Cover Story: Isolated oceanic islands and archipelagos are key locations for studying the biological evolution of marine organisms. In the NE Atlantic, the poleward dispersal of tropical species during the last interglacial period is a well-known phenomenon; however, the most probable dispersal route remains debates. In this study, we analyzed the Atlantic and Mediterranean last-interglacial fossil records and compared the present-day geographic distribution of shallow-water marine molluscs with their distribution during the last interglacial episode, aiming to detect range shifts. We found that dispersal occurred within a restricted “window of opportunity” associated with the end of glacial Termination II and/or the onset of the last interglacial, and that the most probable source region for the dispersing tropical species was Cabo Verde. View this paper
