Cover Story: What happens to a drone formation when some drones lose their GPS signals in windy conditions? DAPE-Form is a decentralized framework that keeps multi-drone formations in shape under these constraints. Drones that lose GPS reconstruct their position by filtering noisy inter-drone distances with Adaptive Value Tracking (AVT) and applying multilateration with GPS-equipped neighbors. An Extended State Observer runs continuously to estimate and reject wind disturbances, while an event-triggered controller updates actuator commands only when needed. Lyapunov analysis guarantees bounded errors and excludes Zeno behavior. In experiments with DJI Tello quadrotors, DAPE-Form reduced control updates by 30% in simulations and up to 70% in real flights, while tracking as well as or better than other controllers. View this paper
