– CHF 500;
– An opportunity to publish a paper free of charge in Machines in 2024 after peer review;
– A certificate.
When will the winners be announced?
The winners will be announced on the journal website on 15 April 2024.

Machines 2023 Intelligent Manufacturing Award
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that Machines is now inviting applications for the Machines 2023 Intelligent Manufacturing Award. This prize will be given to one applicant who has made a unique and outstanding academic or societal contribution to intelligent manufacturing. All applications will be assessed by an Award Evaluation Committee led by the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Antonio J. Marques Cardoso.
The Prize:
– CHF 1000;
– Option to publish one paper free of charge in Machines after peer review before the end of 2024;
– An electronic certificate.
Eligibility and Requirements:
– Must have received their PhD no more than 10 years prior to 31 December 2023;
– Have made a unique and outstanding academic or societal contribution to intelligent manufacturing.

– The self-recommendation summary and contact details (including title, name, institutional affiliation, and email address);
– Scanned copy of doctorate certificate;
– The related work summary:
a. A detailed description of the applicant’s work (max. 3000 words), highlighting the contributions to intelligent manufacturing;
b. Applicant’s detailed CV;
c. Applicant’s intelligent manufacturing-related publications or social work;
d. Applicant’s list of funded projects (if available);
e. A recommendation letter from a senior scientist;
f. Other relevant information (supplementary materials).

Machines 2023 Young Investigator Award
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that Machines is now inviting nominations for the Machines 2023 Young Investigator Award. This prize will be given to one young investigator in recognition of their excellence in the field of machinery and engineering. All nominations will be assessed by an Award Evaluation Committee led by the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Antonio J. Marques Cardoso.
The Prize
– CHF 1500 (Swiss francs);
– The option to publish one paper free of charge in Machines after peer review before the end of 2024;
– An electronic certificate.
Eligibility and Requirements
– Must have received their PhD no more than 10 years prior to 31 December 2023;
– Must have produced ground-breaking research and made a significant contribution to the advancement of machinery and engineering;
– Candidates must be nominated by senior scientists.

Machines 2023 Best PhD Thesis Award
Dear Colleagues,
The journal Machines is inviting applications for the 2023 Best PhD Thesis Award. This prize will be awarded to a PhD student or recently qualified PhD who has produced a highly anticipated thesis with great academic potential. The applications will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee led by the journal’s Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Antonio J. Marques Cardoso.
Eligibility and Requirements:
– The candidate must be a PhD student or recently qualified PhD who has produced a highly anticipated thesis with great academic potential;
– The PhD thesis must be their original work;
– The PhD thesis must be defended between 01 September 2022 and 31 August 2023.
Required Application Documents:
– An executive summary of the PhD thesis in English of around 3000 words;
– A letter from the PhD supervisor recommending the candidate for consideration for this award;
– The candidate’s CV, including a list of publications connected with the thesis;
– An electronic copy of the PhD thesis;
– A scanned copy of the PhD diploma (or certificate of studying at a school or research institute as a PhD student going on to graduate or participate in graduation thesis defenses).
Selection Criteria:
– Quality of resume and publications;
– Relevance of the candidate and research description;
– Novelty of the candidate’s PhD thesis;
– Strength of the recommendation letter;
– Anticipated academic potential;
– Originality and impact of the research.
Prizes:
– Bonus (CHF 500);

Machines 2022 Best Paper Award
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the “Machines 2022 Best Paper Award” for research and review articles published in Machines from 01 January 2022 to 31 December 2022. One review and one research article will receive an award each. The papers will be selected after a thorough evaluation by the journal Award Committee led by the Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Dr. Antonio J. Marques Cardoso.
Eligibility for the Award:
– Papers published in Machines from 01 January 2022 to 31 December 2022;
– Open to all career levels;
– Both regular and Special Issue submissions will be considered.
Selection Criteria:
The papers will be selected by the journal Award Committee according to the following criteria:
– Scientific merit and broad impact;
– Originality of the research objectives and/or the ideas presented;
– Creativity of the study design or uniqueness of the approaches and concepts;
– Clarity of presentation;
– Citations and downloads.
The Prize:

