Macrophages must preserve genome stability while performing immune and tissue-supporting functions that can themselves induce DNA damage or interfere with genome maintenance. Inflammatory metabolism produces reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, extensive transcription imposes topological and transcription-associated stress, and proliferative responses generate replication stress. At the same time, studies of monocyte-derived macrophages and macrophage-like differentiation models show selective changes in DNA repair capacity: base excision repair (BER)/single-strand break (SSB) repair and DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK)-dependent double-strand break (DSB) repair are enhanced, whereas global nucleotide excision repair (NER) can be attenuated while repair is preferentially retained in transcriptionally active regions. When these protective mechanisms fail, persistent DNA damage can promote apoptosis or senescence, alter inflammatory signaling and extracellular communication, and modify self-antigen presentation. Here, we focus on differentiation-associated changes in DNA repair capacity and genome maintenance during inflammatory activation, drawing on selected tissue and disease models. We also discuss emerging evidence that circadian regulation of metabolism and redox activity may add a temporal dimension to this balance. Defining how pathway-specific DNA repair capacity is matched to state-dependent genotoxic challenges will clarify how genome stability supports immune homeostasis and how its disruption contributes to inflammatory dysfunction. Background/Objectives: Digital technologies have transformed how young adults in romantic relationships communicate, develop intimacy, and manage control. Although these technologies facilitate connection, they may enable surveillance, control, and aggression. This study examined associations of psychological distress and romantic love myths with digital dating violence while controlling for problematic social media use. Methods: This observational, cross-sectional study included 336 university students aged 18–25 years. Participants completed the Cyber-Violence in Adolescent Couples Scale, adapted for young adults (Cib-VPA), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21), the Scale of Myths of Romantic Love (SMRL), and the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS). Differences between men and women, partial correlations, pooled regression models testing the Sex × DASS-21 × SMRL interaction, and sex-stratified regression models were examined. Results: Women reported higher levels of anxiety, depression, stress, psychological distress, cybercontrol victimization, cyberaggression victimization, cybercontrol perpetration, and total victimization. Men showed stronger endorsement of romantic love myths. Formal pooled comparisons indicated that the DASS-21 × SMRL interaction differed by sex for victimization–cyberaggression, perpetration–cybercontrol, and total victimization. Sex-stratified models showed significant interactions for several dimensions of digital dating violence. Simple slopes showed that psychological distress was positively associated with total perpetration among men and women and with total victimization among women when romantic love myth endorsement was high. Conclusions: Psychological distress and romantic love myths appear to be associated with digital dating violence. Prevention programs should support psychological well-being, challenge romantic love myths, and improve recognition of cybercontrol as a form of intimate partner violence. Full article

Objective: On 7 October 2023, Hamas-led militants attacked Israeli communities bordering the Gaza Strip, abducting 251 people, including 201 civilians. Wolfson Medical Center was chosen by Israel’s Ministry of Health to care for repatriated civilians following a hostage release deal. We describe the development and implementation of a multidisciplinary care framework and report the clinical characteristics and short-term hospital outcomes of the repatriated civilians treated within it. Methods: A multidisciplinary framework was developed and implemented to address acute and chronic medical conditions, physical trauma, sexual assault, psychosocial support, and nutritional rehabilitation. Clinical characteristics and short-term hospital outcomes were retrospectively extracted from the electronic medical records. Results: Between 24 November and 1 December 2023, we treated 10 repatriated female hostages (median age 67 years, range 29–85 years) held captive for 48–55 days. They suffered physical trauma and loss of family members during the 7 October events. Captivity was associated with inadequate nutrition, poor hygiene, physical injuries, psychological distress, and insufficient management of chronic medical conditions. Acute conditions on arrival included rapid atrial fibrillation, heart failure, deep vein thrombosis, endocrine abnormalities, gastrointestinal symptoms and dermatologic conditions. Care required individualized planning, flexibility, and close coordination with national