Glass Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars are becoming increasingly common in structural engineering applications due to their superior material properties, mainly their resistance to corrosion due to their metallic nature in comparison to steel reinforcement and their improved durability in alkaline environments compared to CFRP and BFRP reinforcement. However, GFRP bars also suffer from a few limitations. One of the main issues that affects the performance of GFRP reinforcing bars is their bond with concrete, which may differ from the bond between traditional steel bars and concrete. However, despite the wide attention of researchers, there has not been a critical review of the recent research progress on bond behavior between GFRP bars and concrete. The objective of this paper is to provide an overview of the current state of research on bond in GFRP-reinforced concrete in an attempt to systematize the existing scientific knowledge. The study summarizes experimental investigations that directly measure bond strength and investigates the different factors that influence it. Additionally, an overview of the analytical and empirical models used to simulate bond behavior is then presented. The findings indicate the dependence of the bond on several factors that include bar diameter, bar surface, concrete strength, and embedment length. Additionally, it was concluded that both traditional and more recent bond models do not explicitly account for the effect of different factors, which highlights the need for improved bond models that do not require calibration with experimental tests. The gas-production potential of shale gas is a comprehensive evaluation metric that assesses the reservoir quality, gas-content properties, and gas-production capacity. Currently, the evaluation of gas-production potential is generally conducted through qualitative comparisons of relevant parameters, which can lead to multiple solutions and make it difficult to establish a comprehensive evaluation index. This paper introduces a gas-production potential evaluation method based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). It uses judgment matrices to analyze key parameters such as gas content, brittleness index, total organic carbon content, the length of high-quality gas-layer horizontal sections, porosity, gas saturation, formation pressure, and formation density. By integrating fuzzy mathematics, a mathematical model for gas-production potential is established, and corresponding gas-production levels are defined. The model categorizes gas-production potential into four levels: when the gas-production index exceeds 0.65, it is classified as a super-high-production well; when the gas-production index is between 0.45 and 0.65, it is classified as a high-production well; when the gas-production index is between 0.35 and 0.45, it is classified as a medium-production well; and when the gas-production index is below 0.35, it is classified as a low-production well. Field applications have shown that this model can accurately predict the gas-production potential of shale gas wells, showing a strong correlation with the unobstructed flow rate of gas wells, and demonstrating broad applicability. This study presents a quasi-static optimization framework for the pressure-based control of a multi-segment soft continuum manipulator. The proposed method circumvents traditional curvature and length-based modeling by directly identifying the quasi-static input–output relationship between actuator pressures and the 6-DoF end-effector pose. Experimental data were collected using a high-frequency electromagnetic tracking system under monotonic pressurization to minimize hysteresis effects. Transfer functions were identified for each coordinate–actuator pair using the System Identification Toolbox in MATLAB, and optimal actuator pressures were computed analytically by solving a constrained quadratic program via a manual active-set method. The resulting control strategy achieved sub-millimeter positioning error while minimizing the number of actuators engaged. The approach is computationally efficient, sensor-minimal, and fully implementable in open-loop settings. Despite certain limitations due to sensor nonlinearity and actuator hysteresis, the method provides a robust foundation for feedforward control and the real-time deployment of soft robots in quasi-static tasks. This study focuses on the Triangle of Central China and investigates the spatiotemporal evolution, driving factors, and impacts of population aging on regional sustainable development from 2000 to 2020. The study adopts an innovative two-scale analytical framework at the prefecture and district/county level, integrating spatial autocorrelation analysis, the Geodetector model, and geographically weighted regression. The results show a significant acceleration in population aging across the study area, accompanied by pronounced spatial clustering, particularly in western Hubei and the Wuhan metropolitan area. Over time, the spatial distribution has evolved from a relatively dispersed pattern to one of high concentration. Key drivers of the spatial heterogeneity of aging include economic disparities, demographic transitions, and the uneven spatial allocation of public services such as healthcare and education. These aging patterns profoundly affect the region’s potential for sustainable development. Accordingly, the study proposes a multi-scale collaborative governance strategy: At the prefecture level, efforts should focus on promoting the coordinated development of the silver economy and optimizing the spatial redistribution of healthcare resources; At the district and county level, priorities should include strengthening infrastructure, curbing the outflow of young labor, and improving access to basic public services. By integrating spatial analysis techniques with sustainable development policy recommendations, this study provides a basis for scientifically measuring, understanding, and managing demographic transitions. This is essential for achieving long-term socioeconomic sustainability in rapidly aging regions. Full article