Machines 2022 Young Investigator Award
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Machines 2022 Young Investigator Award are Dr. Fernando José Figueiredo Bento, Dr. Goshtasp Cheraghian and Dr. Roman Mykhailyshyn.
Dr. Fernando Bento is a PhD Researcher at CISE—Electromechatronic Systems Research Centre, and is also an Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Electromechanical Engineering, University of Beira Interior. He has co-authored 1 book chapter, published 9 articles in high impact factor journals, and delivered 19 communications in highly renowned conference proceedings. His scientific research activities focus on energy efficiency analysis, fault diagnostics and fault tolerance in electronic power converters, namely DC‒DC converters.
Dr. Goshtasp Cheraghian is currently a postdoctoral scientist in the Functional Nanomaterials group at the Humboldt University of Berlin and King’s College, London. Dr. Cheraghian’s research interests focus on polymer nanocomposites, nanotechnology for energy and environmental applications and materials characterization. He has been among the top 2% of scientists in the world for three consecutive years and the top 500 scientists in the field of energy. Dr. Cheraghian has also published over 80 research papers (citation>2700, h-index: 33, i10-index: 55), 3 chapters in books, obtained 9 granted patents.
Dr. Roman Mykhailyshyn is a Visiting Scholar at the Texas Robotics, College of Natural Sciences and the Cockrell School of Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, USA, working with Prof. Ann Majewicz Fey. From 2023, Dr. Mykhailyshyn has been an Adjunct Professor at the EPAM School of Digital Technologies, American University, Kyiv. Dr. Mykhailyshyn is an author of more than 30 articles, published in leading scholarly journals. His research focuses on robotics, grasping and manipulation, motion planning and optimization, modeling of physical systems, additive manufacturing and design of gripping devices for robots.
As awardees, each of them will receive an honorarium of CHF 1000, an offer to publish a paper free of charge before the end of August 2023 in Machines after peer-review and an engraved plaque.

We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Machines 2021 Young Investigator Award are Dr. Chen Lv, Dr. Ignacio Gonzalez-Prieto, and Dr. Ning Sun.
Dr. Chen Lv is an Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and the Cluster Director in Future Mobility Solutions, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. Chen Lv’s research focuses on human-centric design, optimization and control for advanced mechatronics with particular applications in vehicle intelligence and electrification. He has published 2 books, over 120 papers (6 ESI highly cited papers, 2 hot papers, citation>3700, h-index: 33, i10-index: 70), obtained 12 granted patents, received numerous awards, and realized several real-world applications.
Dr. Ignacio Gonzalez-Prieto is currently a Juan de la Cierva Incorporacion researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering in the University of Malaga (UMA), Spain. Dr. Ignacio Gonzalez-Prieto’s research interests include multiphase machines, wind energy systems, and electrical vehicles. He has been a research member with active participation in the research group ACE-TI (recognized by Junta de Andalucía with the denomination TIC 201) since September 2013. During his collaboration with ACE-TI, he obtained 38 JCR journal papers, with 27 of them located in the first quartile (Q1) according to the JCR index. Regarding the quality of his publications, a significant number of them (20) have been published in first decile journals. A high impact on the area of multiphase electric drives has been generated as a consequence of his research activity (1387 citations, h-index=18 Google Scholar, h-index=16 WoS).
Dr. Ning Sun is currently a Full Professor at the Institute of Robotics and Automatic Information Systems, College of Artificial Intelligence, Nankai University, China. His research interests include dynamics analysis and advanced control of mechatronic/robotic/mechanical systems with applications in industrial systems, etc. He has published more than 50 papers in prestigious journals and has had 18 Chinese invention patents granted. Moreover, he has been granted more than 10 research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)-Key Program and the National Key Research and Development Program of China. He has received several important awards, including the 2021 IEEE Outstanding Paper Award for the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics.
As the awardees, each of them will receive an honorarium of 1000 CHF, an offer to publish a paper free of charge before the end of August 2022 in Machines after peer-review, and an engraved plaque.

Dear Colleagues,
As Editor-in-Chief of Machines, I am pleased to announce the winner of the 2019 Travel Award sponsored by Machines. The award was granted to Mr. Matteo Perini, Ph.D. student of University of Trento. He will be supported with 800 Swiss Francs to cover travel expenses of AIV XXIV Conference was held in Giardini Naxos, Italy.
Mr. Matteo Perini’s current research focuses on robotics, the latest technologies, programming, CNC machines, artificial intelligence, automation, electronics, climbing, paragliding, and open-source practices. He currently is a researcher in the hybrid repair process with additive technologies, an additive manufacturing expert, a programmer, and an R&D manager.
Machines is proud to support this young researcher working in the field of machinery and engineering and wishes him further success in his career.
