Cover Story: Wearable sensors hold great promise for biomechanical research, but integrating custom sensor data with optical motion capture (mocap) systems has long required complex synchronization workflows. This work presents a wireless, portable data acquisition system that enables seamless integration of custom wearable sensor data directly into a mocap data stream. The system captures all data within a single unified workflow by reconstructing sensor signals as analog voltages at the mocap interface. This eliminates the need for post hoc alignment while preserving full freedom of movement for human subjects. The complete system achieves a typical end-to-end latency of 6 ms, with hardware and firmware available open-source for adaptation by the wider research community. View this paper
