Background and Objectives: The lockdown imposed by public health authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many behaviours, including physical activity (PA). This study aimed to assess changes in selected components of the 24 h movement behaviours during the COVID-19 lockdown and to examine whether changes in these components were associated with changes in self-perceived physical health, mental health and sleep quality. Materials and Methods: The sample was drawn from the MAVIPAN study, a mixed-methods based, prospective, observational, longitudinal cohort study. In the present analyses, we used cross-sectional self-reported data collected through online questionnaires. Participants in the present analyses had to be 18 years of age and have complete gender and PA data (n = 2268). Results: During the lockdown, reductions in total PA (effect size: −8.4%; 95% CI: −11.9%, −4.7%; p < 0.0001) and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA) (effect size: −8.7%; 95% CI: −13.1%, −4.1%; p < 0.0001) were observed. Total PA increased during the lockdown among participants who self-perceived their physical health, mental health, and sleep quality as better compared to those who reported worse outcomes (p < 0.0001). After adjusting for several confounding variables, an increase in MVPA of 30 min per week was associated with higher odds of reporting better physical health (1.65; 95% CI: 1.51, 1.81; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Although our study design does not allow causal inference, these findings are concordant with public health strategies considering PA to help enhance and maintain physical and mental health, including sleep quality, in both constrained and everyday conditions. A three-year (January 2020–December 2022) daily dataset of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) collected in parallel with PM2.5 and a suite of meteorological variables at a coastal Mediterranean urban site in southern Italy (Pomigliano d’Arco, Campania) is presented and analysed. Raw PAH time series were decomposed into a long-term trend component (LT), a seasonal component (ST), and a residual component (RT) using an iterative missing-value-robust Kolmogorov–Zurbenko (KZ) moving-average filter. Spearman rank correlations between PAH concentrations and four meteorological predictors (mean temperature, relative humidity, mean wind speed, and maximum wind speed) were computed for each congener. Diagnostic molecular ratios—Fla/(Fla + Pyr), BaP/BghiP, Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene/(IcdP + BghiP), and BaA/(BaA + Chr)—were evaluated seasonally and interpreted jointly with an information-theoretic Bayesian mixture modelling procedure (SNOB/MML) and with the documented susceptibility of some PAH ratios, especially BaP-containing ratios, to atmospheric ageing, phase repartitioning and summer photodegradation. Total PAH concentrations (sum of 16 congeners) ranged from <1 ng m−3 in summer to 46 ng m−3 during winter high-pollution episodes, with BaP peaking at ≈6.7 ng m−3. Because BaP was measured in the PM2.5 fraction, comparisons with the EU annual target value of 1 ng m−3 established for PM10-bound BaP are treated as indicative context only, not as formal compliance statements. Pronounced seasonal variability was driven primarily by residential heating emissions, and the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for inhalation exposure reached 1.03×104 (95% CI: 0.881.20×104) during the heating season under a continuous outdoor-exposure worst-case scenario. The absolute ILCR magnitude is conditional on the selected TEF scheme and on the adopted BaP unit-risk coefficient; under an additional indoor-dominated scenario (16 h day−1, infiltration factor 0.6), the corresponding risk remained above the conventional 106 benchmark. An anomalous near-background PAH signal during spring 2020 is attributed to the COVID-19 national lockdown, which reduced total PAH concentrations by approximately 85% relative to the seasonal component predicted by the iterative moving-average filter for the same calendar window. Source apportionment via diagnostic ratios identifies residential/biomass combustion as the dominant cold-season source and vehicular emissions as the prevailing warm-season source. These results provide a novel characterisation of PAH pollution dynamics in the undersampled southern Mediterranean and provide evidence to support targeted abatement policies. Full article

