Piezoelectric Actuators and Motors: From Theory to Applications
This special issue belongs to the section “A:Physics“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
As core components of high-energy conversion piezoelectric devices, piezoelectric actuators and motors have garnered immense attention in both academic and engineering circles due to their inherent advantages of high precision, fast response, compact structure, and low energy consumption. From fundamental scientific research to industrial engineering applications, these devices have become indispensable in driving technological innovation across multiple fields, addressing critical needs for miniaturization, intelligence, and high reliability in modern equipment. This Special Issue focuses on the frontier progress and practical demands of piezoelectric actuators and motors, aiming to build a high-quality academic exchange platform for researchers and engineers worldwide. We invite contributions that highlight theoretical breakthroughs, including advanced modeling of piezoelectric effects, nonlinear dynamic analysis, and multi-physical field coupling mechanisms. Structural innovation is another key focus, covering novel design concepts such as flexible structures, integrated architectures, and bio-inspired configurations that enhance adaptability to complex working environments. Additionally, we welcome studies on performance optimization strategies, such as improving displacement output, load capacity, energy conversion efficiency, and environmental stability (e.g., temperature and humidity resistance). The application-oriented nature of this Special Issue is emphasized through case studies across diverse fields. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, piezoelectric actuators in micro/nano-manipulation systems for precision manufacturing, piezoelectric motors in aerospace and automotive engineering for lightweight drive solutions, miniaturized piezoelectric actuators in biomedical devices (e.g., drug delivery systems and surgical robots), and high-power piezoelectric motors in industrial automation for high-precision positioning. These case studies will fully demonstrate the strong technical adaptability of piezoelectric actuators and motors, as well as their enormous potential in emerging areas such as flexible electronics, smart robotics, and renewable energy systems. By integrating theoretical insights with engineering practice, this Special Issue seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application, promoting the transfer of innovative technologies into practical products.
We encourage submissions of original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and technical notes that reflect cutting-edge academic achievements and significant engineering application value. This Special Issue will serve as an important reference for education and knowledge dissemination in the field, while also facilitating the exchange of high-quality academic results to drive the sustainable development of piezoelectric actuator and motor technologies. We look forward to your valuable contributions that will enrich the academic landscape and advance the practical application of piezoelectric actuators and motors.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Micromachines is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2100 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