authorities, community health providers, and social services. Conclusions: Our experience highlights the need for comprehensive, coordinated care frameworks that not only address the medical, psychological, and social complexities of early recovery and reintegration but also ensure effective oversight and training of the medical teams involved. Information architecture may shape harmful conduct in dynamic multi-agent systems, yet its relationship to objectively measured misrepresentation remains unclear. We examine seller-only communication and market-wide public history in a repeated hidden-quality market populated by 12 GPT-4o-mini seller agents and 12 buyer agents over 20 rounds. The submitted five-replicate pilot and a fresh primary-wording replication batch with twenty replicates per condition compared five conditions. Deceptive selling is operationalized solely as observable quality overstatement, defined as listing an item above its source-quality tier; strategic intent is not inferred. The primary outcome is the fraction of unseeded sellers making at least one false quality claim. With intervention sellers held fixed, the fresh primary-wording replication batch showed mean forum-associated prevalence differences of 0.850 under private history and 0.483 under market-wide public history. These contrasts apply only to intervention-present markets because the design does not include a forum condition without intervention sellers. Two seller-listing paraphrases produced materially different private-history contrasts, indicating prompt sensitivity rather than wording invariance. Across the submitted pilot, seller conduct, realized buyer harm, and market activity diverged. These descriptive results motivate multi-agent safety evaluations that jointly examine information architecture, harmful conduct, and system utility. They do not identify message versus prompt mechanisms, buyer- versus seller-side public-history mechanisms, intent, or seed-to-peer transmission. Full article

Outbreaks of the sharp-toothed bark beetle, Ips acuminatus, have become increasingly frequent across Europe, yet little is known about how natural enemy communities vary between bark beetle population phases. This study compared the composition, diversity, emergence patterns, and relationships of natural enemies associated with I. acuminatus in two Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forest areas representing endemic and post-outbreak population conditions in Latvia. Bark beetle colonized stem sections were collected and maintained under controlled laboratory conditions to quantify emerging insects. Community composition and diversity were analysed, and linear mixed-effects models were used to evaluate relationships between bark beetle and natural enemy densities. A total of 5468 insects representing 21 taxa emerged, including 12 natural enemy taxa. Natural enemy community composition and Shannon diversity were similar between areas/populations. However, the relationship between densities of I. acuminatus and natural enemies differed significantly between the two areas (p = 0.002), with a substantially stronger positive relationship detected in the one with an endemic population. Under laboratory conditions, parasitoids emerged synchronously with the I. acuminatus, whereas predator emergence peaked later. These findings indicate that compositionally similar natural enemy assemblages can exhibit different density relationships between systems representing contrasting bark beetle population conditions, emphasizing the importance of considering abundance relationships alongside community composition. As the 2030 deadline approaches with most Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets off-track, the global development community faces a critical choice: continue with technocratic indicator-focused implementation or embrace the fundamental transformation the SDGs originally promised. This paper argues that the convergence of planetary health, the wellbeing economy, and systems thinking offers a pathway to restore the SDGs’ transformative potential through community-governed, power-redistributive approaches. Much of current SDG implementation has become a technocratic exercise that obscures power dynamics, ignores Indigenous knowledge systems, and perpetuates growth-oriented economic logic that conflicts with planetary boundaries. This approach treats symptoms rather than root causes while maintaining consultation models that create an illusion of community engagement without redistributing decision-making authority. The wellbeing economy movement and planetary health framework offer complementary lenses for recalibration: the wellbeing economy challenges GDP-focused development by prioritizing collective flourishing within ecological limits, while planetary health reframes development within Earth’s life-support systems. However, translating these frameworks into concrete policy mechanisms requires systems thinking that includes explicit power analysis and centers relational accountability to communities most affected by current systemic failures. A