Many politicians heavily leverage social media platforms to further their interests and professional goals. TikTok, the widely popular social network established in 2016, has amassed a vast user following, especially among the younger demographic known as Generation Z. This study conceptualizes it as part of a platformized political communication environment that enables direct-to-audience communication beyond traditional journalistic gatekeeping. The current study aims to analyze high-visibility TikTok content produced by active Israeli politicians by scrutinizing the best-performing videos created by politicians representing diverse political ideologies. High-visibility content refers to videos that generated relatively high engagement, exposure, and platform presence, and therefore had greater potential to influence or impact audiences compared with less visible posts. The goal is to characterize and understand the content patterns and visibility dynamics of these successful TikTok videos posted by politicians. The findings suggest that the popularity of TikTok videos posted by politicians is associated with gender, age, and political affiliation. Men, older individuals, and those with right-wing affiliations tend to create content that garners the highest levels of popularity. Moreover, a considerable proportion of the sampled high-visibility videos do not engage directly with political subject matters. This suggests that, among best-performing political TikTok posts, visibility and engagement may sometimes outweigh explicit political or ideological discourse. This implies that politicians feel compelled to participate on the platform, even when their most visible content does not specifically revolve around promoting political messages. Consequently, the findings lend cautious support to the view that platform logic shapes political visibility and communication practices, even in politicians’ use of TikTok. In doing so, this study contributes to understanding how commercial social media platforms such as TikTok shape political visibility, engagement, and direct-to-audience communication. Full article

This article studies the relationship between social dominance orientation, right-wing authoritarianism, spirituality, religiosity, and economic system justification in the general population of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in a sample of 843 participants (52% men and 48% women) aged 18 to 88 years (Mage = 46; SD = 15.78). The study contextualizes social psychological approaches to system justification through a review of sociological literature on domination, religion, and legitimacy. According to the results, system justification is positively associated with social dominance orientation (r = 0.40), right-wing authoritarianism (r = 0.56) and dimensions of religiosity, particularly extrinsic religious orientation (0.12 ≤ r ≤ 0.21). Regression analyses indicated that social dominance orientation, right-wing authoritarianism, and extrinsic religious orientation were the variables most strongly associated with economic system justification. Western theories and empirical comparative research on attitudes toward immigrants and their rights have largely overlooked Latin America. To address this gap, we conducted multilevel ordered logistic regression analyses on Latinobarómetro surveys from 17 countries (N = 19,004). The findings show that support for immigrants’ social rights is more contingent on immigration-related benefits—especially cultural enrichment—than on perceived threats. When threats do mobilize opposition, the perceived fiscal burden emerges as the sole significant driver, overriding both concerns about labor market competition and fears of rising crime. Furthermore, right-wing individuals were no less supportive of immigrants’ social rights than left-wing individuals. Instead, the most welfare-chauvinist attitudes were found among the politically disengaged. At the macrosocial level, the results provide evidence that contextual factors not only exert a direct statistical effect on public support for immigrants’ social rights but also moderate the influence of perceived micro-level threats. In particular, the national unemployment rate and the immigrant stock exacerbate the exclusionary effect of the perceived fiscal burden on levels of support among citizens. Ultimately, these findings challenge some theoretical assumptions derived from intergroup threat theory, provide novel evidence for the Threat-Benefit Model, and further suggest a distinct political dynamic in the region. The 2024 US presidential campaign was dubbed the ‘podcast election’, with Donald Trump’s appearances on shows targeting young male audiences hailed for securing victory with this demographic. However, limited attention has been paid to how the specific affordances of audio media are leveraged to engage voters with appeals to hegemonic masculinity. Drawing on the theoretical framework of counterpublics, this study applies an innovative close analytical listening method and critical discourse analysis to five long-form podcast interviews with Trump. It finds that intimacy, authenticity, and convivial, free-wheeling conversation were key elements of Trump’s political communication—reaching mass audiences while bypassing the scrutiny of professional journalism. Furthermore, these shows celebrated men’s superiority while largely excluding women from public discourse. These findings are important for understanding the implications of an increasingly masculine, right-wing podcast scene, which we theorize as the brosphere. Ultimately, we argue that the brosphere is distinct from—but related to—the overtly misogynistic manosphere. Full article

