2026 April - 114 articles

Cover Story: Dark current sets the noise floor of photodiodes and limits sensitivity in low light. This review analyses the mechanisms responsible for it: diffusion, Shockley–Read–Hall generation, trap-assisted and band-to-band tunneling, and surface leakage. It then examines the strategies that suppress them, including thermal management, surface passivation (notably ALD Al2O3), guard ring designs, gettering and defect control, doping optimization and bias management. Advanced concepts such as pinned photodiodes and black silicon are also considered, across silicon, germanium, III-V and emerging materials, with applications in near-infrared detection, CMOS imaging, SPADs and Time-of-Flight systems. Sora (OpenAI) image-generation tools were used to create and refine the scientific cover illustration based on our research concept. View this paper