Background and Objectives: Pediatric forearm fractures are among the most common childhood injuries. COVID-19-related societal restrictions, including school closures and suspension of sports activities, altered children’s daily routines and may have influenced injury patterns. This study aimed to evaluate whether periods of stricter COVID-19 restrictions were associated with changes in the incidence of pediatric distal and diaphyseal forearm fractures after accounting for seasonal variation and long-term temporal trends. Materials and Methods: This retrospective observational time-series study analyzed pediatric patients aged 0–17 years who underwent forearm radiography between January 2018 and June 2023 at a tertiary pediatric trauma center. Cases with radiologically confirmed distal or diaphyseal forearm fractures or epiphyseal injuries were included. Monthly fracture counts were analyzed using generalized linear models with logarithmic link functions. Exposure variables included a COVID-19 restriction index based on governmental measures and a binary pandemic indicator. Seasonal variation and long-term temporal trends were included as covariates. Results: A total of 5702 forearm radiographs were identified, of which 4041 trauma-related presentations met the inclusion criteria. Among these, 2014 children had confirmed forearm fractures. Boys accounted for 61% of cases, and the median age was 9 years (IQR 5). Most fractures were treated conservatively (88%). The most frequent injury mechanisms included soccer-related injuries (9.6%) and bicycle falls (7.3%). In regression analyses adjusted for seasonal variation and temporal trends, neither the COVID-19 restriction index (IRR 1.01, 95% CI 0.87–1.17; p = 0.95) nor the pandemic period indicator (IRR 0.99, 95% CI 0.37–2.65; p = 0.98) was significantly associated with monthly fracture counts. The wide confidence interval of the pandemic indicator reflects limited statistical precision and suggests that both clinically relevant decreases and increases in fracture incidence cannot be excluded. Conclusions: No sustained long-term changes in the incidence or injury patterns of pediatric forearm fractures were observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Temporary fluctuations during early lockdown phases were not independently associated with governmental restrictions after adjustment for seasonal variability and long-term trends. Full article