Insect aerial righting is a critical locomotor response to flight perturbations. However, the kinematic strategy of dragonfly (Pantala flavescens) free-fall recovery under asymmetric perturbations remains unclear. In this study, free-fall experiments were conducted using single-wing release to induce an initial asymmetric body roll, and three-dimensional kinematics were reconstructed using high-speed videography. The results show that the free-fall recovery process was divided into two phases based on body velocity: a free-fall phase with increasing downward velocity and a recovery phase marked by the cessation of this trend and a rise in horizontal velocity. During the free-fall phase, thorax roll developed and then attenuated, accompanied by relative abdominal and wing posture variations, without sustained wing flapping. Near the onset of recovery, hindwings initiated the downstroke earlier than forewings, forming a hindwing-leading flapping pattern. These findings indicate that dragonflies employ a phased kinematic strategy during asymmetric free-fall recovery, involving early body and wing posture adjustments followed by asymmetric wing flapping during the transition from gravity-dominated descent to maneuvering flight. Considerations of gender have long been overlooked in legal discourses and public debates on asylum. In more recent years, the right-wing narrative has taken a strategic U-turn, instead misappropriating gendered concerns including gender-based violence for the purposes of promoting racialised border controls on the grounds of cultural incompatibilities, and by painting refugees as a threat to British values, economy and security. This paper calls out the hypocrisy of such femonationalist framings for overlooking the ways in which Western institutions sustain refugee women’s ongoing vulnerabilities. Drawing from qualitative interviews and focus groups with refugee women survivors of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), this paper examines the continuities of harm in the lives of women who have fled gender-based persecution to Britain. The paper critically maps the way prolonged state control during the asylum process perpetuates a sense of violence as ongoing, and its damaging implications on survivors striving to navigate life after flight. In doing so, the findings contribute new insights into established scholarship on asylum harms by illuminating the gendered consequences of violence of waiting, and refugee women’s subtle individual and collective strategies to struggle against violent continuums. This study examines the political discourse and practices of the Greek Cypriot political party ELAM and the Turkish Cypriot political party YDP within the framework of populism. The findings of the study demonstrate that ELAM frames the Greek Cypriot community as part of “Judeo-Christian civilization” and portrays this civilization as being under threat from “Islamic civilization,” including Türkiye, Turkish Cypriots, and “illegal immigrants.” YDP, in turn, conceptualizes the Turkish Cypriot community as part of “Islamic civilization” and claims that “the West”—comprising actors such as Greek Cypriots, Greece, Israel, the EU, and the USA—is waging a comprehensive campaign against “Islamic civilization.” ELAM accuses the Greek Cypriot left of acting against the interests of “Western civilization” and Hellenic Orthodox values, while YDP similarly charges the Turkish Cypriot left with acting contrary to the interests and values of the Turkish-Islamic world. Moreover, while ELAM opposes Turkish Cypriots and “illegal immigrants” benefiting from the resources of the Republic of Cyprus, the right-wing government in which YDP is a coalition partner is frequently criticized for having contributed to the deterioration of the living standards of foreign workers. ELAM adopts a sharply oppositional stance toward the expansion of LGBTIQ+ rights, whereas YDP prefers not to foreground this issue. The study concludes that the discourses of both parties largely correspond to the concept of “civilizational populism.” Full article

Frequent rockbursts in staggered roadways beneath residual coal pillars pose a critical challenge for the slice mining of ultra-thick coal seams. Taking the LW250101-2 of Huating Coal Mine as a case study, this paper systematically reveals the stress evolution laws and rockburst mechanism induced by irregular residual pillars by integrating microseismic (MS) monitoring, moment tensor inversion, and numerical simulation. First, source mechanism inversion analysis elucidated that compressive-shear failure of coal pillars was the dominant rupture mode in five of the eight recorded rockburst events. Second, numerical simulations demonstrate that the width of the left wing and the thickness of the right wing of the “L-shaped” coal pillar structure are the key geometric factors controlling rockburst risk; larger dimensions correlate with more intense stress concentration and higher-energy MS events. Moreover, the stress deflection effect of “L-shaped” coal pillars causes the haulage gateway of the LW250101-2 to remain in a state of stress accumulation, increasing its susceptibility to rockburst. Finally, a synergistic prevention system consisting of deep-hole roof blasting, large-charge coal blasting, and ultra-deep large-diameter boreholes was implemented. Field monitoring confirms that these measures dissipated high-stress concentrations, reduced rockburst frequency to zero and ensured safe mining. Full article

