This narrative literature review examines African American family fishing as a historically grounded practice of food provision, cultural continuity, place-based learning, and environmental stewardship, and considers its conceptual relationship to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The review synthesizes an analytical corpus of 41 works spanning history, fishing participation, food insecurity, food sovereignty, foodways, place attachment, environmental education, and social-ecological systems. The literature indicates that Black fishing cannot be understood as recreation alone; historically and contemporarily, it has connected food acquisition, family interaction, livelihood, cultural memory, and community identity. These functions are conceptually aligned with SDGs 2, 3, and 10 through plausible pathways involving culturally meaningful food access, family-centered outdoor activity, and attention to racial disparities in food security, environmental access, and institutional representation. Family fishing may also provide a place-based learning context relevant to SDG 4, while responsible harvesting, reduced waste, and ecological literacy may contribute to SDG 12. Repeated engagement with local waters may cultivate belonging and stewardship; freshwater relationships are most directly relevant to SDG 6, whereas coastal, estuarine, and marine contexts may contribute to SDG 14. These are interpretive alignments, not measured SDG outcomes. The review concludes that family-centered pilot initiatives may productively integrate cultural history, ecological education, food skills, mentorship, and community leadership, subject to feasibility testing and empirical evaluation. Contemporary family-level research is needed to examine harvest, food sharing, learning, health, access, and stewardship across generations. Full article

The sustainable restoration of tropical dry forest (TDF)—one of the planet’s most threatened ecosystems—is constrained by low community integration and limited cultural relevance, particularly in Afro-descendant territories, where the erosion of oral tradition and forest degradation reinforce one another. This study proposes a quantitative framework to systematize the biocultural memory embedded in oral tradition as an input for socially grounded, sustainable TDF restoration. A corpus of 401 works from the Afro-descendant community of the Patía Valley (Cauca, Colombia) was coded in a multidimensional database of 10 categories, and three indices were computed: the Biocultural Density Index (IDBC), the Biocultural Vulnerability Index (IVB), and an adaptation of Winter’s flora framework (IVBw), in a total version and a version restricted to wild/native species. The framework identifies the works of greatest biocultural density (IDBC max. = 84) and separates cultivated/introduced species of high cultural value (Limón, Yuca, Caña de azúcar), ones relevant to food sovereignty, and from wild/native species (e.g., Caña brava, Cañafístula, Guayacán, Ceiba) that constitute the restorable core. Cultural practices are the hubs of the system, traditional medicine is the most at risk of loss, and food security concentrates 43% of the flora records. These replicable tools link Afro-descendant knowledge to measurable, monitorable restoration priorities, advancing sustainable land management, biodiversity conservation and cultural sustainability. Sustainable food system transformation is inseparable from planetary health, the interdependent wellbeing of human populations and the ecological systems that sustain them. Agroecology and regenerative agriculture are frequently portrayed as competing paradigms for sustainable food system transformation. This commentary challenges this framing as both analytically unwarranted and practically counterproductive. Grounded in Ethiopia’s smallholder agricultural context and informed by recent empirical evidence, we argue that these two approaches are complementary and mutually reinforcing. Agroecology emerged from an equity-centered, participatory, and politically engaged framework for transforming food systems, while regenerative agriculture contributes farm-level ecological restoration tools and measurable biophysical outcomes related to planetary health. Neither is sufficient alone: regenerative practices without agroecology’s social architecture risk reinforcing existing inequities; agroecology without a systematic effort to ensure a widespread increase in production for food security and a net positive regeneration of environmental health cannot fully deliver its transformative potential, particularly in contexts where productivity, livelihoods, and ecosystem restoration must be achieved Ethiopia’s concurrent validation of a National Agroecology Strategy (2026–2040) and advancement of a National Regenerative Agriculture Strategy (2026–2036) reflects a growing national recognition that these paradigms are essential partners, not rivals. An integrated framework embedding regenerative practices within agroecological principles offers the most scientifically grounded and contextually appropriate pathway for Ethiopia’s resilient, equitable, and productive agricultural transformation. Reframed in these terms, agroecology–regenerative integration is not simply a technical or sectoral fix but a direct contribution to planetary health, safeguarding the ecological systems, food security, and social equity on which human wellbeing ultimately depends. Globally, school meals have formed a social safety net for improving children’s nutrition, health, and educational attainment. In Aotearoa New Zealand, government funded lunches for children attending schools in low-income neighbourhoods were introduced in 2020, amidst rising poverty levels and consequent household food insecurity. The aspirations encapsulated within the scheme’s indigenous Māori name, ‘Ka Ora, Ka Ako’ (‘to be well, healthy and safe; to be ready to learn’) have lost focus since reforms to the lunches in 2024 prioritised cost savings, resulting in widely publicised quality issues. This present study draws from a critical multi-level investigation into the issue of hungry children in New Zealand schools, prior to the introduction of ‘Ka Ora, Ka Ako’. Narrative analysis identified how food in schools has been conceptualised within the context of a settler colonial charity model and neoliberal austerity. Applying a critical community psychology lens highlights how burnt and meagre