With the increasing severity of traffic congestion, the impact of random traffic patterns has emerged as an indispensable factor in the fatigue design and assessment of highway bridges. In this study, an analytical approach has been proposed for modeling the effects of random traffic patterns on fatigue damage. A fatigue damage ratio, referred to as RPEF, is introduced to establish the correlation between damage and traffic characteristics. Two quantitative parameters representing two characteristics of traffic loads, namely the average loading occurrence number (scale parameter) and the vehicle headway COVs (shape parameter), have been found to be excellent indices for clustering the different dimensional randomness of RPEFs. Based on a comprehensive case study, the realization of using equivalent RPEFs to evaluate bridge fatigue damage under mixed traffic conditions was explored. The results indicate that the actual fatigue damage of bridges can be evaluated through the superposition of different traffic pattern effects, provided that the pattern classification number fits the fluctuations in traffic flow. It is necessary to ensure the rationality of traffic pattern classification for structures with spans greater than 50 m, as an overly simplistic traffic pattern classification may lead to an underestimation of fatigue damage. The tropospheric storm fronts were found to cause disruptions in the propagations of VHF (Very High Frequency) radio signals, elevating their signal levels. This is especially important for VHF radio navigation systems, such as VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range), used for naval, airborne and terrestrial transportation, and as the assisting navigation aids for the smaller vehicles forming the Internet of Drones. This article describes this disruptive phenomenon analytically and shows an experimental verification of the developed formula, presenting the increase in relative VHF signal range by ~1.8 times with decreasing tropospheric refraction. Contrary to popular VHF propagation models, largely averaged and statistics-based, the shown formula can be used simultaneously with meteorological predictions, contributing significantly to the mitigation of radio navigation issues related to stormy weather in the operative range of the Internet of Drones. Ontologies are essential tools for representing, organizing, and sharing knowledge across various domains. This study presents a methodology for ontology construction supported by large language models (LLMs), with an initial application in the automotive sector. Specifically, a user preference ontology for adaptive interfaces in autonomous machines was developed using ChatGPT-4o. Based on this case study, the results were generalized into a reusable methodology. The proposed workflow integrates classical ontology engineering methodologies with the generative and analytical capabilities of LLMs. Each phase follows well-established steps: domain definition, term elicitation, class hierarchy construction, property specification, formalization, population, and validation. A key innovation of this approach is the use of a guiding table that translates domain knowledge into structured prompts, ensuring consistency across iterative interactions with the LLM. Human experts play a continuous role throughout the process, refining definitions, resolving ambiguities, and validating outputs. The ontology was evaluated in terms of logical consistency, structural properties, semantic accuracy, and inferential completeness, confirming its correctness and coherence. Additional validation through SPARQL queries demonstrated its reasoning capabilities. This methodology is generalizable to other domains, if domain experts adapt the guiding table to the specific context. Despite the support provided by LLMs, domain expertise remains essential to guarantee conceptual rigor and practical relevance. Full article

This study investigated the interplay of bodily degrees of freedom (DoFs) governing the collective variable comprising the center of pressure (CoP) and center of mass (CoM) in postural control through the analytical lens of multiplicative interactions across scales. We employed a task combination involving a wobble board, introducing mechanical instability mainly along the mediolateral (ML) axis and the Trail Making Task (TMT), which imposes precise visual demands primarily along the anteroposterior (AP) axis. Using Multiscale Regression Analysis (MRA), a novel analytical method rooted in Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA), we scrutinized CoP-to-CoM and CoM-to-CoP effects across multiple timescales ranging from 100ms to 10s. CoP was computed from ground reaction forces recorded via a force plate, and CoM was derived from full-body 3D motion capture using a biomechanical model. We found that the wobble board attenuated CoM-to-CoP effects across timescales ranging from 100to400ms. Further analysis revealed nuanced changes: while there was an overall reduction, this encompassed an accentuation of CoM-to-CoP