This research study conducts a computational analysis of a two-terminal (2T) Perovskite-on-silicon (PVK-Si) solar cell with a tandem configuration. The motivation for this analysis arises from the outstanding potential of PVK-Si solar cells to surpass the efficiency limitations of conventional photovoltaic technology. The tandem configuration utilizes a combination of CsSnBr3 in the top sub-cell and crystalline silicon (c-Si) in the bottom sub-cell. After optimizing parameters of the top sub-cell (FTO/TiO2/CsSnBr3/rGO/Au), which included the thicknesses of CsSnBr3 (500 nm), TiO2 (40 nm), rGO (50 nm), the interface defects (1013 cm−2), and the bandgap of CsSnBr3 (1.78 eV), the PVK-Si tandem device was simulated. As a result, the top CsSnBr3 sub-cell achieved an efficiency of 21.62%, while the bottom silicon sub-cell achieved an efficiency of 23.48%. Subsequently, the sub-cells were interconnected in series using filtered spectra and current-density matching. After interpolating the J-V curves, the tandem exhibited a global efficiency of 29.76%, a fill factor (FF) of 85.30%, a matched current density (JSC) of 19.02 mA/cm2, and an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.83 V. The EQE results confirmed efficient photon management via complementary sub-cell absorption. The performance is competitive with experimental lead-based tandems and exceeds that of current lead-free simulations. Therefore, this research proposes a viable pathway for the development of non-toxic, cost-effective tandem solar systems with manufacturing capabilities. Full article

Dehydroshikimate (DHS) dehydratase (DSD) catalyzes the conversion of DHS into 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid (3,4-DHBA), a compound with promising applications across various industries. The DSD from Podospora anserina (DSDPa) was characterized and its catalytic properties were compared with those of previously investigated enzymes, AsbF (Bacillus thuringiensis), Qa-4 (Neurospora crassa), and QsuB (Corynebacterium glutamicum), both in vitro and in vivo using tube fermentation. Escherichia coli and C. glutamicum were used as platforms to construct model 3,4-DHBA producers. To increase DHS availability in both hosts, shikimate dehydrogenase AroE was inactivated, and the plasmid pVS7-aroG4, encoding 3-deoxy-D-arabinoheptulosonate 7-phosphate synthase (E. coli), was introduced. In E. coli, heterologous 3,4-DHBA synthesis was achieved through chromosomal integration of dsd genes. The fungal genes were codon-optimized for this bacterium. The same genes were cloned into the pVK9 vector and introduced into C. glutamicum, where 3,4-DHBA degradation was disrupted (ΔpcaHG). AsbF (kcat ~ 1 s−1) showed poor 3,4-DHBA accumulation in both hosts (1–1.5 g/L). The enzymes with better catalytic characteristics, QsuB (kcat ~ 60 s−1), DSDPa (kcat ~ 125 s−1), and Qa-4 (kcat ~ 220 s−1), provided 5 g/L 3,4-DHBA in E. coli and 3 g/L 3,4-DHBA in C. glutamicum, except for Qa-4. The low production (~1.5 g/L) observed for Qa-4 in C. glutamicum might be attributed to a non-optimal nucleotide sequence rich in codons rare for C. glutamicum. Full article

This work explored an electrochemical approach for synthesizing lanthanum-modified nickel oxide (NiOx:La) as a hole transport layer (HTL) in inverted perovskite solar cells (IPSCs). By varying the La3+ concentration, the chemical, charge transport, structural, and morphological properties of the NiOx:La film and the HTL/PVK interface were evaluated to enhance photovoltaic performance. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed La3+ incorporation, a higher Ni3+/Ni3+ ratio, and a valence band shift, improving p-type conductivity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Mott–Schottky analyses indicated that NiOx:La 0.5% exhibited the lowest resistance and the highest carrier density, correlating with higher recombination resistance. The NiOx:La 0.5% based cell achieved a PCE of 20.08%. XRD and SEM confirmed no significant changes in PVK structure, while photoluminescence extinction demonstrated improved charge extraction. After 50 days, this cell retained 80% of its initial PCE, whereas a pristine NiOx device retained 75%. Hyperspectral imaging revealed lower optical absorption loss and better homogeneity. These results highlight NiOx:La as a promising HTL for efficient and stable IPSCs. Full article