Patriarchal attitudes persistently constrain women’s employment outcomes in Turkey. This study investigates individual-level determinants of preferences for employment patriarchy using the World Values Survey (WVS) Wave 7 data for the Turkish case. An ordered probit model is utilized to quantify associations of sociodemographic characteristics, religiosity, political views, and other patriarchal attitudes with preferences for employment patriarchy in Turkey. Findings reveal that higher religiosity, right-wing views, and other patriarchal attitudes (educational, managerial, and household) are positively associated with preferences for employment patriarchy in Turkey. Females are less likely to have preferences for employment patriarchy. The results imply that there are multidimensional pathways leading to preferences for employment patriarchy. Hence, policies to improve female labor market outcomes should develop multidimensional mechanisms to mitigate the impacts of religious, political and normative factors by moving beyond one-size-fits-all approaches. In his 17 novels, Kjartan Fløgstad (born 1944) has analysed the traces of WWII and possible continuations of right-wing ideology into post-war politics and ideology. In my article, I focus on four novels: Dalen Portland, U3, Grense Jakobselv, and Due og drone (Dove and Drone). Dalen Portland and U3 were published in the context of the Cold War, whereas Grense Jakobselv and Due og drone were published in a context in which history was claimed to have reached its end after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Fløgstad has opposed the end-of-history thesis since it was introduced in the influential study by Francis Fukuyama in 1992. From Fløgstad’s perspective, history has reached a dead end, as democratic ideals are being challenged and economic disparities are widening—even within the welfare states of Northern Europe. In all the novels being discussed, Fløgstad has consistently focused on factual and possible interlinks between right-wing figures of thought and stakeholders of political and economic power. Thus, the only consistent superpower, the United States, has also been an object of Fløgstad’s interest. The importance of the United States is even indicated in the well-chosen title for the English translation of Dalen Portland: Dollar Road. The interpretation of Fløgstad’s novels is simultaneously an interpretation of history. Given the threats to democratic ideals that have emerged in the 2020s, Fløgstad’s analysis has demonstrated notable foresight. Full article

Background and Clinical Significance: Giant sphenoid wing meningiomas are generally viewed as skull base masses that compress frontal centers and their respective pathways gradually enough to cause a dysexecutive–apathetic syndrome, which can mimic primary neurodegenerative disease. The aim of this report is to illustrate how bedside phenotyping and multimodal imaging can disclose similar clinical presentations as surgically treatable network lesions. Case Presentation: An independent, right-handed older female developed an incremental, two-year decline of her ability to perform executive functions, extreme apathy, lack of instrumental functioning, and a frontal-based gait disturbance, culminating in a first generalized seizure and a newly acquired left-sided upper extremity pyramidal sign. Standardized neuropsychological evaluation revealed a predominant frontal-based dysexecutive profile with intact core language skills, similar to behavioral-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). MRI demonstrated a large, right fronto-temporo-basal extra-axial tumor attached to the sphenoid wing with homogeneous postcontrast enhancement, significant vasogenic edema within the frontal projection pathways, and a marked midline displacement of structures with an open venous pathway. With the use of a skull-base flattening pterional craniotomy with early devascularization followed by staged internal debulking, arachnoid preserving dissection, and conservative venous preservation, the surgeon accomplished a Simpson Grade I resection. Sequential improvements in the patient’s frontal “re-awakening” were demonstrated through postoperative improvements on standardized stroke, cognitive and functional assessment scales that correlated well with persistent decompression and symmetric ventricles on follow-up images. Conclusions: This case illustrates the possibility of a non-dominant sphenoid wing meningioma resulting in a pseudo-degenerative frontal syndrome and its potential for reversal if recognized as a network lesion and treated with tailored, venous-sparing skull-base surgery. Contrast-enhanced imaging and routine frontal testing in atypical “dementia” presentations may aid in identifying additional patients with potentially surgically remediable cases. Full article

