Cover Story: The future of non-road mobile machinery is driven by stricter emission rules and the need for higher energy efficiency. While electric powertrains offer well-defined advantages over internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems remain a major source of losses and are often kept unchanged in retrofit solutions. This work investigates how to improve the efficiency of a battery-powered material handler obtained by retrofitting an existing machine while preserving its original load-sensing hydraulic architecture. Using a validated simulation model, three novel control strategies are proposed for the electric motor and hydraulic pump. The strategies aim to exploit electrification benefits without complex optimization or costly redesign, making them more suitable for small- and medium-sized enterprises.
