Cover Story: We perform the coherent, delocalized addition of a single photon to multiple, distinct light modes populated by different combinations of multiphoton quantum states. We experimentally demonstrate that such a simple operation may give rise to a wealth of interesting effects, ranging from the generation of a tunable degree of entanglement to the birth of peculiar correlations, both in the number of photons and in the field quadratures, among the resulting multimode light states. Besides their fundamental interest, these investigations open new avenues for applications to technologies involving quantum-enhanced sensing and quantum information processing and communication.
