Cover Story: Efficient monitoring of road conditions is essential for sustainable infrastructure management, yet traditional surveys are labor-intensive and subjective. This study presents an automated workflow for assessing visual road surface conditions using high-resolution 3D street-level imagery from mobile mapping systems. The method combines depth-based preprocessing for isolating the road surface with a convolutional neural network that predicts the Road Condition Index directly. An aggregation strategy using outlier filtering and change-point detection converts frame-level pre-dictions into reliable road-segment assessments. Results show strong consistency with expert evaluations and highlight the potential of AI-driven analysis of street-level imagery to support scalable, objective, and cost-effective road infrastructure assessment. View this paper