post-2030 agenda must resist fixing the SDGs through more indicators and instead institutionalize community governance, redistribute decision-making power, and co-create implementation tools that communities own and adapt. This requires breaking silos between health, environmental, and economic sectors, while centering Indigenous voices as leaders rather than beneficiaries. The convergence of crises demands courage to chart a new path guided by community wisdom, planetary boundaries, and relational accountability; one that restores not only ecosystems but decision-making power to those who understand that health, economy, and ecology are inseparable. The gut microbiota plays an important role in immune homeostasis, allergic disease pathogenesis, and drug metabolism, potentially influencing therapeutic efficacy and safety. Conversely, pharmacotherapy may modify gut microbial composition and function, creating bidirectional host–drug–microbiome interactions that remain incompletely understood. This narrative review summarises current evidence on interactions between the microbiome and therapies for allergic diseases, focusing on antihistamines, corticosteroids, leukotriene receptor antagonists, and biologic agents. Evidence is evaluated from two complementary perspectives: an exposure axis, relevant mainly to orally administered drugs, and a response axis, particularly applicable to biologic therapies. Direct microbial biotransformation has been demonstrated most convincingly for glucocorticoids, with the organosteroid reductase ABC (OsrABC) pathway of Clostridium steroidoreducens reducing systemic prednisolone exposure in a gnotobiotic model. For H1-antihistamines and leukotriene receptor antagonists, evidence remains limited and inconsistent. The microbiota may also indirectly influence treatment outcomes through effects on epithelial barrier integrity, microbial metabolite production, and immune regulation. Although anti-allergic therapies can alter gut, airway, and skin microbial communities, no validated microbiome signature currently predicts treatment efficacy or safety. Future prospective studies integrating microbiome, metabolome, pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and clinical data are needed to establish reliable biomarkers and support personalised pharmacotherapy for allergic diseases. In addition to its contractile role, skeletal muscle has important secretory functions and communicates with local and distant tissues through myokines, a heterogeneous group of cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, peptides, and extracellular-matrix-associated proteins released by muscle cells. Their production is regulated by contraction, mechanical loading, energy availability, hypoxia, inflammation, injury, and mitochondrial or metabolic stress. Through autocrine, paracrine, and endocrine mechanisms, myokines influence satellite-cell activity, myogenesis, protein turnover, muscle mass, metabolism, mitochondrial function, angiogenesis, immune-cell recruitment, extracellular-matrix remodeling, and inter-organ communication. This review provides a structured overview of current knowledge on the production, regulation, and biological actions of approximately 25 major myokines, with particular emphasis on the strength of evidence supporting their classification as bona fide muscle-derived factors. We distinguish local muscle signaling from changes in circulating concentrations of uncertain tissue origin and highlight the context-dependent nature of myokine actions. The same mediator may support adaptation and repair when transiently and locally produced but contribute to inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, fibrosis, or muscle wasting when signaling is excessive, prolonged, or disease-associated. Defining cellular sources, temporal regulation, receptor availability, and interactions within the muscle secretome will be essential for clarifying physiological relevance and translating myokine biology into biomarkers and therapeutic strategies. What makes an African man, and who determines the boundaries of African manhood? In this article, I interrogate the making of African manhood through the isiXhosa question Yintoni indoda? (What is a man?) with particular attention to queer African men and their cultural belonging. Rather than revisiting whether queerness is compatible with Africanness, I turn the analytical gaze towards manhood itself and ask what happens when a queer African man satisfies culturally recognised dimensions of manhood while transgressing heteronormative expectations of masculinity. Positioned as a conceptual study, I critically bring scholarship on amaXhosa manhood and ulwaluko into conversation with African masculinities, queer theory, belonging, and decolonial thought to examine indoda (man) as a culturally negotiated status shaped by social recognition, responsibility, kinship, cultural participation, and communal belonging. I interrogate the privileging of heterosexuality, marriage, and reproduction as markers of legitimate African manhood and question whether these expectations can be understood outside histories of colonialism and their reconfiguration of African gender and sexual relations. I advance conditional cultural belonging as a conceptual lens for understanding how queer African men can belong to cultural communities even as their recognition as legitimate men remains contingent on heteronormative conformity. Ultimately, I use Yintoni indoda? to rethink the boundaries through which African manhood is culturally produced, policed, and recognised. Full article

