Cover Story: Energy harvesting bears the potential to provide lifetime power supply to wireless sensors. In this work, we investigate a model of an electromagnetic energy harvester, which converts vibrational energy into electrical energy. Such a device is composed of four permanent magnets oscillating along a coil. The model is implemented in a finite element-based simulation software. A compact model is derived from parametrized solutions of this model and integrated into a system-level simulation. Furthermore, matrix interpolation-based and algebraic parameterization-based parametric model order reduction methods are suggested for reducing the computational effort for the generation of the compact model. These techniques are applied to the design optimization of the harvester with respect to magnet dimensions. View this paper
