Cover Story: Lithium titanate oxide (LTO) cells are a promising solution for electric vehicles due to their fast-charging capability and thermal stability, but thermal runaway during abuse conditions like overcharging remains a critical safety concern. This study examines the thermal runaway mitigation performance of dielectric fluids under overcharge abuse conditions in lithium-ion cells with lithium titanate oxide anodes. Fully charged 10 Ah cells were tested at 40A (4C) under air exposure and submerged in different dielectric fluids, including fluorinated fluids, synthetic ester, and silicone oil. The results show that certain fluids can effectively delay thermal runaway and enhance fire prevention. These findings offer significant insights into improving battery safety in electric vehicle applications and other energy storage systems. View this paper