effects along the AP axis and a decrease along the ML axis. Importantly, these alterations in CoP’s responses to CoM movements outweighed any nonsignificant effects attributable to the TMT. CoM exhibited no sensitivity to CoP movements, regardless of the visual and mechanical task demands. In addition to identifying the characteristic timescales associated with bodily DoFs in facilitating upright posture, our findings underscore the critical significance of directionally challenging biomechanical constraints, particularly evident in the amplification of CoP-to-CoM effects along the AP axis in response to ML instability. These results underscore the potential of wobble board training to enhance the coordinative and compensatory responses of bodily DoFs to the shifting CoM by prompting appropriate adjustments in CoP, thereby suggesting their application for reinstating healthy CoM–CoP dynamics in clinical populations with postural deficits. Environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs) represent a class of long-lived, redox-active species with half lives spanning minutes to months. Emerging as critical environmental pollutants, EPFRs pose significant risks due to their persistence, potential for bioaccumulation, and adverse effects on ecosystems and human health. This review critically synthesizes recent advancements in understanding EPFR formation mechanisms, analytical detection methodologies, environmental distribution patterns, and toxicological impacts. While progress has been made in characterization techniques, challenges persist—particularly in overcoming limitations of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and spin-trapping methods in complex environmental matrices. Key knowledge gaps remain, including molecular-level dynamics of EPFR formation, long-term environmental fate under varying geochemical conditions, and quantitative relationships between chronic EPFR exposure and health outcomes. Future research priorities could focus on: (1) atomic-scale mechanistic investigations using advanced computational modeling to resolve formation pathways; (2) development of next-generation detection tools to improve sensitivity and spatial resolution; and (3) integration of EPFR data into region-specific air-quality indices to enhance risk assessment and inform mitigation strategies. Addressing these gaps will advance our capacity to mitigate EPFR persistence and safeguard environmental and public health. Full article

Background/Objectives: The Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK-STAT) signaling pathway is a critical mediator of immune regulation, inflammation, and cancer progression. Although implicated in colorectal cancer (CRC) pathogenesis, its molecular heterogeneity and clinical significance remain insufficiently characterized—particularly within early-onset CRC (EOCRC) and across diverse treatment and demographic contexts. We present AI-HOPE-JAK-STAT, a novel conversational artificial intelligence platform built to enable the real-time, natural language-driven exploration of JAK/STAT pathway alterations in CRC. The platform integrates clinical, genomic, and treatment data to support dynamic, hypothesis-generating analyses for precision oncology. Methods: AI-HOPE-JAK-STAT combines large language models (LLMs), a natural language-to-code engine, and harmonized public CRC datasets from cBioPortal. Users define analytical queries in plain English, which are translated into executable code for cohort selection, survival analysis, odds ratio testing, and mutation profiling. To validate the platform, we replicated known associations involving JAK1, JAK3, and STAT3 mutations. Additional exploratory analyses examined age, treatment exposure, tumor stage, and anatomical site. Results: The platform recapitulated established trends, including improved survival among EOCRC patients with JAK/STAT pathway alterations. In FOLFOX-treated CRC cohorts, JAK/STAT-altered tumors were associated with significantly enhanced overall survival (p < 0.0001). Stratification by age revealed survival advantages in younger (age < 50) patients with JAK/STAT mutations (p = 0.0379). STAT5B mutations were enriched in colon adenocarcinoma and correlated with significantly more favorable trends (p = 0.0000). Conversely, JAK1 mutations in microsatellite-stable tumors did not affect survival, emphasizing the value of molecular context. Finally, JAK3-mutated tumors diagnosed at Stage I–III showed superior survival compared to Stage IV cases (p = 0.00001), reinforcing stage as a dominant clinical determinant. Conclusions: AI-HOPE-JAK-STAT establishes a new standard for pathway-level interrogation in CRC by empowering users to generate and test clinically meaningful hypotheses without coding expertise. This system enhances access to precision oncology analyses and supports the scalable, real-time discovery of survival trends, mutational associations, and treatment-response patterns across stratified patient cohorts. With the rapid development of sports analytics and artificial intelligence, accurate human pose estimation in badminton is becoming increasingly important. However, challenges such as the lack of domain-specific datasets and the complexity of athletes’ movements continue to hinder progress in this area. To address these issues, we propose an enhanced pose estimation framework tailored to badminton players, built upon an improved YOLOv8-Pose architecture. In particular, we introduce an efficient local attention (ELA) mechanism that effectively captures fine-grained spatial dependencies and contextual information, thereby