Cover Story: Small satellites require compact, lightweight, and multifunctional instruments capable of supporting increasingly demanding space missions. This work presents the design and multidisciplinary validation of a miniaturized dual-purpose optical instrument able to operate simultaneously as a star tracker and as a space debris detection camera. The system combines commercial off-the-shelf components with a custom three-vane optical baffle optimized for stray-light suppression. Optical ray-tracing, thermal modelling, and structural finite-element simulations demonstrated reliable performance under representative orbital conditions, enabling star and debris detection up to approximately magnitude 5.8. The proposed instrument offers a low-mass and cost-effective solution for next-generation small-satellite navigation and space situational awareness. View this paper
