Cover Story: The real-time estimation of ocean wave spectrum and elevation are essential for feed-forward DP (dynamic positioning) and route optimization. This manuscript uses the Kalman filter to estimate wave spectrum and elevation in real-time from the vessel's motion. If the ship is less responsive for high-frequency waves, amplified noise may occur and cause overestimation problems. Therefore, a new Kalman filter configuration by applying the principle of Wiener filter is proposed to suppress these overestimations. View this paper.
