Cover Story: The use of virtual reality for pilot flight training, whether as a stand-alone device or to augment a conventional simulator, has gained attention in recent years. The primary purported benefit is increased immersion, with particular benefits for visuospatial awareness. This would appear to offer little advantage in the training of instrument-flying skills, where only the aircraft’s instrumentation needs to be accurately rendered. However, given the intention toward adoption of the technology, instrument flight training is likely to be one of its uses. A quasi-randomised separate-sample pre/post-test study evaluated a low-cost VR simulator in transferring the flying skills required to conduct an ILS approach with 44 participants. Results indicate improvement based on operational (rrb = 0.508) and synthetic (g = 0.844) metrics. View this paper
