Cover Story: This study investigates defect formation in abrasive waterjet machining (AWJM) of UNS A92024 aluminum using an innovative approach that combines factorial design and advanced image analysis. A novel geometric variable based on defect area is proposed to accurately quantify the jet lag phenomenon. The results demonstrate that traverse speed and water pressure are the dominant factors and act in a coupled manner, while abrasive mass flow rate plays a secondary role. Optimal conditions that significantly enhance process stability and final cut quality are identified, providing clear guidelines for improving control and performance in AWJM applications. View this paper
