Cover Story: Rammed earth construction faces economic barriers despite ecological benefits, mainly due to labor-intensive manual work and formwork installation. Robotic fabrication may improve efficiency by reducing construction time and labor demand. This study compares environmental impacts of manual and robotic in situ fabrication of unstabilized rammed earth walls using life cycle assessment. Results show robotic construction is preferable in the construction phase. Compared with the manual scenario, the robotic scenario reduces impacts by 9–97%, mainly through lower waste and less formwork. GWP100-total decreases by 28% and embodied energy (EE) by 68%. Further optimizations, including shorter transport distances, local loam sourcing, reduced packaging, and renewable energy use, reduce GWP100-total and EE by up to 83% and 90%, respectively. View this paper