The Gospel of John is geographically associated with Judea and Anatolia—regions that, throughout the Hellenistic and Roman periods, formed part of the frontier with the Iranian world. Anatolia preserved important Mazdean traditions well into the Common era, while the budding miϑra cult established itself in Judea around the time the Fourth Gospel was actively being elaborated—most notably at Caesarea Maritima, where an early Christian community coexisted with the party responsible for one of the earliest Mithraea (ca. 80 CE). This article reexamines the Johannine Prologue against the backdrop of Mazdean traditions, such as miϑra’s emergence in the Roman world as δημιουργός, the concept of the incarnate mąϑra (“divine utterance”), and, especially, the Mazdean eschatological figure of the final saošiiaṇt (restorer of creation)—notions that were integrated by the Johannine community through a process of interpretatio Iohannica to articulate its Christology. Rather than influences from Mithraism, which was at the time in its infancy, or direct textual dependence on Mazdean sources, the article appeals to a convergence of geographical, archaeological, chronological, theological, and linguistic evidence for a shared religious environment where the Johannine Prologue creatively assimilated a coherent network of Mazdean concepts into a thoroughly Jewish theological framework. Power-grid inspection requires both high detection reliability and low-latency deployment, yet existing solutions often face a fundamental trade-off between lightweight edge models with limited semantic capability and large multimodal models with high inference cost. To address this issue, we propose GridScope, a cloud-edge collaborative object detection framework for power-grid inspection. GridScope integrates an SLA-aware confidence routing to adaptively coordinate local inference, cloud verification, and dual-channel response according to task priority and detection confidence. To improve communication efficiency, we further design a split-VLM collaborative inference pipeline, in which compact visual features are extracted at the edge and only feature-level representations are transmitted to the cloud for semantic verification. In addition, cloud-side refined predictions are used to periodically optimize the edge detector, forming a continual feedback loop that improves local detection quality over time. Experiments on wildfire and foreign-object intrusion benchmarks demonstrate that GridScope consistently achieves a more favorable accuracy-efficiency trade-off than both lightweight detectors and full VLM baselines. Urban campuses represent complex landscapes comprising buildings, roads, water bodies, and vegetation patches. Differences in spatial structures among landscape microhabitats and levels of human disturbance may influence avian acoustic activity and birdsong soundscape characteristics. However, continuous spatiotemporal dynamics of birdsong soundscapes and differences in acoustic community composition at the campus scale remain insufficiently explored. To address this gap, this study integrates 24 h continuous passive acoustic monitoring across replicated landscape microhabitats with field-validated deep learning-based birdsong identification, enabling diel, spatial, and acoustic-community patterns to be evaluated within a unified fine-scale campus framework. Using the Qingdao Agricultural University campus as a case study, we established 25 monitoring sites from March to May 2026 across five landscape microhabitat types: streamside, lakeshore, green space, building, and edge. Twelve days of 24 h continuous passive acoustic monitoring were conducted, and target bird species were identified using MFCC–based acoustic features combined with the EfficientNet–B0 multi-label classification model, whose field applicability was further evaluated using an independently selected and manually annotated subset of the campus recordings. The results revealed that birdsong soundscapes across different landscape microhabitats exhibited consistent diel rhythms, with the highest avian acoustic activity occurring during the early-morning period. Spatially, avian acoustic activity and the number of detected target bird species were generally higher in streamside-type, lakeshore-type, and green space-type microhabitats than in building-type and edge-type microhabitats. Significant differences in birdsong acoustic community composition were observed among different landscape microhabitats and fixed clock-time periods, showing species-specific spatiotemporal responses. These findings demonstrate the value of