significantly improving the keypoint localization accuracy and overall pose estimation performance. To support this study, we construct a dedicated badminton pose dataset comprising 4000 manually annotated samples, captured using a Microsoft Kinect v2 camera. The raw data undergo careful processing and refinement through a combination of depth-assisted annotation and visual inspection to ensure high-quality ground truth keypoints. Furthermore, we conduct an in-depth comparative analysis of multiple attention modules and their integration strategies within the network, offering generalizable insights to enhance pose estimation models in other sports domains. The experimental results show that the proposed ELA-enhanced YOLOv8-Pose model consistently achieves superior accuracy across multiple evaluation metrics, including the mean squared error (MSE), object keypoint similarity (OKS), and percentage of correct keypoints (PCK), highlighting its effectiveness and potential for broader applications in sports vision tasks. In this study, a novel shape memory alloy actuated bearing active preload system (SMA-BAPS) was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. SMA actuators placed in a single or antagonistic configuration were employed to drive the screw pair and thus fulfill one-way or bidirectional preload adjustment. Moreover, the self-locking screw pair was used to maintain the bearing preload without external energy input. To determine the parameters of screw pair and SMA actuators, a detailed design process was conducted based on analytical models of the proposed system. Finally, a screw pair with a lead of 3 mm and SMA actuators with a diameter of 0.5 mm and a length of 130 mm were adopted. Prototype tests were conducted to validate and evaluate the performance of the preload adjustment with the SMA-BAPS. The resistive torque and the natural frequency of spindles were recorded to represent the preload level of the bearing. Through the performance tests, the SMA-BAPS induced a maximum 47% variation in the resistive torque and a 20% variation in the spindle’s natural frequency. The response time of the SMA-BAPS was less than 5 s when the heating current of 5 A was applied on the SMA actuator. This design highlighted the compact size, quick response, as well as the bidirectional preload adjustment, representing its potential use in aerospace mechanisms and advanced motors. Full article

Decision management is the systems engineering life cycle process for making program/system decisions. The purpose of the decision management process is: “…to provide a structured, analytical framework for objectively identifying, characterizing and evaluating a set of alternatives for a decision at any point in the life cycle and select the most beneficial course of action”. Systems engineers and systems analysts need to inform decisions in a digital engineering environment. This paper describes a Decision Analysis Data Model (DADM) developed in model-based systems engineering software to provide the process, methods, models, and data to support decision management. DADM can support digital engineering for waterfall, spiral, and agile development processes. This paper describes the decision management processes and provides the definition of the data elements. DADM is based on ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, the INCOSE SE Handbook, the SE Body of Knowledge, the Data Management Body of Knowledge, systems engineering textbooks, and journal articles. The DADM was developed to establish a decision management process and data definitions that organizations and programs can tailor for their system life cycles and processes. The DADM can also be used to assess organizational processes and decision quality. Full article

In this study, a new fibre combination for an interlayer hybrid fibre-reinforced polymer laminate was investigated to achieve pseudo-ductile behaviour in tensile tests. The chosen high-strain fibre for this purpose was S-Glass, and the low-strain fibre was flax. These materials were chosen because of their relatively low environmental impact compared to carbon/carbon and carbon/glass hybrids. An analytical model was used to find an ideal combination of the two materials. With that model, the expected stress–strain relation could also be predicted analytically. The modelling was based on preliminary tensile tests of the two basic components investigated in this research: unidirectional laminates reinforced with either flax fibres or S-Glass fibres. Hybrid specimens were then designed, produced in a heat-assisted pressing process, and subjected to tensile tests. The strain measurement was performed using distributed fibre optic sensing. Ultimately, it was possible to obtain repeatable pseudo-ductile stress–strain behaviour with the chosen hybrid when the specimens were subjected to quasi-static uniaxial tension in the direction of the fibres. The intended damage-mode, consisting of a controlled delamination at the flax-fibre/glass-fibre interface after the flax fibres failed, followed by a load transfer to the glass fibre layers, was successfully achieved. The pseudo-ductile strain averaged 0.52% with a standard deviation of 0.09%, and the average load reserve after delamination was 145.5 MPa with a standard deviation of 48.5 MPa. The integrated fibre optic sensors allowed us to monitor and verify the damage process with increasing strain and load. Finally, the analytical model was compared to the measurements and was partially modified by neglecting the Weibull strength distribution of the high-strain material. Full article