Phosphorus is a macronutrient crucially important for plant growth and development; its limited amount in soil and water poses bewildering concerns amongst agronomists. Externally applied phosphorus fertilizers can fulfil crops’ phosphorus needs throughout essential growth stages; however, the overapplication of phosphorus fertilizers leads to diminished phosphorus acquisition efficiency (PAE), disrupts the delicate balance of nutrients in soil and water, leads to deficiencies in other essential elements, poses significant environmental risks, and accelerates the loss of phosphorus mineral supplies. Moreover, much of the applied phosphorus may become fixed as insoluble phosphates by combining with calcium, iron, aluminum, manganese, etc., present in soil, making it unavailable for the plants. Phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) can render insoluble phosphate accessible to plants by solubilization and mineralization, hence enhancing crop yields while ensuring environmental sustainability. Earthworms are vital soil invertebrates that interact continuously with soil and soil microorganisms and play an essential role in maintaining soil fertility. The present study aims to screen and identify potential phosphate solubilizing bacteria from the intestinal tract of the earthworm Aporrectodea rosea. The experimental results indicate that the strain PSEG-1 was effective in phosphate solubilization, with a solubilization index of 1.6 in Pikovskaya (PVK)’s medium. The strain produced organic acid in the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRIP)’s medium. Phenotypic and genotypic studies of the isolate showed that the strain PSEG-1 belongs to Klebsiella variicola. Our results suggest that the vermi-bacterial strain Klebsiella variicola PSEG-1 possesses intrinsic abilities to solubilize phosphate, which could be exploited for formulating potential microbial biofertilizers to enhance crop production. Organic solid-state lasers are highly promising devices known for their low-cost fabrication processes and compact sizes and the tunability of their emission spectrum. These lasers are in high demand across various industries including biomedicine, sensors, communications, spectroscopy, and military applications. A key requirement for light-emitting materials used in a light-amplifying medium is a low threshold value of the excitation energy of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE). A newly synthesized non-symmetric red-light-emitting laser dye, Ethyl 2-(2-(4-(bis(2-(trityloxy)ethyl)amino)styryl)-6-tert butyl-4H-pyran-4-ylidene)-2-cyanoacetate (KTB), has shown great promise in meeting this requirement. KTB, with its attached bulky trityloxyethyl groups, has the ability to form amorphous thin films from a solution using a wet-casting method. Recent experiments have demonstrated that KTB exhibits a low ASE threshold value. This study focused on investigating the optical and amplified spontaneous emission properties of KTB in poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), polysulfone (PSU), and polystyrene (PS) matrices at various concentrations. The results showed that as the concentration of the dye increased, a redshift of the photoluminescence and ASE spectra occurred due to the solid-state solvation effect. The lowest ASE threshold value of 9 µJ/cm2 was achieved with a 20 wt% concentration of KTB in a PVK matrix, making it one of the lowest excitation threshold energies reported to date. Full article

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are considered the most promising photovoltaic devices to replace silicon-based solar cells because of their low preparation cost and high photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE). Reducing defects in perovskite films is an effective means to improve the efficiency of PSCs. In this paper, a lead chelator was selected and mixed into hole transport layers (HTLs) to design and prepare mesoporous PSCs with the structure of ITO/PTAA(BCP)/Al2O3/PVK/PCBM/BCP/Ag, and its modification effect on the buried interface at the bottom of the perovskite layer in the mesoporous structure was explored. The experimental results show that in the presence of mesoporous alumina, the lead chelator can still play a role in modifying the bottom of the perovskite film. The use of lead chelator as passivation material added to the HTL can effectively reduce the residue of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and decrease the defects at the bottom of the perovskite film, which dramatically improves the device performance. The PCE of the device is increased from 18.03% to 20.78%, which is an increase of 15%. The work in this paper provides an effective method to enhance the performance of PSCs. Full article