species-resolved birdsong soundscape monitoring as a complementary approach for fine-scale ecological assessment and provide site-specific evidence for landscape microhabitat management and bird-friendly planning on urban campuses. Background: The healthcare system of Hong Kong is facing a growing burden arising from chronic diseases and patient demands because of the rapid ageing and healthcare workforce shortage. Primary care is widely recognised as the most cost-effective way in improving health of the people. This study aimed to understand how older adults’ experiences of primary care in Hong Kong may impact the service utilisation and revisit intention of primary care services. Methods: This correlational study used a combination of cluster, purposive, and snowball sampling methods and collected 573 valid responses from Hong Kong residents aged 60 years or above. A modified version of the Primary Care Assessment Tool Chinese Version (PCAT-C), requiring an estimated 15 min to complete, was used to measure the perceived service quality, satisfaction, trust, and revisit intention. Data collections were performed between March 2025 and November 2025. A partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was performed in the statistical software SmartPLS 4.0 to test the relationships of various variables. Results: By analysing the 573 valid samples (Mage: 74.2, SD: 7.3; female: 80.5%) from the 607 total collected responses, ongoing care was revealed as the most influential PCAT factor in both older adults’ perceived service quality (β = 0.368; p < 0.0001) and satisfaction = 0.189; p < 0.0001), while trust (β = 0.265; p < 0.0001) and perceived service quality (β = 0.195, p = 0.001) were found to have positively contributed to older adults’ intention to revisit primary care services among the respective relationships among perceived service quality, satisfaction, and trust towards revisit intention. Conclusions: To enhance the utilisation of primary care among older adults, it is vital to improve their trust, perceived service quality, and satisfaction with primary care providers. One promising way to achieve this goal is to improve ongoing quality of care and people-centred care at the primary care level. Full article

Antimicrobial resistance represents a major One Health challenge affecting human, animal, and environmental health, and responsible antimicrobial use in companion animal medicine has become increasingly important. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on antimicrobial stewardship interventions aimed at improving antibiotic prescribing in small animal veterinary practice. The review discusses the clinical, behavioral, owner-related, organizational, and regulatory factors that influence prescribing decisions, with emphasis on diagnostic uncertainty, access to microbiological testing, communication with pet owners, and practice-level prescribing culture. Key stewardship strategies include evidence-based clinical guidelines, diagnostic stewardship, education and training, audit and feedback, electronic clinical decision-support systems, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, infection prevention, and multifaceted implementation programs. Evidence from predominantly observational and before-and-after studies suggests that these interventions may be associated with reductions in unnecessary antimicrobial prescribing and improvements in prescribing appropriateness, although the strength of causal evidence remains limited. However, further research is needed because current studies differ in methodology, often have short follow-up periods, include limited data from routine primary veterinary practices, and rarely demonstrate a direct reduction in antimicrobial resistance. Future progress will depend on standardized outcome measures, integration of digital health technologies, rapid diagnostics, artificial intelligence, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, and stronger One Health collaboration. Overall, antimicrobial stewardship in companion animal medicine should be regarded as a continuous quality-improvement process designed to preserve antimicrobial efficacy while maintaining optimal patient care. Grounded in Derrick Bell’s Racial Realism and a Critical Race Feminista methodology, this paper examines how a teacher education program (TEP) perpetuated whiteness and racism, and how these structures shape the experiences of preservice teachers of Color. Drawing on group pláticas with two Future Teacher of Color cohorts across two academic years, the findings reveal that the TEP bolstered whiteness and racism through retrenchment on critical and cultural pedagogies; performative diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts; and anti-Blackness. Preservice teachers of Color experienced significant isolation, dismissal, and extra labor. Yet, they resisted, finding community and collective healing. This contributes to the literature supporting preservice teachers of Color and keeps it real by grappling with the permanence of racism to better support future teachers of Color. Full article