Background/Objectives: During the first COVID-19 lockdown, the sudden disruption of formal care services substantially increased reliance on informal caregiving. Emerging evidence suggests that increased caregiving demands may have contributed to a higher burden of mental-health-related temporary work disability; however, population-based data from occupational health systems remain limited. This study aimed to quantify and characterise, descriptively, the sociodemographic, clinical, and territorial characteristics of mental-health-related temporary work disability among workers with informal caregiving responsibilities in Spain during the first COVID-19 lockdown, and to descriptively examine differences between episodes occurring among workers with and without caregiving responsibilities. Methods: A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using anonymised nationwide occupational health records from Mutua Asepeyo. All episodes of temporary work disability certified for mental and behavioural disorders (ICD-10 F00–F99) between 14 March and 21 June 2020 were analysed. Caregiver status was determined based on documented informal caregiving responsibilities recorded within the occupational disability records. Sociodemographic, occupational, clinical, and territorial variables were examined using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. Results: A total of 2857 caregiver-associated episodes were identified, representing 55.6% (95% CI: 54.2–57.0) of all mental-health-related temporary work disability episodes during the study period. The majority involved women (68.1%) and caregivers of older dependent adults (59.3%). Generalised anxiety disorder was the most frequent diagnosis, followed by adjustment disorders and acute stress reactions, with significant differences by sex and employment regime. Marked territorial variability was observed, as well as longer durations of temporary work disability in specific regions and among women. Conclusions: A substantial proportion of mental-health-related temporary work disability episodes during the lockdown occurred among workers with informal caregiving responsibilities, particularly women and those caring for older dependents. These findings suggest that informal caregiving may be a determinant of occupational mental health during crises. However, given the descriptive and unadjusted nature of the study, no causal inferences can be drawn. Further research is needed to understand these associations better and inform future occupational health strategies. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges, requiring compliance with public health measures. Notably, guilt is a powerful motivator for rule adherence; however, different types of guilt could have fueled the decision to stay home. This study investigated how guilt propensity influenced Italians’ self-reported motivations for adhering to containment rules. The propensity to different types of guilt, namely deontological and altruistic, was assessed in a total of 393 participants (261 females, 66.4%; 132 males, 33.6%; M age = 34.4, SD = 12.6) in May 2020, between the first and the second phases of Italian lockdown. The survey assessed four guilt dispositions—Moral Norm Violation (MNV), Moral Dirtiness (MODI), Harm-based guilt (HARM), and Empathy-based guilt (EMPATHY)—alongside fear of COVID-19, trust in authorities, and motivations for rule compliance (e.g., protecting one’s own and others’ well-being, respecting authorities, and avoiding sanctions). MNV emerged as a positive predictor of prosocial, authority-based and personal motivations, whereas MODI predicted lower prosocial motivation. HARM selectively predicted prosocial motivation and was negatively associated with authority-based motivations, while EMPATHY negatively predicted self-focused motivations. Moderation analyses revealed small but significant interaction effects, indicating that fear of COVID-19 slightly amplified the influence of EMPATHY and attenuated the effect of HARM, whereas trust in authorities strengthened the link between EMPATHY and prosocial compliance and reduced the association between MNV and prosocial motivations. These findings suggest that compliance during the pandemic was shaped by distinct emotional–moral pathways and that the motivational impact of guilt depends on perceived threat and institutional trust, highlighting the relevance of specific guilt profiles in promoting cooperative and health-protective behaviors. COVID-19 disrupted daily routines, altering eating patterns. However, it could encourage individuals to adopt healthier behaviors. While extensive research documented changes in dietary behaviors during the COVID-19 lockdown, few studies explored whether they persisted over time. This study aimed to identify the long-term effects of the pandemic on lifestyle and eating behaviors of families from a private primary school in Funes County, Rosario, Argentina. A total of 51 families (192 individuals) completed an anonymous survey on food intake and perceived dietary and lifestyle changes since the pandemic began. Multiple correspondence analysis revealed increased consumption of fast/processed foods, larger portion sizes, and snacking linked to eating from boredom, stress, or tiredness. Increased home-cooked meals, physical activity, interest in healthy habits, and leisure time enjoyment were also found. Dietary analysis revealed that higher intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and water was inversely associated with consumption of refined grains, cold cuts, pastries, and sugary drinks. Boredom, stress, or tiredness led to unfavorable changes. Interest in health, changes in home routines, spending more time together, and preparing meals with family resulted in healthier behaviors that remained present at the time of this study. Ground-nesting shorebirds face growing pressure from recreational activities in coastal urban areas. We monitored the breeding success of Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus) and Little Ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius) over six consecutive years (2020–2025) at the Promenade of Sablettes, a heavily visited waterfront in Algiers, Algeria. We combined field surveys with multi-sensor remote sensing analysis using Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, and Dynamic World data to quantify habitat change. A total of 105 nests were recorded across both species. Breeding success reached 70% during the COVID-19 lockdown period (2020–2021), when human visitation dropped sharply. In contrast, complete reproductive failure occurred in 2022 and 2023, coinciding with resumed tourism and unplanned construction activities. Remote sensing revealed that 80–85% of the study area experienced severe habitat degradation between 2020 and 2025, while suitable refuge zones shrank to less than 10% of the total surface. Fledged chicks consistently moved toward a less disturbed vegetated zone, highlighting its functional importance for brood survival. Our results show that human disturbance is the primary factor limiting breeding success at this site, operating through two pathways: direct disturbance of nesting birds and progressive habitat degradation driven by recreational use and unplanned construction. When disturbance was reduced during the pandemic, the habitat proved fully functional for both species. These findings suggest that simple management measures such as seasonal access restrictions and symbolic fencing during the April–July breeding period could restore breeding conditions without major habitat engineering. This study provides one of the first integrations of long-term field breeding data with landscape-scale remote sensing to document the effects of the anthropause and subsequent recovery on urban shorebird populations. Objectives: Early childhood caries (ECC) remains a significant global health issue. COVID-19 disrupted protective factors such as in-office parental support and routine dental screenings. This study investigates caries prevalence and severity in Hungarian toddlers (<3 years) born during the lockdown, compared with pre-pandemic data from 2019. Methods: A serial cross-sectional study was conducted through nursery-based dental screenings and a parental questionnaire. Key indices (caries prevalence; average number of decayed, missing, and filled tooth—dmf-t index; Significant Caries Index—SiC-index; and Restorative Index—RI) were calculated and analyzed in relation to parental education and knowledge of caries etiology. The results were compared to 2019 data. Results: A total of 636 children were examined; 274 (mean age: 29.37 ± 4.56 months) were part of the 2024 cohort. Caries prevalence decreased from 15.46% in 2019 to 13.87%. The mean dmf-t index also declined significantly (0.685 ± 2.20 vs. 0.383 ± 1.29; p = 0.025). Initial feeding practices, such as exclusive breastfeeding, were positively linked to later liquid intake habits (p < 0.01). Prenatal information did not affect caries rates or cariogenic liquid consumption. While parental education level was significantly related to caries prevalence and feeding practices in 2019, its influence was less marked in the 2024 cohort. Conclusions: ECC prevalence declined slightly among children born during the pandemic but remains high. Prenatal education did not promote healthier feeding-related oral health behaviors or outcomes. The reduced impact of parental education post-lockdown may suggest that heightened general health awareness during the pandemic lessened education-based disparities. Full article

Cortisol is built into the circadian clock mechanism, but it is also the body’s natural response to stress. Insight into sex-specific cortisol fluctuations may elucidate individual differences in physiological and pathological patterns. This cross-sectional study examined sex-specific adaptation to stress induced by COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown in foreign medical students at I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University, Ukraine (TNMU). Salivary cortisol was analyzed using cluster-based mathematical modeling to identify natural groupings in the data. Perceived stress was measured using Perceived stress scale-10 (PSS-10). The academic success was accessed from the official records of the TNMU. Average value of area under the curve (AUC) of daily salivary cortisol from the whole sample showed that men had higher cortisol than women. Mathematical clustering explained shift of the cortisol peak, and divided sample into 5 clusters—two of which had predicted daily cortisol pattern and represented most participants (65.6% men and 73.6% women), while the rest had aberrant daily cortisol pattern. Females had higher total PSS-10 score than males. PSS-10 subscales correlated with aberrant daily cortisol pattern. Unexpectedly, COVID-related circumstances did not have impact on participants’ academic success. Full article