The recombination of charges and thermal excitation of carriers at the interface between methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (PVK) and the carbon electrode are crucial factors that affect the optoelectronic performance of carbon-based hole transport layer (HTL)-free perovskite photodetectors. In this work, a method was employed to introduce SnS quantum dots (QDs) on the back surface of perovskite, which passivated the defect states on the back surface of perovskite and addressed the energy-level mismatch issue between perovskite and carbon electrode. Performance testing of the QDs and the photodetector revealed that SnS QDs possess energy-level structures that are well matched with perovskite and have high absorption coefficients. The incorporation of these QDs into the interface layer effectively suppresses the dark current of the photodetector and greatly enhances the utilization of incident light. The experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of SnS QDs reduces the dark current by an order of magnitude compared to the pristine device at 0 V bias and increases the responsivity by 10%. The optimized photodetector exhibits a wide spectral response range (350 nm to 750 nm), high responsivity (0.32 A/W at 500 nm), and high specific detectivity (>1 × 1012 Jones). Full article

The poor film stability of Sn-Pb mixed perovskite film and the mismatched interface energy levels pose significant challenges in enhancing the efficiency of tin–lead (Sn-Pb) mixed perovskite solar cells. In this study, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is introduced into the PVK perovskite precursor solution, effectively enhancing the overall stability of the film. This improvement is achieved through the formation of robust coordination bonds between the carbonyl (C=O) in the pyrrole ring and the undercoordinated SnII and PbII, thereby facilitating the passivation of defects. Furthermore, the introduction of PVP inhibits the oxidation of tin (Sn), thereby enhancing the n-type characteristics of the perovskite film. This adjustment in the energy level of the PVK perovskite film proves instrumental in reducing interface energy loss, subsequently improving interface charge transfer and mitigating device recombination. Consequently, perovskite solar cells incorporating PVP achieve an outstanding champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.31%. Full article

For the first time, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on bis(8-hydroxyquinoline) zinc with a styryl group (ZnStq) dispersed in poly(N-vinylcarbazole) matrix (ZnStq_R:PVK, where R = H, Cl, OCH3) were fabricated. The ZnStq_R:PVK films made via the spin-coating method were used as the active layer in these devices. The produced OLEDs showed strong electroluminescence with yellow emissions at 590, 587 and 578 nm for the ZnStq_H:PVK, ZnStq_Cl:PVK and ZnStq_OCH3:PVK, respectively. For all the studied thin films, the main photoluminescence emission bands were observed between 565 and 571 nm. The OLED with the ZnStq_OCH3:PVK layer with a narrow electroluminescence spectrum was found to have sufficient color purity to produce ultra-high-resolution displays with reduced power consumption (full width at half maximum of 59 nm, maximum brightness of 2244 cd/m2 and maximum current efficiency of 1.24 cd/A, with a turn-on voltage of 6.94 V and a threshold voltage of 7.35 V). To characterize the photophysical properties of the active layer, the ZnStq_R:PVK layers samples were additionally deposited on glass and silicon substrates. We found that the obtained results predestine ZnStq_R:PVK layers for use in the lighting industry in the future. Full article

This research aims to optimize the efficiency of the device structures by introducing the novel double perovskite absorber layer (PAL). The perovskite solar cell (PSC) has higher efficiency with both lead perovskite (PVK), i.e., methylammonium tin iodide (MASnI3) and Caseium tin germanium iodide (CsSnGeI3). The current simulation uses Spiro-OMeTAD as the hole transport layer (HTL) and TiO2 as an electron transport layer (ETL) to sandwich the PVK layers of MASnI3 and CsSnGeI3, which have precise bandgaps of 1.3 eV and 1.5 eV. The exclusive results of the precise modeling technique for organic/inorganic PVK-based photovoltaic solar cells under the illumination of AM1.5 for distinctive device architectures are shown in the present work. Influence of defect density (DD) is also considered during simulation that revealed the best PSC parameters with JSC of 31.41 mA/cm2, VOC of 1.215 V, FF of nearly 82.62% and the highest efficiency of 31.53% at the combined DD of 1.0 × 1014 cm−3. The influence of temperature on device performance, which showed a reduction in PV parameters at elevated temperature, is also evaluated. A steeper temperature gradient with an average efficiency of −0.0265%/K for the optimized PSC is observed. The novel grading technique helps in achieving efficiency of more than 31% for the optimized device. As a result of the detailed examination of the total DD and temperature dependency of the simulated device, structures are also studied simultaneously. Full article

