2020 April - 289 articles

Cover Story: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is still the leading cause of cancer-related mortality and the development of efficient therapies for HCC remains a great challenge. In recent years, the emergence of cancer immunotherapies has given new hope for the treatment of HCC. In this paper, we provide an update on recent advances in immunotherapies for HCC. First, we discuss the unique immunosuppressive microenvironment of the liver and the immune evasion mechanisms of HCC and then we review the current immunotherapeutic approaches for HCC, which include immune checkpoint inhibiter (ICI)-based therapies and non-ICI therapies, such as cancer vaccines, oncolytic virotherapy, and cell-based immunotherapy.
