Cover Story: Silver(I) coordination compounds are promising antibacterial agents, but their efficacy is often limited by poor solubility and bioavailability, both of which are strongly influenced by ligand choice. In this work, a group of six new Ag(I) complexes featuring a quinazolinone thioamide and different phosphine co-ligands were synthesized and evaluated for their antibacterial properties, revealing selective growth inhibition of S. aureus. To enhance their effectiveness, Ag(I) complexes were encapsulated into alginate-based hydrogels, which enabled antibacterial activity at significantly lower concentrations. Mechanistic studies suggest a redox-mediated bioactivity via reductase inhibition and subsequent disruption of bacterial redox homeostasis. View this paper