Previous studies have shown that religion and spirituality can provide resources to cope with aging and impact the well-being of older adults. However, whether religiosity and well-being are linked depends on how they are measured. Moreover, the size of statistically significant effects often remains small or even negligible. In Switzerland, two historical religious communities—Catholic and Protestant—have coexisted for centuries, providing an opportunity for exploring potential differences in religious practices of members of these two communities and their effects on well-being. Two populations were targeted: elderly people engaged in organized volunteering and elderly people receiving home care services. A total of 617 volunteers and 614 home care clients returned complete and valid questionnaires. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 43 volunteers and 35 home care clients to gain deeper insights into their experiences. Since the data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic, we also explored how participants experienced the semi-lockdown restrictions. The results show that knowing religious affiliation is not sufficient to predict well-being. The degree of identification with the declared affiliation must also be taken into account. Differences between Protestants and Catholics can be highlighted, especially when considering religious practices in more detail. The impact of the pandemic on well-being is only moderately associated with religiosity. Full article

Stress, Diet, and Sleep Shape Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome-Specific Symptoms: The Lockdown “Cocoon Effect”

Background/Objectives: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a highly prevalent gastrointestinal disorder affecting almost 10% of the general population, characterized by recurrent abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. Its pathophysiology is incompletely understood, but it is established that symptoms result from an interplay between several environmental- and patient-related factors. This study aimed to analyze the influence of a widespread shift in lifestyle habits and multidimensional stress on IBS manifestations. Methods: An online survey was administered during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 to three groups of people representative of the general population. The survey contained questions regarding socio-demographic data, dietary habits, alcohol, smoking, physical activity, sleeping, working activities, stress level, and the characteristics of gastrointestinal symptoms related to both the pre-pandemic period and the lockdown period. The definition of IBS was based on the Rome IV criteria. Multivariate analyses were used to evaluate the association between environmental variables and the occurrence/resolution of IBS. Results: A total of 2735 participants were enrolled. Among them, 122 patients (46.2%) reported symptoms’ improvement during the observation period, while 118 previously healthy subjects (4.8%) developed IBS symptoms. Reduced general stress (OR = 2.2, 95%CI 1.1–4.6, p = 0.029), increased fiber intake (OR = 2.8, 95%CI 1.6–5.0, p < 0.001), and increased hours of sleep (OR = 2.0, 95%CI 1.1–3.8, p = 0.031) were associated with a high probability of IBS resolution, while increased anxiolytic pill intake (OR = 0.14, 95%CI 0.04–0.46, p = 0.001) showed a low likelihood of IBS resolution. Reduced physical activity (OR = 2.0, 95%CI 1.3–3.2, p = 0.002), increased anti-inflammatory effects (OR = 2.4, 95%CI 1.4–4.1, p = 0.002), anxiolytic pill intake (OR = 3.5, 95%CI 2.1–5.9, p < 0.001), and increased work-related stress (OR = 1.8, 95%CI 1.2–2.8, p = 0.009) were risk factors for IBS symptoms’ occurrence. Reduced alcohol consumption was a protective factor (OR = 0.5, 95%CI 0.3–0.8, p = 0.006). The resolution of IBS did not affect upper gastrointestinal functional symptoms (OR = 0.2, 95%CI 0.1–0.3, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The widespread lifestyle change forced by the pandemic created a protective “Cocoon Effect”, resulting in a beneficial effect in almost half of patients with IBS. Our findings provide large-scale evidence that environmental factors play a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of IBS. Specifically, stress levels, fiber intake, sleep patterns, and alcohol consumption are key modifiable drivers of symptom occurrence and resolution. Full article

Background and Objectives: Previous research shows that stress can alter eating habits. This study analyzed the impact of COVID-19 confinement on eating behaviors and weight in Spanish adults, as well as related factors. Methods: A total of 2834 adults (69.3% women, Mean age: 41.36) completed an online questionnaire assessing eating habits, weight, and sociodemographic variables. Results: Strict lockdown in Spain was linked to a general worsening of eating habits, particularly increased food intake and weight gain. Risk factors for less healthy eating and weight gain included being female (p < 0.001), under 35 years old (p < 0.001), overweight or obese (p < 0.001), caring for minors (p = 0.002), and experiencing nervousness or anxiety (p < 0.001). Conversely, maintaining pre-confinement eating habits and weight was more common among men (p < 0.001), individuals aged 50 years or older (p < 0.001), those with normal or underweight BMI (p < 0.001), those working outside the home (p < 0.013), and those without minors in their care (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Prolonged lockdowns associated with high stress may negatively influence diet and weight. Prevention strategies should therefore promote healthy eating during such periods, particularly targeting groups at higher risk of worsening habits and weight gain. Full article

