Cover Story: Pistachio acreage is increasing in Spain, but irrigation in new production regions remains undefined. This five-year study in central Spain assessed two irrigation doses on pistachio (cv. Kerman) water relations, yield, and nut quality. The high treatment (H) received 50% more water than the control (C). Soil moisture, stem water potential (Ψs), gas exchange, growth, yield, and nut quality were monitored. During summer, C trees showed more negative Ψs, indicating slight dehydration. H trees produced higher dry weight of split nuts (greater marketing value) over the five years. Nutritional composition did not differ between treatments. These results support establishing suitable irrigation strategies for pistachio cv. Kerman in central Spain and similar climates. View this paper