Using palladium-catalyzed Suzuki polycondensation, we synthesized new light-emitting fluorene copolymers containing the dicyano derivatives of stilbene and phenanthrene and characterized them by gel permeation chromatography, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, spectrofluorimetry, and cyclic voltammetry. The photoluminescence spectra of the synthesized polymers show significant energy transfer from the fluorene segments to the dicyanostilbene and 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene units, which is in agreement with the data of theoretical calculations. OLEDs based on these polymers were fabricated with an ITO/PEDOT-PSS (35 nm)/p-TPD (30 nm)/PVK (5 nm)/light emitting layer (70–75 nm)/PF-PO (20 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (80 nm) configuration. Examination of their electroluminescence revealed that copolymers of fluorene with dicyanostilbene show yellow-green luminescence, while polymers with 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene have a greenish-blue emission. The 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene units have a more rigid structure compared to dicyanostilbene and, in OLEDs based on them, an increase in maximum brightness is observed with an increase in the content of the additive to the polymer chain. In particular, the device using fluorene copolymer with 9,10-dicyanophenanthrene (2.5 mol%) exhibited a maximum brightness of 9230 cd/m2 and a maximum current efficiency of 3.33 cd/A. Full article

Organometallic halide perovskite (PVK)-based solar cells (PSC) have gained significant popularity owing to their efficiency, adaptability, and versatility. However, the presence of lead in conventional PVK poses environmental risks and hinders effective commercialization. Although lead-free PVK solar cells have been developed, their conversion efficiency is limited due to intrinsic losses. To address this challenge, we present a simulation study focusing on methylammonium tin bromide (MASnBr3) as an alternative material. In our investigation, the MASnBr3 layers are strategically placed between a copper iodide (CuI)-based hole transporting material (HTM) and a zinc oxide (ZnO)-based electron transporting material (ETM). We optimize the active layer thickness, operating temperature, defect density analysis, and series resistances to assess device performance. Furthermore, we employ contour mapping, considering both thickness and defect density, for a detailed investigation. Our primary objective is to achieve unprecedented efficiency in lead-free MASnBr3-based PSCs. Remarkably, our study achieves the highest JSC (short-circuit current density) of 34.09 mA/cm2, VOC (open-circuit voltage) of 1.15 V, FF (fill factor) of 82.06%, and optimized conversion efficiency of 32.19%. These advancements in conversion efficiency pave the way for the development of lead-free PVK solar cells in the desired direction. Full article

As Si single-junction technology is approaching its Shockley–Queisser theoretical limit, relevant efforts are being expended towards the development of multi-junction modules. In this work, we employ an optical model based on Monte Carlo ray tracing to compare four different multi-junction modules in a voltage-matched two-terminal (VM2T) configuration. In particular, we took into consideration the VM2T coupling of crystalline silicon cells with CuInxGa1-xSe2 (CIGS), CdTe, GaAs and perovskite (PVK) solar cells. We optimized the thicknesses of each layer in the top sub-module and determined the performance of VM2T modules in the Shockley–Queisser theoretical limit. We also considered the possibility of using modules in which the top Si surface is flat to determine the performance drop due to the absence of the texturization on the top Si surface. Moreover, we determined the optimal bandgap energy of PVK in a VM2T PVK/Si module as well as the highest efficiency achievable. Lastly, we show that when using state-of-the-art cells, the highest VM2T efficiency achievable for the considered materials is 34.2% under standard test conditions. Full article
