Cover Story: The application of organic wastes as fertilisers is important for sustainable agriculture, provided that resulting changes in microbial communities do not disrupt nutrient cycling or soil fertility. Our study used PacBio 16S rRNA sequencing to characterise the microbiota in sandy-clay loam soil, bovine, ovine and pig slurry, poultry waste and anaerobically digested wastewater treatment sludge. We also monitored the soil microbiota when these organic wastes were applied to grassland for 10 weeks. Depending on organic waste type, it took up to 6 weeks for the soil to return to its pre-application microbiota, which could adversely affect nutrient cycling and soil fertility. View this paper
