Cover Story: As the demand for high-reliability electric drives grows, fault-tolerant control strategies for multi-phase machines have become increasingly essential. This paper explores fault tolerance in a six-phase PMSM powered by a five-level cascaded H-bridge converter using level-shift PWM (LSPWM). A precise fault detection mechanism ensures the accurate identification of faults in both machine phases and inverter legs. To enhance reliability, the system dynamically reconfigures faulty inverter phase legs into a two-level topology, reducing losses and preserving healthy switches. Additionally, a modified VSD control method mitigates the effects of short-circuit faults, ensuring system stability. Validated through Simulink simulations and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests, this approach demonstrates strong potential for high-reliability applications. View this paper
