2026 October - 119 articles

Cover Story: Spacecrafts are exposed to micrometeoroids and orbital debris travelling at several kilometres per second. Ground testing of shielding relies on light-gas guns, which cannot cover the full range of projectile sizes and impact velocities. Laser-induced shocks offer an alternative: a nanosecond laser pulse vaporises a thin surface layer, and the expanding plasma drives into the target a shock wave comparable to that of a hypervelocity impact. This study assesses that analogy numerically for a CFRP bumper and an Al/CFRP hybrid shield. Laser pressure pulses were identified that reproduce the crater, perforation and delamination damage of LS-DYNA impact models validated against experiments. Inverted ablation-pressure scaling laws show that the required laser parameters lie within reach of existing high-power facilities, supporting laser shocks as a laboratory complement to gas-gun testing. View this paper
