Cover Story: Electric vehicles (EVs) are recognized as a key strategy for reducing transport-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are a major contributor to global warming and climate change. This study examined the key variables that might have influenced EV purchase decisions among current EV owners and how they are different for prospective EV owners in North Carolina. By adopting a web-based survey for data collection, the study identified economic, demographic, environmental, and commuting behaviors, along with existing government policies and incentives that might motivate future EV adoption. The study concludes that expanding EV-friendly policies, incentives, and infrastructure will encourage first-time EV ownership while providing insights on the dynamics of early EV ownership.