The catalytic mechanism of the Zn(II)-dependent chlorothalonil dehalogenase from Pseudomonas sp. CTN-3 (Chd) was examined using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, Bayesian network analysis, and Markov state model analysis to quantify its motions. Chd selectively substitutes an aromatic chlorine-carbon bond in chlorothalonil (TPN; 2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophtalonitrile) with an aromatic alcohol (4-hydroxytrichloro-isophthalonitrile; 4-OH-TPN). It is a homodimer with two solvent-accessible channels in each monomer, which are proposed to provide different routes for substrate and products to access/leave the catalytic Zn(II) site. Based on MD simulations, Chd exhibits allosteric behavior wherein a “Y”-shaped substrate channel exhibits a “flip flop” mechanism, where the “right” substrate channel opens to allow TPN to enter, after which it closes, followed by the “left” channel opening. The “right” channel then reopens, likely to allow the product, 4-OH-TPN, to leave the active site, but this reopening of the right channel drives the “left” channel to close. Coupled with the substrate channels alternately opening and closing, a corresponding possible Cl channel opens and closes. Although the dynamics of this process are fast, Chd needs to overcome a 5 kT free-energy barrier for this transition and to relax after opening. Additionally, exposed “wing” residues, hydrophilic residues at the ends of protruding α-helices, act as allosteric indicators, signaling the complex allosteric motions required to open the substrate channel. We propose, for the first time, a dynamic mechanism that drives substrate binding and product release, providing new insight into Chd’s catalytic mechanism. Full article

Currently, the synonymy of the two morphologically analogous copepod species, Mongolodiaptomus birulai (Rylov, 1922) and M. formosanus Kiefer, 1937, remains doubtful. While examining the detailed morphology of diaptomid copepods from China, Cambodia, and Vietnam, we came across two undescribed species whose morphology is closely similar to that of M. birulai from Northeast China and M. formosanus from Taiwan. In this paper, descriptions of M. parabirulai sp. nov. from Yunnan, Southwestern China, and M. longiserratus sp. nov. from Cambodia and Vietnam are presented. The first new species, M. parabirulai sp. nov., can be distinguished from its congeners in the male P5 by it having the distal outer portion of the second right exopod produce a wing-shaped expansion and its strongly robust left and right basis. The second new species, M. longiserratus sp. nov., can be differentiated by the following characteristics in the male: the spiniform process on segment 20 of the right antennule is longer than that of segment 21 and has a serrate outer margin, and the right P5 basis has two (longitudinal and semicircular) hyaline lamellae. Furthermore, the status of M. birulai and M. formosanus is reviewed and recommended. Full article

This study analyzes the political speeches of Brazilian federal representatives from the Liberal Party (PL), the primary platform for Bolsonarism, to identify patterns and features of conspiracy theories. Two core concepts are used: conspiracy theories as a worldview that addresses unpredictability and complexity of life in contemporary society, and Bolsonarism as a fundamentally conspiracist worldview grounded in reactionary authoritarianism and populism. Analyzing speeches delivered between 2019 and 2024, our inductive methodology identified both epistemological (logic) and narrative (rhetoric) elements. These individual elements organically integrated to form a pervasive, overarching conspiracy theory that we term “The Grand Collusion”. This theory was strategically deployed to support electoral campaigns and structure political opposition to the Lula government. “The Grand Collusion” alleges a vast alliance between the top echelons of the Judiciary (led by STF Minister Alexandre de Moraes) and the Brazilian Left (led by Lula), with assistance from major media and multilateral organizations. Its alleged objectives include rigging the 2022 elections and orchestrating the systematic persecution and censorship of Right-wing politicians and conservative citizens. Full article

Since the 1990s, but especially in the early 21st century, a new family of right-wing populist parties has become a stable feature of Western European party systems. These parties, linked by several studies to new cleavages related to globalization processes and values changes which have happened since the late 20th century, are also marked by a new use of religion. In their worldview, this latter is indeed mainly an identity and civilization marker, related to the belonging, rather than believing or behaving, dimension. As a consequence, while they promote Christian symbols in the public sphere and are actively engaged in debates related to morality politics and multicultural society, they also contribute to processes of banalization and culturalization of faith, and to the delegitimization of religious leaders and institutions. For this reason, the scholarly community is divided about their role as promoters of religion, or, rather, as (maybe unintentional) agents of secularization. This article will try to contribute to this discussion by analyzing the Italian case. Italy is indeed an interesting laboratory for the study of right-wing populism, with the development over the past few decades of two state-wide parties belonging to the right-wing populist family, the League and Brothers of Italy, both currently part of the Meloni cabinet. The article will analyze the historical roots of the parties and their developments, their manifestos, their policy proposals, and their relations with religious institutions and symbols to reflect on the two parties’ uses of religion for political aims, and their meaning in relation to the above-mentioned theoretical debates.
