Cover Story: In the central nervous system, connexin 43 (Cx43) is an essential protein responsible for glial communication. Recently, several studies have reported that, in addition to neuronal networks, astrocytes contribute to the regulation of energy balance. Here, we investigate the impact of Cx43 knockdown on the regulation of energy homeostasis by targeting, specifically, the astrocytes of the dorsal vagal complex (DVC). The DVC is a brainstem structure involved in the homeostatic control of energy balance. Our results show that knockdown of glial Cx43 is accompanied by a strong astrocytic and microglial remodeling but a limited alteration of energy metabolism. These results suggest that astrocytic and microglia plasticity may constitute a buffering system that preserves metabolic outputs when glial communication within the DVC is altered. View this paper