Influence of Human Activity on Wet Deposition and Nitrogen Species in Coastal and Marine Environments

In this study, 101 and 102 rainwater samples were collected from April 2020 to February 2024 in a coastal and marine area, respectively. The results show that the Cl/Na ratios in both study areas were lower than the seawater value (1.17), suggesting chloride depletion. The chloride depletion rates in both areas decreased after the COVID-19 lockdown period. The molar ratio of NH4+ to non-sea-salt sulfate (nss-SO42−) was 1.54, with a mixture of (NH4)2SO4 and NH4HSO4 in the coastal area, and 0.83, with NH4HSO4 as the main form, in the marine area. A decreasing trend attributed to high O3 and relative humidity (RH) levels occurred in 2022. Among the dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) species, DON accounted for 24% and 32% of the total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in the coastal and marine areas, respectively, indicating a greater relative contribution under lower anthropogenic influence. On the basis of the correlation between the species and source analysis results, NO3 mainly originated from fossil fuel combustion, NH4+ originated from agricultural emissions and secondary aerosols, and DON originated from secondary aerosols via combustion processes and natural emissions. In terms of the flux, due to lockdown activities, the Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) flux decreased significantly from 40.6 to 19.3 mmol m−2 yr−1 in the coastal area and from 27.7 to 15.1 mmol m−2 yr−1 in the marine area. Additionally, a slight decrease occurred in the DON flux, from 21.6 to 19.3 mmol m−2 yr−1 and from 27.7 to 15.1 mmol m−2 yr−1, respectively. Regarding new production, based on nitrogen input, the level in the coastal area decreased from 5.83 to 2.10 g C m−2 yr−1, and that in the marine area decreased from 3.92 to 1.55 g C m−2 yr−1, indicating a significant reduction during the COVID-19 lockdown. Previous research shows that better socio-emotional skills are associated with students’ behavioral adjustment and positive learning outcomes; however, the protective role of socio-emotional skills regarding academic learning during global crises has not been studied sufficiently. This research aims to evaluate longitudinal changes in students’ socio-emotional skills and learning outcomes during the implementation of a universal prevention program Promoting Mental Health at Schools (PROMEHS). The research coincided with lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore allowing an assessment of the protective role of socio-emotional learning even in the face of adverse circumstances. In total, 3166 students (aged 7–17 years) from Latvia and Portugal participated in the research, and a survey of their respective teachers was used to collect data. The SSIS-SEL teacher form and a three-item learning outcomes measure addressing academic motivation, engagement, and performance were applied in the study. It was found that growth in socio-emotional skills has a positive effect on academic outcomes, while a decline in socio-emotional learning has a detrimental effect on academic outcomes. This applies to both experimental and control groups, both genders, all educational levels, and both countries. Additionally, the increase in socio-emotional skills predicted better academic outcomes in upper secondary schools than in primary and lower secondary schools. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic had a major impact on the reliability of global supply chains, the availability of selected products including food, food prices, food purchase and consumption behaviour. The aim of this study is to identify potential differences in food waste levels and behaviours in Germany during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic periods. The data are based on two highly representative household diary studies on food waste with sample sizes of over 6500 participants each. This study uses descriptive statistics as well as a mixed model approach to examine food waste amounts per product group, disposal reason and life cycle category and compare the survey year 2020 with the years 2016/17. A linear mixed model is applied to examine the effects of the pandemic and lockdown phases on the development of food waste amounts in 2020. The results show that total and unavoidable food waste increased significantly in the 2020 pandemic period compared to the same period in the 2016/17 survey, while avoidable food waste decreased. This suggests an improvement of food management skills while, at the same time, food consumption, and therefore also food waste, shifted from outside to inside the home. Also, the composition of product groups was affected by altered consumption patterns during the pandemic. The results are relevant to the post-pandemic period, as they raise the question of whether a deceleration in everyday life is a prerequisite for adopting more sustainable food behaviours and developing appropriate planning, storage and handling. Policies should therefore focus on encouraging citizens to engage with the issue, prioritise it and develop an interest in food management. Future research should focus on the ways in which behaviours that reduce food waste can be encouraged, as well as on the long-term effects of food supply chain disruptions and events altering everyday life in households in relation to food waste.
