Cover Story: Urban heat is shaped by both climate and the built environment, yet their effects are rarely disentangled clearly across cities. Using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), this study examines the summer surface heat across census tracts in eight U.S. cities with contrasting climates. By jointly modeling land surface temperature (LST) and surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) within one standardized cross-city framework, it distinguishes absolute surface heat from relative within-city heat anomaly. The results show that impervious surfaces and surface moisture most strongly shape SUHII, while latitude and mean summer air temperature structure LST. The study provides interpretable, generalizable evidence to guide more precise and equitable urban heat mitigation. View this paper
