Cover Story: Microalgae have long been utilized as food and feed, and, more recently, fuel. When microalgae was adapted for fuel production, it was necessary to ensure that the energy required to do this was not more than what was produced. In this article, the Energy Profit Ratio (EPR) was used as the parameter for these calculations. The EPR is the ratio between energy produced and energy consumed with the aim to work out whether the energy required is lower, equal to, or higher than the energy produced. This was a case study in a pilot project located in Minamisoma City in the Fukushima Prefecture of Japan. View this paper