lunches offered to children from food insecure households are a concrete product of historically grounded, unequal relations between groups. A community psychology approach reimagines state-funded food in schools as a public good, arguing for equitable rights to nutrition, including recognition of Māori rights to food sovereignty. Contemporary food systems are increasingly shaped by financialization, corporate concentration, and unequal distributions of power that influence food production, food environments, dietary exposures, and population health. However, the relationships among food-system financialization, food sovereignty, and oral health remain insufficiently integrated within food-security, sustainability, and One Health research. This structured narrative review critically synthesized interdisciplinary evidence from Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, citation searching, and authoritative institutional sources to examine these relationships and develop an integrative conceptual framework. The synthesis indicates that financialization may influence health through market concentration, commodity dependence, corporate control of food environments, and the expansion of ultra-processed foods, whereas food sovereignty may modify these pathways by strengthening agency, equitable resource distribution, local governance, and ecological resilience. Dietary exposures and related biological mechanisms provide plausible pathways through which these structural processes may contribute to oral-health outcomes and inequalities. The proposed framework integrates food-system structures, governance, food environments, dietary exposures, biological pathways, oral health, and One Health implications within a common analytical model. Oral health is therefore proposed as a potential biological interface through which food-system transformations and inequalities may become measurable. Empirical research is required to test these pathways and evaluate the framework’s applicability across populations and food-system contexts. Full article

This study analyzes how the integration of native maize cultivation, cultural identity, and technological innovation can promote sustainable and experiential tourism in rural Mexico. The research was conducted in the community of Llano de Guadalupe, Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca. The participatory Action Research process progressed through institutional coordination, participatory diagnosis, biofertilization training, monitoring activities, and community dissemination phases conducted between 3 March 2025 to 25 May 2026. The methodological process included institutional coordination, participatory diagnosis, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, field observations, and the implementation of agroecological practices based on biofertilization. An AI-assisted illustrated field notebook was co-designed to support intercultural education, knowledge exchange, and community participation. The study also incorporated collaborative storytelling, seed preservation practices, and the co-design of sustainable tourism routes grounded in local gastronomy, biodiversity, and agricultural traditions. Preliminary impact indicators showed the expansion of participation from two pilot producers to 54 local producers after community dissemination activities. Findings indicate that the integration of traditional ecological knowledge with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can strengthen community empowerment, intergenerational learning, and sustainable livelihoods while preserving biocultural heritage. The proposed circular framework connects ecological, social, cultural, and economic subsystems by transforming agroecological practices into educational and tourism assets. The results suggest that Indigenous and rural communities can lead sustainable destination development when supported through participatory governance, inclusive education, and context-sensitive technological innovation. The Tlaxiaco case offers a transferable framework for sustainable rural development that contributes to food sovereignty, biodiversity conservation, environmental stewardship, and local economic resilience. In 2019, the United Nations’ General Assembly established 2021 to 2030 as the Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, and ecological restoration should be adopted by the member nations. In 2015, Brazil had already committed to restoring (replanting) twelve million hectares of forests, and this commitment was reaffirmed in the National Plan for the Recovery of Native Vegetation in 2017 and relaunched at COP16 on diversity in 2024. Despite Brazil’s leadership in establishing the Tropical Forests Forever Fund (TFFF) in 2023, which was launched at COP30 in Belem in 2025, the expansion of the agricultural frontier remains the main driver of deforestation in the Amazon/Rain Forest and the Cerrado biomes. This article aims to examine the social and ecological consequences of the capitalist occupation and expansion of the agricultural frontier in the Cerrado. It will also study the counterpoint of the land struggles and initiatives of peasant organizations focused on conservation and restoration as possibilities and perspectives for the social and ecological restoration of the Cerrado landscapes. Based on an interdisciplinary approach, the specialized literature, and official agricultural data, the study shows that, in addition to degrading nature (deforestation, water and soil contamination, and desertification) and threatening the historical ways of life of countryside peoples, the frontier’s expansion blocks possibilities for restoration and hinders initiatives to protect the remaining nature of Brazil’s second-largest biome. On the other hand, resistance to expropriation and appropriation, and struggles for land and territory, have emerged as possibilities for socio-environmental restoration, beyond reforestation and the recovery of destroyed nature, by transforming landscapes, ways of life, and production, and by creating conditions for food sovereignty and sustainability in the countryside. Therefore, agroecological actions by agrarian movements and rural organizations in general, and those of the Movement of Landless Rural Workers (MST) in particular, have become emblematic in opposing agrarian extractivism and unsustainable monocrops imposed upon and disseminated throughout the Brazilian Cerrado. Grain storage is vital for a country within a framework of food sovereignty and security. It helps stabilize markets, prices, and imbalances between supply and demand. In Mexico, public storage infrastructure is almost nonexistent, having been transferred to the private sector. The objective of this article is to analyze the relationship between public storage infrastructure and distribution problems that maize producers face in Mexico. A mixed-methods analysis procedure was implemented. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with small, medium, and large distributors, selected using the snowball sampling technique. The analysis identifies a positive association between references to storage infrastructure and distribution problems in the interview materials. Additionally, Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was applied to the counts to strengthen the analysis. The results indicated a positive and significant relationship between the variables “storage infrastructure” and “distribution problems”, but also that, around the latter, there are others: lack of government support, price fixing, guaranteed price, insecurity, production costs, and inconveniences that require attention to stabilize the maize market. Inadequate infrastructure limits storage capacity, affects grain quality, increases costs, reduces producers’ bargaining power, and contributes to price volatility. It also impacts logistics, transportation, and marketing, especially in less developed regions. Evidence suggests that public storage infrastructure is a strategic element for food security; however, its concentration and predominantly private nature generate territorial inequalities. Over the past fifty years, urban and rural spaces have been reshaped by global sustainability policies, digital innovation, and emerging socio-ecological needs. This article investigates the convergence of agro-urban planning strategies, Smart City infrastructures, and adaptive governance models, proposing an integrated agro-urban paradigm for sustainable territorial transformation. Drawing on a literature review and comparative analysis of international case studies—including Toronto, Milan, and Woven City—the research develops a triadic interpretative framework based on worldview, program, and faith. The study identifies AgroCities as systems centered on food sovereignty and ecological resilience, Smart Cities as efficiency-driven digital ecosystems, and Adaptive Cities as flexible, human-centered responses to complexity. Findings suggest that integrating food systems, technological innovation, and participatory governance enhances urban resilience and sustainability across scales. The article concludes by advocating for multi-scalar planning tools, cross-sectoral policies, and civic engagement to support the transition toward inclusive and regenerative cities. This framework offers a theoretical and operational contribution to reimagining urban planning in line with the principles of Smart Land and adaptive urbanism. Full article

(1) Background. Food sovereignty and local sustainability are ensured by large agro-industrial holdings and small-scale farms; this synergy forms a complementary model of the agrifood system. Maintaining this model’s balance requires the creation of a unified digital ecosystem that integrates all suppliers and consumers into production chains, thereby eliminating unnecessary intermediaries. (2) Methods. This study employs a comprehensive methodological framework, including systems analysis and mathematical modeling, to develop service algorithms. Object-oriented design and software engineering methods facilitated the development and implementation of a service-oriented architecture for the digital system. (3) Results. The study presents a multi-tier architecture featuring an integration bus based on a service-oriented approach. To implement direct supply-and-demand coupling strategies, the system integrates both internal services (microeconomic indicators) and external services (macroeconomic indicators). Additionally, a recommender system based on neural networks and mathematical models was developed to personalize consumer requests and manage product sales. (4) Conclusions. The software solution is consistent with the AgTech 4.0 concept and enables the creation of a seamless environment for interstate trade. The implementation of the system enhances the transparency of the “product footprint”, facilitates the redistribution of surpluses, and, consequently, contributes to price stabilization. Full article

Efficient management of soil–water resources is critical for global food security under intensifying climatic and demographic pressures. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of artificial intelligence (AI) and distributed deep learning methodologies applied to soil–water interactions in precision agriculture. The physical and hydraulic foundations of soil–water systems—including water retention, unsaturated flow governed by the Richards equation, and soil degradation processes—are examined and situated within a unified framework of AI-based modeling and decision support. Classical machine learning (ML) algorithms (Random Forests, Support Vector Machines, gradient boosting) and deep learning architectures (convolutional neural networks, long short-term memory networks, transformers) are evaluated with respect to their capacity to predict soil moisture dynamics, estimate hydraulic properties, support smart irrigation scheduling, and generate digital soil maps at field-to-regional scales. Distributed training paradigms, federated learning for privacy-preserving multi-farm analytics, and edge AI deployment on low-power IoT hardware are assessed as enabling infrastructures for scalable agricultural intelligence. This review further addresses explainability, uncertainty quantification, and ethical dimensions inherent to AI-driven agricultural systems. Key challenges—including training data scarcity in data-poor regions, model interpretability, integration with physics-based hydrological models, and real-time deployment constraints—are critically discussed. Prospective research directions encompass physics-informed neural networks, foundation models for earth observation, autonomous digital twins of soil–water systems, and federated learning architectures aligned with data sovereignty frameworks. The synthesis underscores AI’s transformative potential for sustainable agricultural water management while delineating the technical and sociotechnical barriers that must be resolved to realize this potential at a global scale. International agri-food trade and climate change interact in ways that have significant implications for supply chain resilience and food sovereignty, yet these interactions remain insufficiently understood at the level of specific traded commodities. This paper analyses European fresh orange imports over 2012–2022 using a unit value decomposition applied to FAOSTAT and Eurostat bilateral trade data, alongside a seasonal supply analysis of monthly import flows from the main exporting regions. The analysis documents a pronounced geographic reorientation of global orange production toward developing and emerging economies in North Africa, Southern Africa, and South America, many of which face documented climate-related stressors. The unit value decomposition identifies how exporter-level unit values and import share reallocations contribute to changes in regional import unit value indices. The seasonal supply analysis shows that the European orange supply depends on a tight sequence of regional exporters operating in largely non-overlapping seasonal windows, leaving limited redundancy if disruptions occur in any single supplying region. These findings provide a descriptive, origin-disaggregated account of Europe’s trade-side exposure in fresh orange supply chains. They underscore the need for product-specific monitoring tools and policy approaches that consider seasonal import dependence, supplier concentration, and the climate vulnerability of major origin regions, while recognising that the present analysis does not estimate causal climate effects. The commercialization of Km 0 products has emerged as a strategic approach to strengthening rural economies, promoting sustainability, and countering depopulation in European territories. This study examines the motivations and perceptions of three key stakeholder groups—farmers, restaurant businesses, and public officials—regarding rural permanence and the role of Km 0 commercialization. Based on original survey data collected in Spain (2024), the research adopts a comparative perspective to identify convergences and divergences across these actors. Results show that farmers perceive Km 0 as vital for the survival of family farms and the preservation of territorial identity, while restaurants view it as a competitive advantage to ensure freshness and authenticity in gastronomy. Public officials frame Km 0 as a governance tool for rural revitalization and demographic stabilization. Despite these different orientations, all groups converge on valuing quality of life, contact with nature, and sustainability. Structural constraints such as inadequate infrastructure, limited digital connectivity, and generational renewal remain significant barriers across contexts. Situating these findings within the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the agroecological transition framework, this article suggests that Km 0 commercialization holds potential as an instrument for sustainability, territorial resilience, and food sovereignty in contemporary rural Europe, while acknowledging that the exploratory nature of this study calls for caution in extrapolating these findings beyond the specific contexts examined. Governance of Agricultural Data Spaces in the European Union: Legal and Policy Implications for the Agri-Food Sector in Spain

The rapid digitalisation of the agri-food sector has generated unprecedented volumes of farm and value chain data, but also highly fragmented data ecosystems and asymmetric power relations between farmers, technology providers, and public authorities. In response, the European Union has developed a comprehensive data governance architecture—including the Data Governance Act, the Data Act, the GDPR and the EU Code of Conduct on Agricultural Data Sharing—and is building a Common European Agricultural Data Space (CEADS). This article examines that governance framework and explores its implications for the agri-food sector in Spain. Through a qualitative legal policy review, we map the regulatory landscape, analyse five major European and Spanish initiatives (CEADS/AgriDataSpace, AgData, Agdatahub, RegenAg-X, and DADS), and use Spain as a national case study. A multi-level actor model (meta-governance, data originators, transformation intermediaries, and data users) structures the comparative analysis. On this basis, six design principles for responsible agri-food data spaces are identified: clarity of use cases, inclusive multi-stakeholder governance, data life cycle mapping, privacy and sovereignty by design, a fair economic model, and regulatory compliance as a trust factor. The article identifies open research questions on anonymisation of georeferenced data, data sovereignty, and equitable value distribution, and outlines an agenda for future empirical and legal research. The digital transformation of agriculture has generated vast heterogeneous datasets from sensors, machinery, and administrative systems; however, interoperability and data sovereignty remain critical challenges. This study presents an IDS-compliant Agricultural Data Space tailored to the Italian context, integrating regulatory frameworks (General Data Protection Regulation, Data Governance Act and Data Act) with the International Data Spaces (IDS) Reference Architecture Model. The study addresses key barriers to data sharing, including technical fragmentation, governance gaps, and economic incentives, by mapping Italian agricultural data flows onto the five-layer IDS model. Policy-based usage control is implemented through machine-enforceable Open Digital Rights Language policies, enabling farmer-centric data sovereignty. Three use cases, namely administrative Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) declarations, machine-generated data portability, and agri-food supply-chain traceability, demonstrate how structured and interoperable data exchange can reduce redundancy, mitigate vendor lock-in, and support sustainable agri-food systems. The findings highlight the feasibility of IDS-driven solutions in real-world agricultural ecosystems, emphasizing the need for sector-specific policy templates and scalable governance mechanisms. This work contributes to the development of the Common European Agricultural Data Space by bridging institutional, technical, and regulatory gaps. Full article
